    ABC Wide World of Sports
As a build-up for their rematch, Howard Cosell sits down with Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier to review their first fight from 1971. Tension builds and eventually erupts.
The day after the studio brawl the New York State Athletic Commission fined both Ali and Frazier $5,000 a piece.
Two day later Ali would avenge his first career loss as he won the rematch with a 12-round unanimous decision over Frazier.

Most people don't realize this, but this was the very first live "Real-TV" event in television history. I was thirteen years old and I watched this with my two older brothers and my father. I saw it as a small child too, but just about everyone, including Cosell, thought at first that it was a put on to hype the upcoming bout. But then you could see, as Cosell remarked, that Joe was indeed serious and really angry. I suppose that Joe had some insecurities about his lack of education, and when Ali called him "ignorant," he pressed the wrong button. However, it was daft on Joe's part to bring up the issue of hospitalization.

I disagree that they hated each other. Ali certainly didn't hate Frazier, and Joe deep down didn't hate Ali as much as he claimed. There's footage of him getting emotional when he talks about Ali's struggles with Parkinsons. It was just that Joe, by his own admission, was sensitive . He just took Ali's pre-fight banter too personally.

I really hate to say it, but his influence on his generation and the one directly under him, was immense, and in my opinion, vastly negative. He was the HERO of so many, and can you imagine what the world would be like if everyone were so arrogant, bigoted, so full of hate? Does the legacy of Jim Crow Laws explain and justify this kind of behavior? If so, when will we ever, ever be free? The 'devil' is the anger, the hatred itself, on all sides. Centuries from now, if the human race survives, we will look back on this with sad, incredulous irony- grown men being paid huge sums to injure each other physically , emotionally, and yes, mentally as well.
