Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier talk trash in 1971 press conference before 'Fight of the Century'

- Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier cause a ruckus at a press event leading up to the The Fight of the Century at Madison Square Garden, which took place on March 8, 1971. This was filmed on March 06, 1971 in New York. Among the reporters covering the event is ABC's Howard Cosell.
As someone who grew up during this era, the one thing I can tell you all...we took *none* of this for granted. We knew the magnitude of these events and would say to each other (as young adults) "We'll tell our grandchildren about this." i.e. It was not lost...
man that must have been awesome; ALI is a legend and so it Joe Frazier
Im jealous of u ....what was it like !!! Please tell me
Man, it must be Amazing to be in that Era.
@@angeloj3139 exactly. As they never had social media or the internet, these events would be the talk for years. All eyes were on this around the world

Boy, talk about a fight that actually lived up to the hype.
It lived beyond the hype.
Khabib vs Conor
@@kinglion6041 Khabib vs Mcgregor was good but not an all time great fight like this.
Trilogy that lived up
legend has it that the guy between them became permanently deaf after this
Lmao
With these kinds of trash talks by these two legends, wouldn't it make all the world wanted to see their "Fight of the century" match.
Never understood these two. Sometimes It looks they're friends, sometimes It seems they're the worst enemies ever. Anyway they're both true legends
Ali and Joe Frazier were never friends, they could have conversations, but it always come down to a competition or rivalry. When Ali was stripped of his title, Joe Frazier would give him money, Ali would jump the vehicle and turn on Joe Frazier, the promotion, Butch Lewis, would witness this same thing. Not to say Joe Frazier was not a good fighter, Ali and Frazier is a huge feud and rivalry. I will give it to Joe in the first fight for having great determination and stamina, even though he ended up in the hospital for a month after the "Fight of the Century". Muhammad Ali had a cracked jaw with a hour visit to the hospital. Ali/Frazier rivalry brought on, Leonard/ Hearns, Bowe/Holyfield, Pryor/Arguello, Gatti/Ward. The non stop action fights.....
@@paulcalhoun1762 Ali was great. But not honorable. The things he said about Frazier is unforgivable.
@@maxjackson4066 yeah right it was not good that he say bad things to frazier and i didnt know later ali apologied to frazier and they become freinds ...

Except where he called Frazier a gorilla and an Uncle Tom. That’s allot less classy than saying fuck or shit

At least on camera. In the ring, Ali used to be like I’m about to whoop your ass muthafucka”. He called Antonio Inoki a sissy faggot in the ring too lol

You really humbled the Louisville lip that night. Ali was "great" but Joe was my favourite heavyweight, a class man, not a mouthpiece like Ali, but in retrospect that's what made Ali so unique. RIP CHAMPS!!!
Well, he wasnt lying. 😅
Both are unforgettable boxers.. Rest in peace legends.
Frazier, totally underrated. Great legends also, Norton, Liston, Foreman Holmes
Ali was a Legend. Joe Frazier never got the credit he deserved

Best seat in the house haha
Ali was hilarious!!!!! “You’re gonna crawl across the ring and you gonna look up to me…” 😂Master trash talker who could back it up!
lol joe said the thing is you might not be alive to do that after the fight
Frazier gave him hell throughout the trilogy and was one of the few to knock him down!
Goated rivalry. The greatest and most iconic rivalry in sports.
Joe actually took him down with an iconic left hook, Ali underestimated joe because he never knew that while he was away from the ring due to banned Joe rised to the heavyweight rank as a top fighter but Ali later found out that in the ring
These meetings between Ali and Frazier, and other Ali opponents were pure class. None of the vulgarity, swearing etc of your tyson fury’s and other impersonators of todays heavyweights. Ali made the talking FUN. He created interest in the fights for young and old. Todays heavyweights dont come close in personality, ability nor class of this era. There will never be another Ali with everything he brought to the world. We are lucky to have lived in the same era he was alive. The Greatest, you are sadly missed by this world.

Rest in peace to both champs. Greatest rivalry in sports history if not the history of the world.
WWE could learn a lot from this work
They did
Ali taught us so many things. Despite they talking trash, its so clear that they don’t have any wrong intentions for each other. These days boxers start throwing punches in the pre match shoot itself, what a shame it is. Ali has been a legend and will always be.
It doesn't get no better than this pure classic r.i.p both of you guys are champions
Ali, “ 3-4000 people come to your fights, I get more than that at my training camp”! Classic!!!!!!!
Both backed up their talk, but Joe won the fight big time. They put on the best HW fight ever, and Joe was relentless. Ali was resilient. Joe held his own talking here as well. Joe was incredible

Hey " Clay " !!!
I love how he just casually talk shit when he's right next to him🤣🤣🤣
Bruce Lee was still alive at the time.
Bruce would break his fast hands on Frazier and then Bruce would be knocked out!!! without a doubt only poking the eyes or a groin kick or a well placed kick to the knees would have safed Bruce in a real fight Joe would knock out your Bruce Lee period!!!

That poor old man getting crotched between two of the toughest guys around at the time.😂 His expression is like,"This was not part of the dream." 😂😂
😅😂😮
Frazier kicked Ali's ass in the press conference and the fight!! Loving Joe's pinkie ring...
Then Ali beat him in the second fight and almost knock Joe out but the ref made a mistake and thought he heard the bell when Joe was jelly legs from a barrage of blows from Ali and the third fight Eddie Futch saved Joe from probably irreparable damage by stopping the fight after the 14th round so Ali avenged his lost two times!!!
Sorry no he didn't ali had a sharp tongue 😜
@@abduljaleelwilliamson679 lmao, he did not almost knock out Frazier! Frazier got pummeled against Foreman, went down over 6 times and still got up every time. It took the referee stepping in for Joe to stop. And Foreman is way more powerful than Ali! Also in the third fight, his health issues had caught up to him by then, kidney issues, liver problems, back issues, genetic high blood pressure, and blindness in one eye were all issues he dealt with from as early as his amateur fights. Frazier never actually had a full and healthy training camp. Also, Ali said in his biography that if Futch didn’t stop the fight he was going to quit. Some people say that he wouldn’t have and that it’s an exaggeration but it really isn’t. He was telling his corner to cut the gloves but his coach looked at Futch and Frazier arguing and he told Ali “no”. Futch ended up telling Frazier “Son, no one is gonna forget what ya did here tonight! Listen to me!” And Frazier put his head down and said “alright”. Frazier was wanting to go out there and kill him despite his good eye being swollen shut. If he wasn’t going to stop at then, then nothing would.
lol frazier was laying in the hospital for months after that fight
1:49
Ali: "You the champ?"
Frazier: "Right on."

Ali let that process real quick and than he clapped back immediately 😭 It was like he said….. “Ik he didn’t just say that to me” lmaaoo
Frazier's 'Did I stutter?' attitude and Ali's momentary disbelief at Frazier's statement is glorious lmao

Frazier had something to prove in this fight with Muhammad Ali, he needed to cement his championship status. This is why Frazier trained hard and got himself trim 206 lbs.
If he had done so with Foreman he would’ve been conditioned to weave away from Foreman’s punches and land those body blows he was infamous for. Foreman was capable of knocking him out off course but it would’ve been a different fight all together. By the time he faces Foreman in 73, Ali 74 & 75 & Foreman once more in 76 he allowed his desire and hunger to be champion to slip in his training. This is why I base my standard of Frazier from 68 to 71.
The guy sitting in the middle
There will never be another rivalry like this one
Them 2 were awesome
Joe Frazier was no match when it came to trash talking with Ali 🗣

Great showmen. Hilarious PG humour done right.
Frazier genuinely hated Ali with good reason.
@@joshualowry2000 I don't think ali ever hated frazier. It was always business with him. Ali even called foreman before their fight and told George that he would be responsible for all the promoting for the fight.

Lol this wasn’t friendly Trash talking.. this goes beyong good taste.. ali marked frazier for his whole life and some say he went too far
What a colorful time in boxing. Today it’s depressing. Guys don’t have this character. Everything’s phony and contrived. This is classic. These guys talked at the press conference, at the weigh in, at the pre fight instructions, and during the fight. And the fight lived up to the hype. Greatest sporting event in history.
w900L The “Thrilla in Manila” was better, but this easily goes into the top five.
Joe only talked to Ali, I loved Joe saying, "This is today!"
Man, everything Frasier says is just so lovable.
Love him or hate him Ali believes in what he says
rest in peace both champs
Back then when trash talk was even as entertaining as the real fight
Joe Frazier really held his own here against Ali. Ali’s confidence was shaken against Frazier. He had never met anyone so genuinely confident about beating him. I think Joe had beaten Ali mentally before they stepped into the ring. And Joe knew it.
Ern C ...Ali's confidence wasn't anywhere near shaken. However, The Greatest did clown around during the bout, took Smokin' Joe for granted and lost that fight. Furthermore, the odds were against Ali since he became the objector regarding the war in Vietnam. The white conservatives, were still hateful and cruel to The Greatest, never gave him a chance, PERIOD!!! Frazier didn't defeat Ali unanimously. He delivered that knockdown which gave him that slight edge, which was a wake up call for Ali. Afterwards, it was Smokin' Joe who unquestionably looked like the loser. The photographs was the proof in the pudding. The latter experienced complications from Ali's punches. The latter walked with just a swollen right jaw.the
@@brucescott4261 This is nonsense. Joe pounded Ali relentlessly for 15 rounds and won easily a unanimous decision. Credit Ali to this day for not being KO'd on those murderous left hands in the 15th round. But this was Joe's shining moment, he whooped Ali in every way possible, this night was his. Ali, a great warrior and champion, had plenty of shining moments prior and to come after this night.
@@ANTHONY0808able It’s like Foreman said once. Joe was the best in the world that night. No one could beat him then.
