The video is showing you exactly what a lot of people see on the outside.. The song is telling you whats happening on the inside. How many time have you heard those words " I had no Idea" after someone takes their own life.. As the song says "If only I'd have known".
I read that Lewis Capaldi wrote this song about his Aunt who committed suicide. Let the ones you love know often. You never know what someone is going through even when they look so happy on the outside.
The end of the video is someone calling her voicemail to hear her voice again.
I think she called the suicide hotline because she's having suicidal thoughts but changed her mind and instead said "Ah just kidding leave a message at the beat"

@@jusperlangcuyan2462 Nah its her actual voicemail cuz if it wasn't, the automated voice telling the person to record their message, wouldn't have come after it. Her voice mail was just a funny, light-hearted one (to show that even people who joke and have fun can be struggling deep down) Jennifer is correct I believe in that it is more than likely somebody listening to her voicemail to hear her voice again since many people do that after someone they love passes. Either that or it could be that somebody was trying to get through to her when looking for her and it went through to voicemail.
Don’t feel insensitive. I think you did a good job reacting. The moments were sweet in the video because that is what you remember when they are gone. You remember their beauty and you wish you could have made it better so they would have stayed. My little brother shot himself and I think this video and song captures the feelings of those they leave behind perfectly. It has been years but the pain never dies it just finds a quiet place to live in your soul.
He wrote this from his moms perspective about his aunt commiting suicide when he was 6..i follow him on insta😭 she showed no signs noone had any warning n she seemed so happy ..he only writes n sings about real ppl and situations..that n his voice is why his music hits SOO hard 👆😭😭
This video shows that even the person who is so happy and cheerful on the outside could be suffering and drowning in sadness. His aunt killed himself so in general this song is about suicide
While it is about suicide, its more about what people go through after a loved one has died, and how they cope with the pain now that their world has changed how do they move on from this agaonizing wound how do they heal? Could they have done something to help their loved one feel better about themselves.

The video seems happy most of the way through to get the message across that even if someone you love seems so happy if you could see inside that person you may find a trouble soul, the person disguises it very well on the outside which gives their loved ones no clue what is really going on until unfortunatly it is too late to help them.
Capaldi was inspired by the suicide of his aunt while Capaldi was a child. The video is of happy moments recalled by a group of friends as they pay tribute to a young woman whose suicide shocked them

The video is made the way it is for that very purpose; the images are sweet and designed to show that everything is 'fine' - but it's only if you're paying attention to the lyrics that you start to think "hang on, something's not right here..." And then that dictates how you feel at the end when you get the reveal - if you were only looking at the surface-level images you're like "Wait - what the hell...?" but if you had already picked up on the lyrics you're like "Damn, I KNEW it! Shit, that sucks."
And that's often how it goes in real life as well; people only looking on the surface level just assume everything's fine and don't question anything, while those who see deeper feel concerned, but are afraid to 'break the bubble' of the person trying so hard to put up the happy facade, in case they 'make things worse' ... and then wish they had said something when they still had the chance.

This video is just mainstream fluff, it does mention death but it romantices it. The meaning of the song is about a relative's suicide, as mentioned by others. The Peter Capaldi video (Someone You Loved) is much more powerful (organ donation) also mentioned by others.
If the video depicted the real meaning this song wouldn't be half as popular. *_My opinion_*

I was comparing the videos in my original comment and how powerful the message(s) were to me.
This actual video is not about Lewis' aunt's death though. The girl seemed so happy and caring, they were deeply in love As far as I remember the video doesn't say she took her own life just that she died (I could be wrong). The way it was all shot it looked dreamy and soft even at the end when she had died. Even if it is from the boyfriend's perspective it was still romanticised however, he was taking comfort in her being with him when he closed his eyes as opposed to the gut wrenching despair and sadness that the death of a loved one brings.
