    I'm 30. Tenchi muyo was the first anime I'd ever seen. I'll never forget how I felt when I saw the light hawk wings. I love all the girls. Equally. It's such a good show.

    I respectfully beg to differ. Mihoshi was not much of an 'outsider', a character without a reason to be.
    Throughout the first OVA, it was beginning to be hinted that Mihoshi was related to Washu. This is why she can by pass all of Washu's security meassures from her lab.
    And Mihoshi's relation to Washu was confirmed in OVA 3.

      Actually, the occasional Kuramitsu family's ability to cross boundary's comes from Mikamo, Washu's husband. He met her by mindlessly wandering into places where she had set up supposedly impenetrable barriers. Mihoshi is Washu's great-great-granddaughter. Washu and Mikamo to Mikumo to Minami to Mitoto (who can mindlessly teleport herself and anyone with her while mopping) to Mihoshi.

      @@nonsuchned94 Sorry for the late reply. I just managed to see this post after so long. So if I remember correctly, It was said long ago, (this is information from the 90s so I am not clear on my memories) That Washu's security systems, when active, only "those of her bloodline can pass through without raising an alarm and/or issue". And since Mihoshi is her descendant, she could come and go at ease.

    I kinda like ova mihoshi more than than universes. If I remember right the mihoshi was top level at the GXP and something catastrophic happened and thats what caused her performance to fall. She's still a screw up but her reports took jurian high command 4 days (I think) to go through them because they were so thorough. I wish I heard more of that story honestly.

    • @nonsuchned94
      @nonsuchned94 Před 3 lety +5

      If you read the beginning of the True Tenchi Washu novel I think you get a sense of what makes Mihoshi a valuable asset even though she's messed up. the key is that she usually has perfect recollection of the things she does... but she can't organize her thoughts at all. So the Kagato report would describe everything that happened to her, every little detail that she might not even understand herself, but it would be described. Tenchi producing LHW, Tsunami revealing herself, Lost princes and princesses of Jurai, a largely domesticated Ryoko.... but it would also tell you about the weather, what she ate, TV shows she watched, being praised for sweeping the shrine...etc. etc. etc.

The TM movies Daughter of Darkness is based on the Hage. canon. In the Hage. canon, Kiyone has feelings for Tenchi as well as Mihoshi.

      Here in UK we didn't have that problem with anime it was shown midday after school on Cartoon Network, so we had to deal with censorship and cuts that made no sense, like at hot-springs in the forth episode Ayeka and Ryoko had bathing suits drawn on them. While in fifth episode after Kagato had captured Ryoko the scene where Tenchi ran into the hot-springs after heading the disturbance on Ayeka and Mihoshi was cut and just jumped to Tenchi, Ayeka, Sasami and Mihoshi tracking Kagato down, if am remembering correctly that is, it was long time ago nearly twenty years now.

    And in the process they gutted Mihoshi, turning her into a bumbling idiot that is completely dependent on Kiyone, with nothing going for her.
    I honestly thought you were going to talk about Aeka and Ryoko, since Aeka was supposed to be Ryoko's disguise/alter-ego when she went into town looking for Tenchi. But they liked Aeka so much they made her her own character.
    Mihoshi was actually meant to be a one-off character. But the Pioneer execs liked her so much they insisted that she be made permanent. So everything after episode 4 had to be re-written.

    Nice video but I respectfully disagree...
    Mihoshi and Kiyone in Tenchi Universe aren't balanced characters on there own because as individuals they are incomplete;
    In Universe without Mihoshi, Kiyone would be dull boring support character.
    In Universe without Kiyone, Mihoshi is incapable of surviving on her own.
    Mihoshi in the original OVA in my option was to act as mid point between Ryoko and Ayeka plus she had the advantage of not being as quick to lose her temper as either of them, while she also acting as counter to Washu a character who overthought everything while Mihoshi keep everything simple, which was good way to go with her character, the clumsiness, carefree nature and naivety/obliviousness just gave her, her own charm.
    While in the OVA, it was stated by Kagato and I think also Novels (True or GXP not sure which one though) or/and Doujunshi, that some unnamed event in Mihoshi's past was the reason her work was going down hill and she had problems focusing in the OVA. Thus if they explored this event and working through this event (like they did with the episode for Samami and Tsunami) this could have result in some great character development and good journey for Mihoshi's character and her relationship with Tenchi. But since Kiyone was so popular they created Noike instead.
    Personally I think the introducing Noike as both Tenchi's fiancee and Mihoshi's old partner didn't mean they had to make OVA Mihoshi more like her Tenchi Universe counterpart. After all Mihoshi even when she's competent is still a handful to handle to deal with. Neither would it have taken away from Noike as the Masaki house still needed a den mother to help everyone mature, so Noike was good character without devolving Mihoshi's character. At least this is how I feel.
    Otherwise a very enjoying analysis, sorry for a lengthy comment, thank you for the video :)

      Unfortunately, almost the entire cast of Universe has no reason for being. I can't even remember if it ever explained how they all came to be there or why they would fall for Tenchi in that story. the last time I watched it, I got halfway- they're all caricature versions of the OVA characters. Mihoshi is a walking lobotomy, Washu's a Madder Scientist, Ryoko is infuriatingly irresponsible, Ayeka is pure Ojou-sama with nothing to redeem herself.

    • @KaitouKenshiro
      @KaitouKenshiro Před 3 lety

      @@nonsuchned94 Actually in 'Tenchi Universe' they did take the first five episodes to reintroduce the cast anew to us;
      Episode 1: reintroduced Tenchi, his dad, grandfather, Ryoko and Mihoshi.
      Episode 2: reintroduced Ayeka
      Episode 3: reintroduced Sasami and Ryo-Ohki
      Episode 4: reintroduced Washu
      Episode 5: Introduced Kiyone
      reintroductions where done adequately but yea I agree they where all just caricatures of there OVA counterparts, except Kiyone how just filled in all Mihoshi missing parts and somehow making the Universe Mihoshi and herself worse.
      It was 'Tenchi in Tokyo' where just they opened with everyone living with Tenchi and no explanation until episodes 7 and 8, hell at first when I first watched the first episode of 'Tenchi in Tokyo' I thought if it was sequel to Universe till Ryo-Ohki could change into mecha for Sasami then I was like what the f**ks going on, till the previously mentioned episode 7 and 8, where everything finally got explained. Tenchi in Tokyo was worse Tenchi series.

    The most annoying thing about Mihoshi's OVA character is that they simply have never taken the time to explain "the incident"- just clues, something to do with a romantic relationship, her brain was apparently badly warped in an attempt to brainwash her or something. Mentions in the GXP novels that she is actually being treated. I guess Kajishima had a plan to write a fourth True Tenchi Novel about her but simply didn't.
    The annoying thing about Universe's Mihoshi is trying to figure out how a walking lobotomy can function at all. Useless.

    This video was very well done. I personally like OVA Mihoshi to Universe. I think her place at the GXP made more sense: clumsy, but competent, whereas in Universe, it makes no sense how she still has a job, even with Kiyone as a partner. She's more annoying than funny imo. As for a character arc/growth, I don't think she has much of one in either the OVA or Universe so the change seems more to just introduce Kiyone as a new character. But I'm rewatching both now so I could be wrong.

    Yeah, no. The OAV isn't the source material. The source material is the original creator - Masaki Kajishima - and his series of self-published novels and doujinshi.
    Mihoshi is particularly important as part of the ruling family of Seniwa and is a direct descendant of Washu. All stuff a little bit of research would have turned up.
    Seriously, TV series apologists hack me off something fierce.

    • @JordanHJ
      @JordanHJ  Před 4 lety +4

      The OVA is it's own entity. Some of the inspiration came from his earlier works, but is its own thing. None of what you said though changes the fact that they took the characteristics of the character shown in the OVA and split it into two. I know Mihoshis backstory in the OVA, I'm not sure why you are alluding as if I don't.

      I kind of agree. Some videos put an out-sized importance on Hasegawa and Hayashi, but the core of the ideas always came from Kajashima. But I'd say that what gets put into the shows that he supervises is the Canon as soon as they get put down. The early Doujins have ideas and some don't pan out, later ones tell stories that turn out differently. What is definite is that he doesn't care too much for others ideas... as he rightfully his a sense of ownership to the story.
