Even though he is only around for like two episodes, kagato has ended up being one of my all time favorite villains. He is just so cool and mysterious, and his English voice actor knocked his performance out of the park

Kagato is one of the most memorable villains in anime to me, I always remembered him being threatening and that he had a cool voice. Watching this again years later, his voice now kind of reminds me of David Bowie when he played the Goblin King in Labyrinth.

Also a great end. Rather than go out screaming "No! I'm invincible!" like so many villains he calmly acknowledges he's been outmaneuvered and his last line is just "You've won, boy."
He's crazy smart, enough to trick Washu. He plays the organ like some PotO wannabe. He has floaty hands that he uses to hypnotize you. He uses Ryoko for 700 to destroy crap, and then keeps her in an hour glass like Jafar. Dudeiscreepy. xD

I've trained in a strong Beam Saber form that might have been difficult for Kagato to Counter. The form that I have been practicing is an All Offense sort of form. It requires both a bit of Anger,and a STRONG sense of Justice!!
Tenchi Muyo: *ahem*...THE GREATEST HAREM ANIME EVER!!! In all actuality now a days it is a rarity to find harem animes that have an equal amount of action in it, and unless I'm mistaken Tenchi Muyo is practically the father of harem animes!
I'm not sure if Tenchi Muyo was the first in the genre (it was certainly the first of its kind in America thanks to Toonami), it was definitely the most popular and helped make it a viable genre in anime. But what Tenchi Muyo does the best is that it has an overall plot outside the usual Harem antics and fanservice which a lot of the latest harem shows just don't have, like you were saying.
_"I will die. I know that, Ayeka and such a thing doesn't matter. Someday you will understand."_ A line that stands out. Yosho would rather live and die a life that he feels has some meaning, than live forever in a life that makes him unhappy.
This OVA has such brilliant, fast pacing. So many anime today are slow and plodding, spending large amounts of time talking about things happening and not actually showing us what is happening. Each episode had very clear purpose as to how it told the story, with many of the first episodes being devoted to introducing the major characters, their relationship to Tenchi, and their role in the story. The result is a 13-episode treat that is consistently exciting and boasts great character development.

Jonathan Martin In the manga, I think Yosho also taught several historical samurai how to fight in the 700 or so years between him sealing Ryoko away, and Tenchi coming into the picture.
So... a little background on Kagato. (This is only hinted at in the 3rd OVA series, so you gotta hunt for this info) Washu had a friend named Naja, who was a girl. Said friend disappeared one day, so Washu clined said friend... but the clone, was not at all like her friend. That clone eventually found, and then fused with, a male Ryoko prototype Washu made. Said fused being then changed uts name to Kagato, got rid of its female galf and left her before becoming the galactic level evil jerkass Renchi would later cut in half come the first OVA series. But... all of that background is why he and Ryoko have similar powers. He can't use Ryoko's gems though. Also, Mihoshi is related to Washu through Washu's first child.
As a kid I somewhat knew that some of these characters had some blood relation and would get married and have children but it never really bothered me. It's a story about aliens from another world that have their own culture and biology so I assumed that their rules were not the same to that of Earthlings. With that in mind if Jurai were a real place and they landed on Earth and we judged their culture, I'm sure they'd judge us on how primitive we are and our social norms. It really made me think outside the box when it came to how I think about culture and am not grossed out to things outside the norm.
Man Kagato made such an impact. Shame he never really came back after this. He reminds me of the shredder in the first tmnt comic, taken out in the first iteration and then never comes back.
This scene is so good. Tenchi was such an important show during my formative years. I don’t really enjoy ova 2 , 3, 4+ etc., as much, so I don’t rewatch them. But ova 1 is always a classic as a stand-alone story. 🥰
Katsuhito Masaki/Yosho is more like a lecherous Obi-Wan Kenobi but Obi Wan none the less. He did taught his grandson Tenchi how to home in his own swordmanship while being the Shinto Apprentice. I wish we can see him fight more since he can hold on his own against Kagato and mind-cntrolled Ryoko in the current OVA.

Modern anime can’t beat this art style. So colorful, vibrant. Tho not perfect and certain outlines can look a bit weird, it’s better than the trash made today using CGi.

Kagato's dub voice seems to be the only good dub voice in the entire series. Norio is great too but... then I heard him sing... as Kagato... can't take it seriously.
And the action itself is still mostly confined to the solar system. But we get looks at the big dogs, the structures of the higher dimensions, and Kami Tenchi himself.
This scene is burnt into my mind forever. Loved this show as a kid. I'm in my 30s now but I still remember this scene the most. Such a great show.
