Music video by Genesis performing Turn It On Again (2004 Digital Remaster). - Hudba
Hardly anyone mentions just what an awesome vocalist Phil is. When you think about it, he practicly owned the 80s.
I want a cliff Richard and Phil song! That would be cool with there moves
I wouldn't go that far!!
@@jeffallinson8089 Phil Collins was an absolute legend but yeah... I wouldn't go that far either
And the crazy thing is, he was not suposed to ... But yup i hear you man. On a pop perspectiv he did. But for me MJ is the singer of the eighties.
Nicolas DUBOS Actually, in the UK Shakin' Stevens owned the 80s. True.
The most underestimated and undeservedly despised band of all time. .... Thanks Genesis.
My dad used to play this band on vinyl, used to jig around to it, saying he thought he looked like Phil. Lol.
I'd never heard of them until he introduced me to them in the 80's.
Now since he has passed away I imagine him listening with me.
How could these guys create such catchy songs with such complicated harmonies! Simply admirable!!
Don't forget the time signature. 6/4+7/4 and still catchy. Proof that songs don't need to be always the same easy shit to work. At least in the 80s haha
@@mbaraka92 very much closer to modern pop* in fact if not for the instruments used, a bridge between prog and pop.
*well, specific types of modern pop, closer to fusion...
a jazz musician playing pop.. its in him 😂@@mbaraka92
I remember this at the time it was like a breath of fresh air!😂😂😂
I suppose they write them down.
Love this song. Very much the transition from Genesis's 70s style to the 80s style.
years pass, but i'm never tired to listening this song
👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Its a good song no doubt about it
I give that a big thumbs up Varvara...X :)
Varvara Kri 👍🏾❤️
Varvara Kri... give me your telephone number! You are so beautiful! From Italy! ❤
There's only one problem with this song. It's just not long enough. ❤
Saw him on breakfast TV this morning. It was heartbreaking to see how frail his failing health has made him.
Love you Phil. ❤🎶
Bless him x

Phil's voice has a gorgeous tone.. love his voice.. it's in the same league as sting.. unique sound 💜
THE BEST
This is what 1980 sounded like. It didn't sound bad, did it.
Once Gabriel left it let out a different sound
❤👌
One of my all time top ten songs. Phil Collins incredible vocalist never tire of listening to this
This when Phil started to realize he could really sing. Epic.
Jesus! I forgot how so good this is.

My favourite Genesis song.
Main Riff in 13/8, amazing how they can transform not ordinary time signatures in radio hits.
True Geniuses and Masters.
100%!! Genius songwriting and musical concept 👍🏽❤🎶
It’s not 13/8, it’s 13/4. But I suspect the band ‘hears’ it as one bar of 6/4 then one bar of 7/4. 😊
I wish I understood what that means.
It must be wonderful to hear a song and really understand it!

TURN IT O-O-O-ON
TURN IT ON
TURN IT ON AGAIN
Can't stop singing this song...
Totally. It just sticks in your head. I had it buzzing around in mine today and found they made a video. What memories. Then there were Three concert was the first time I saw them live. Then the Duke tour which was amazing for me. I often wondered what they were like in the early 70's as I had also recently had seen a Steve Hackett and a Peter Gabriel Concert. I missed out!
40 years on and still Turning it on again😀👍
Cut
Mike Rutherford always looks totally relaxed, great song to boot !
He really appears relaxed in any vid
He's stoned as balls every time
He show you, he could show you some of the relaxation tips in his life
God bless You Phil ❤
This track and Squonk are true gems with Phil's vocals. I do love the outro to this.
My God , what talent..the British musicians of the 60s, 70s and 80‘e were the equivalent of the Italian painters of the renaissance.
Big talk Keith, big talk. Another way of putting it is 'a load of old bollocks.'
ahahah jesus
👏 🙏 🤝 👍
Certainly has more impact
@@perrin6 Yeah those artists from 650 years ago that people can still name and still recognise their masterpieces had zero impact when you think about it. They really pale in comparison with the lads in Genesis and Humble Pie etc.
One of the songs that really shines the light on their genius as a trio
Back in the day when Phil had the power to split himself and sing while playing the drums.
He had and has great talent stay safe 🙏
Bit like star trek.
Also he managed to perform in Both Live aid In London and America in the same day,Back in July 1985 he played first in London then took an airplane and went to The USA to perform
Not just an airplane my friend he took a Concorde. The only way it could be done.
Tremendous drumming. Shifting the snare beat around is just brilliant. Such a fantastic talent.
Drumming and singing at different beats which is why he is clapping to keep in time. Total legend
Phil Collins is a master.
A total performer and musician
Phil is so chill and down to earth he made us all feel like we could be rock stars too.
Turn it oooooon, turn it on turn it on again!!!!
This song is brilliant. A pulsating pedal tone, a fist-pumping beat, soaring power chords - almost like they are channeling AC/DC (Thunderstruck, written ten years later, has a similar feel. Mashup, anyone?). In 1980, Genesis was moving toward shorter song formats and pop-oriented themes, but they were still thinking as a prog-rock band. As a drummer, I count this beat as six bars of 4/4 and one of 2/4, although someone here pointed out that 13/8 works, too. A stroke of genius is the modulation at 0:49 ("I can show you. . ."). It sounds epic, but it's rather straightforward. The bass goes from B to C, and Mike plays a D major chord over the C, giving it that #11th sound. Then they go back to B. Power chord magic. But the real fun comes in the E minor section, where they go into 3/4 time. And 4/4 and one bar of 5/4. I wish they had stayed in this vein for a few more albums.
Look up the "Musical box" documentary, the only Genesis documentary which includes the "calling all stations" line up and has interviews with Ray Wilson, Bill Bruford, Chester Thompson and Daryl Steurmer.
In that doc, Mike tells us how that song came to be. He recalls playing a slower version of the riff and Phill telling him "Do you realize that's in 13/8?" so Mike at first argued with him that it was in 4/4 but when Phil started counting along with the riff, he indeed ended up on 13.
So to the band themselves, the song is in 13/8 and who am I to tell them otherwise?
What a brilliant in-depth analysis - almost as good as the song itself ! I always felt Genesis created more interesting material together than they did in solo projects. It's sad that they don't write together anymore.
Yes. More sophisticated than it appears at first listen.
It's in 13/4, properly, I wish Phil (and everyone else) would stop saying that, but still, ....
@@Drchainsaw77 Damn straight. Phil and the boys should tell their publisher to fix the official sheet music, where it’s 4/4 + 2/4 + 4/4 + 3/4 )
His voice is everything my child hood memories !!!
This is why I love 1980. This exact sound was stellar.
Phil: "So lads, what's the time signature?" Mike and Tony: "Yes."
13/8 isnt it?
I interpret the verses ("all I need is a TV show") as 1 bar of 6/4 followed by 1 bar 7/4 - repeat. The end chorus outro is the same . The "I can show you" parts are straight 4.
☝🏻😆
Check out Warren Huart's in depth analysis of this song. Really interesting :-)
When I was younger, it was all about heavy rock. I still love those bands, but there is now room in me to appreciate brilliant stuff like this. Top drawer.

These genesis post Hackett e Gabriel suck, dude....

Just about to become one of the biggest stars in the world! And of course he was. What a fantastic voice. What melodic sense. He was totally for real. He'll be lauded in future, up there with Prince and Michael, Madonna and Springsteen. He deserves to be.
Great stuff 🙂🙂
What a tune. You can’t dance to this Because it’s done it a 13/8 signature. This was a time when music was music and played by people who knew how to sing and play their instruments. God I miss this stuff. Never will you hear it again in today’s world. So turn it on again for 2020.
I need to go back to see them in concert ASAP 😢😢😢😢

Longest wait for a song's "hook" in the history of modern music. The wait is worth it.
I think Phil Collins had a very good voice and the Genesis musicians were sublime, super talented and intelligent. I love Peter Gabriel, but as a soloist.
A also think Phil Collins was wonderful but Peter Gabrial come on Peter Gabrial
Agree totaly !
Phil Collins the King of pop music of all times. Hello from Algeria فيل كولينس ملك اغنية البوب لكل الازمنة بلا منازع
I enjoy both sides of Genesis, though primarily their earlier years (pre-'78). Collins has a great voice, but I appreciate Peter Gabriel's creativity more.
@@creaketh When it comes to creativity, Phil Collins certainly doesn't have to hide behind Peter Gabriel.
From Trespass to Duke, Genesis was probably the best band ever. It's absolutely mindblowing what a level they reached back then. Even the more commercial tracks from that time (Follow You Follow Me, Turn It On Again) is absolutely fantastic. They were one of those band that you wished to be more successful than they were. When they became successful, however, sadly the music went down a negative spiral IMO. From Abacab and forward I think they became to zappy and commercial (even though that era still has some awesome tracks). That's why I consider Duke to be one of their finest moments. It perfectly blends together the Genesis that was and the Genesis that would come
His voice back then was incredible.
Genesis turn it on again classic music from the eighties bring it all back again so we can be happy again and not sad anymore good times back then

In 80s he became 'that cheesy pop ballad singer' who cashed in on older audience and that association sticked till to this day

For people who say this is already pop music: Ever heard a pop song that's in 13/4 for most parts and where the refrain comes only at the end?
Still pop
Counting a bar of 13 crotchets is a bit much - but each to their own.

This is just such classic Genesis!!! A truly iconic song. And the Duke album which it is from, is FULL of the musical brilliance that Genesis are famous for.
Love this song, my mum gave me one of her cds Abacab, way before my time, but I love most of the tunes on it, this however, "turns me on again" live as well, classic rock,
Abacab is a great album, but this song is from the previous one, called "Duke", released on 1980:)
Please take me back in time when the music was so good. I listen to this now and realize how bad a lot of the music is today....or am I just an old dreamer...keep it up boys great song.
Not just you... There are some dreamers around...
All the good new music is nowhere near the charts. It's not popular so it gets missed quite easily.
Some people may argue that we’re just old and we don’t get the new music of today.
I would strongly disagree and say that actually even a lot of young people realise how superficial today’s music is when compared with music by bands from the 70’s and 80’s.
I was 8 or 9 when this song was released and it absolutely blew my mind! 🤯
Brilliant musical composition. True talent from each band member. More importantly it’s music which has stood the test of time. Can the same be said in years to come of much of what we hear today...I doubt it.
Can I come if u go please

Genesis - Turn It On Again
After my first experience of Genesis with ‘Follow You Follow Me’, this one kicked the ‘70’s Genesis out for good.
This was still pre-solo-Collins and on this one his voice sounded a lot different.
My eldest sister had bought their album ‘Duke’ so I didn’t get to hear it from her that often so it was appearances on the TV and radio which I had to rely on.
It was never played enough in my opinion.
