The Shelby Series 1 Was Carroll Shelby's Glorious Failure - Autopian Drives w/ Zack Klapman

- Carroll Shelby had never built a car from the ground up until the Series I so it had to be perfect. It wasn't. Far from it. Zack Klapman drives the car and takes us through everything that went wrong but finds, actually, it's better than you'd have guessed based on period reviews.

Shout out to the camera ops and editor for making me seem coherent.
“seem” 😂
Well done
Great job
Show. The. Car.
You did a nice job its good to see you getting more screen time.
Zack is so great. Glad we are seeing more from him
This is right up there with the current Hagerty/Jason Cammisa content. Great production values, amazing host. Zack is a great driver, narrator and car expert. His deadpan humor is always entertaining.
Great video Zack and team!
I know some people don't like the styling, but I still think this is one of the most beautiful cars made during my lifetime
Great video from Zack! Long forgotten story well told
Zack's sense of humor, oddball references, and delivery are great. Great to see something different!
I had no idea Oldsmobile helped fund this project, I just figured Shelby bought a bunch of Aurora engines.
This is awesome. Great Job Zack!
You're next, right?
This was outstanding. Great production, great filming and audio. Zack is a treasure. Can’t wait for more.
Great video! Zack knocked out of of the park
The bagel analogy is brilliant! Love it!
Love the format of telling a story of a car many people don't know alot about. Presented well and very interesting. Hopefully Galpin will let you drive some more from their collection
shelby's white chicken chili mix is the move, especially if you add fire roasted corn, and brown the chicken using hot ones los caliente verde sauce
This is great. Is Zack partnering with Autopian now?
Yeah! We're buds and hope to work together a bunch.
Who is Zack not partnering with now is the better question. He's everywhere!
Great video Zack, awesome to see some solo content from you. I am jealous to see you reviewing and driving this. As a 35 year old car guy, I remember driving this car in the Test Drive 5 computer game as a 10 year old, where the car was a total of 10 pixels maybe? Lol. Always great to see real examples of these being driven! Keep it up Zack! 👊
It's a damn shame GM didn't do anything more with the Aurora V8. It's such a neat engine that doesn't share the issues of the Northstar it shares architecture with. Similar to how 2.2l Subarus rarely blow headgaskets.
Its a Shelby! The only ground up car ever produced by Shelby and most likely the last one. That alone is a home run in my book and a collector car for sure!!
Great review! Those Esprit’s look so good! Would love Zack take on those
Great video. I was around during all this, dealing with Mr. Landy was memorable....I still own a CSX-VNT that Shelby developed with Chrysler and feel like the CSX is an abandoned car, the Series 1 must be even more so.
Zach's humor in his videos is fantastic.
This is finest, most informative video I’ve ever seen on the Series 1… well done 👏
Absolutely love these cars. Glad to see a child hood hero get some recognition it certainly deserves.
Hmmmmm that little silver number from the mid 2000s behind Zack before the lights shut off would be quite an interesting second Shelby to be reviewing... ;)
Anything, huh? How about a follow-up with that silver Ford Shelby V10 behind Zack at 19:00? Any chance there's a GR-1 around there, too??
Yay Zack! Love your choice of car to review. Here for (hopefully) many more!
This is all hearsay from a guy at the dealer I worked for. Shelby skirted the crash requirements originally saying he was only building 500 units and after 250 he would crash a couple. He got to 247ish and stopped selling them, so never needed to have the nannies. The dealer there sold a couple and one was regularly serviced even many years later. So many shared parts it was comical. It was owned by a wealthy guy with a few toys and it had no miles on it, but it had the supercharger! It was a silver/blue stripe car.
What a great video, thank you!
I used to love that car when it first came out. I think it looks best with silver paint. Something else to note about the interior GM parts bin sharing, the instrument guage cluster is from the 1993 - 2002 Pontiac Trans Am.
Finally a proper driving vid of these cars. Really unique sound
This was a great video, this was video quality of a channel with multiple zeros larger of an audience, I see you guys really taking off. Nice work don’t give up on this.
Great review, I love joy seeing these shop cars
Love to see Zack on something
Loved it. I'd be happy watching a multiple part series just going through that shop. (Especially that cobra concept car hiding in plain sight).
I agree it wasn't ever a good buy given competition, but they look incredible, seem to drive well enough and for a collector with deep pockets wanting an ice cream car, it's pretty cool.
Zach did a great job. The low view count does not represent the quality of the video.
Great video all around. Zack is awesome and that Shelby sounds delightful!
Great video. Keep up the good work!
This was the first video on Carroll Shelby's Series 1 car that I've seen, and I've seriously been looking into possibly buying one of these in the future as an investment, and as a Shelby fan. Just wanted to know what I was getting into before I consider buying one. Great video, with lots of info to think about. Looking forward to more videos of the same, New Subscriber as well!
Great vide, always wanted to get a good opinion on this one. Thanks Zack!!
"Anything?..." '05 Ford Cobra prototype peeking in from the background.
Take Beau up on his offer and drive the 2004 Ford Shelby Cobra Concept in the background (18:59)!
Imagine if they could make one of these today with modern manufacturing capacity.
That was great!
A car review for car people of an interesting car.
If you keep em coming like that, you'll be at the top very soon.
Entertaining video on not well known car. For my taste, I would take that seafoam green Lotus Evora in the background.
Great vid Zack, thank you.
As Buffalo Bill says, "lets start with the skin" 😅
5:00 As someone who is currently sitting about 15ft from his own C5 Z06 I can confirm that 2650lbs is absolutely light as fuck when talking about cars. I often wonder how they couldve made it much lighter. Especially when I take into account that the daily driver is like 4200lbs. I mean everything you see under the skin on the Z06 had the same criteria applied "how can we make this part lighter?" Titanium Exhaust, Even the power seats are only like 40lbs
People don’t really realise that ferraris used fiat parts since always, the cited Ferrari 360 had punto aircon unit and stereo for example, lambos and pagàni share the radio with rovers, and same did jaguar
These are gonna be fun!
needs a little jam and that's a tasty body panel
The owner complains about the negative treatment from the press but then goes on to say how challenging it is to drive - the press was simply being honest & objective! It is a special car for sure, just not necessarily all good by objective measures.
I really like the video and the editing is great but whoever did the sound mixing, the beginning has Zack's voice drowned out.
Enjoyed it well done 👍
A car I didn't know existed. Very good looking, all the vintage styling cues, A real shame it never got off the ground.
A local specialty car consignment dealer near me has the #3 car right now. It's...umm...interesting. You can definitely tell it's hand built.
I didn’t even know this car existed holy crap
I bought a truck full of series 1 parts from Shelby when they canceled the program. Sold every single part in under a month.
Thank god they never let their tuner Gill touch the Aurora engine, Dude could fk up a jam sandwich.
I gotta get my hands on that chili mix
I used to be around the one that was in the Lee ann rymes commercial it was a car dealer my mom used to work for car his brother had one also
I remember thinking the looks were hit or miss, and that it was a kit car, but didn't mind because I thought it was cheap... knowing the price, I can see why it didn't take off
Good to see Zack.
Thats funny, I remember Motortrend at the time saying good things about the Supercharged Series 1. It spanked on one of their performance comparos IIRC. The NA one was a diffetent story. Regardless it still looks amazing today.
Zack, you gotta do that Shelby behind you at 19:00.
that's too sick to pass up
8:21 abrupt engine edit. More on the motor pls
I'd like to see a real world review on one of those Lotus Esprints. I only know it from Gran Turismo.
Excellent! Just lose the annoying guy with the man-bun who won the “How Hollywood can you get?” contest.
I feel like every time I hear a story about somebody trying to make a GM-based sports car, GM fucking ruins it or stonewalls it. This happened with the C4 ZR1 and the Lotus Carlton.
Now I’d like to see Zack review the different generations of Dodge Viper, it being the Mopar equivalent of the Shelby Cobra and with the faintest touch of the man himself.
I feel like he gave away the viper to easy, I also think this car is the reason Shelby stopped being interested in cars for a few years before he died.
yes! more
Aurora V8's are easily found in the yard, SEND IT!
My second fav Shelby.
Cool car styling wise. Sounds like it has an exhaust leak
Goodyear Developed Special Tires for the Shelby Series 1
I love these cars.
As Buffalo Bill said?!?! Zach! BROOOOO 😂
Genuinely curious why Audi provided the image of the MSR Acura 😂
loved it
Get in that V8 Esprit!!
Love the front of these
Nice man-bun
Dohc V8 is very similar to bmw v8s of that era. Reminds me of an m62 with open headers
What Weiss watch are you wearing Zack?
Field watch.
"Or even a Le Mans winner" [courtesy: Audi]
Yo, that's a photo of an Acura winning Daytona...
Who else here discovered this car through Test Drive 5?
Still to this day. If I were to design a car. It would look like this.
Matt, Zack needs a raise or he is gonna split!
He should split anyhow. Matt is so fn whiney
It looks like a Miata and viper had a baby
why wasnt a coupe made
It looks like the bastard child of a ginetta g40r atvthe front and a lotus elan 26r at the back 😂
In all reality, Shelby wasn't an engineer or builder. He was a salesman-politician, assembled talent pools well. In all reality, his personality/character was very similar to Enzo- just he wasn't as cantankerous and understood "Cult of personality." Watch Stapleton42's episode with Lee Holman & that'll give you a better understanding of how he "Conducted business." Read about how he heard Peter Brock was getting an SCCA deal with Toyota in '70, ran over & pulled the carpet out from under Brock...to which Brock got up, brushed off, and went to Datsun to forge a deal. Shelby/Toyota failed so bad, Toyota pulled the money about midway through the season. Brock won & won for Datsun. There is more, but I think you can get an idea of how similar Enzo & Carroll were in a lot of ways.
Automotive journalism now is 98% A bad joke. The large dealerships and auto industry FUND THE "JOURNALISM"!
Thats a mazda miata
You really not going to mention his involvement with the Viper? Really?
I've been waiting for this video for so long! Always was curious about these since they were beating me in Gran Turismo 4!
Edit: notice how Zack never said it was all that good in the end talking to the owner 😬😬
Also, a F355 I think was low 100s and a Viper ran 4s 0-60s even if it was compromised though not to this degree. Big prototype vibes here, though always looked like a really unique good looking car.
Interesting how BMW never seemed to need to go transaxle to claim 50-50 weight distribution too, I know, a moot comparison but… makes you think.
I’d love to see more of these vids! Zack’s always a great host!
Take that Northstar out n LS Swap it. From what was being done GM was protecting the Corvette at all costs.
Buffalo Bill LOL.....
“Like Buffalo Bill said, let’s start with the skin “ … lmfao. Zack, be my best friend please.
Is it garbage? Idk bozo thats why were heres
Looks like a cross between a Viper and a Miata. Perfect for body building hair dressers.
And stop perpetuating the notion that 50/50 weight distribution is perfect. Perfect for what?
Technology was just at a turning point when Shelby built this car. A dual clutch and paddle shifters would change the entire experience. The Olds engine was supposed to be the IRL version, but they couldn't get it to pass emissions testing. The other huge weight was the crappy retractable top that was very heavy and rarely worked. Out of the gate this would have been an unreal car. So unreal that it would have made a Corvette look horrible. One rule at GM... The Corvette is always the fastest car GM makes. Every car that doesn't follow this rule has a short life at GM. Thanks from for the video from an Olds fan!!
