I was at this match! So many legends battled here in Houston during those days. Even Andre the Giant! My family of 8 were devoted attendees every Friday/Saturday night and we even sat around TV Sunday morning to watch the reruns w/Paul Bosche and those crazy commercials as well. IW Marks jewelry and even Mattress Mack w/zoo animals on the side of I45 tent!
I hated how WWF turned JYD into a dancing clown "Grab them Cakes!" He lost his Hero status once he left Mid South & never received a title shot for any single or tag team titles.

Damn Butch Reed was a beast in his day! JYD used to be in good shape but this was around the time before he went to WWE started getting flabby. But even this was better than what he was later in his career! Both men are still legends though! Rest in peace to both! 🙏🏿❤️
One of Butch Reed's best matches was the Summer of 1983 after the Mid-South Wresting Fan Vote who was going to be JYD's Partner & Hacksaw Jim Duggan was picked over Butch Reed. Just before Butch Reed turned heel he had a damn good match I can't even find on CZcams. Butch Reed came to ring & said "There's a Controversy going on here! Why yaw picked that Hillbilly Duggan over me to partner with the Dog! I invite King Kong Bundy out in the ring!" Bundy stormed on the ring and Reed went to town on Bundy! That was a badass match with Reed getting on the top rope & doing a slingshot Shoulder Tackle so hard, Reed flattened Bundy and slingshot himself out the other side of the ring. Bundy came to and piledrived Reed winning the match. Butch Reed's next appearance after that is on CZcams when he turned heel and argued with JYD & DiBiase hit Dog with that cast.

When Vince got a lot of these guys they were peaked already as far as Physical Condition nd Prowess .. Evident on how Muscular nd Fit Butch nd JYD were at this time. Same with Ron Simmons , L.O.D , Demolition Harley Race , Ron Garvin , Dino Bravo , Ken Patera , Ko Ko B. Ware. , Steamboat etc .. Steroids or not their physique Pre WWF were Greek Like. You could tell these guys were in the Gym heavy nd still had worked out coming from Football nd other high level sports. And JYD was so Over in hys Pre WWE days in Watts territory , Vince snatched him , He could have easily held The WWF title in Hulkmania's Era. Strap could barley fit around their necks with massive Traps nd shoulder's.
Allot of those pro black wrestlers were well built back then Butch Reed, Ron Simons, Tony Atlas, Rocky Johnson, and there was one more I can't remember his name.....

As a black man I must say its a lot of sensitive black people in this comment thread. Of course the specialty match for someone named Junkyard Dog would be a dog collar chain match. He had this match with plenty of white wrestlers before Reed. This was one of if not the hottest fued at the time and anybody who was watching Mid-South at the time knew that eventually they would have a dog collar match. You young folks are too sensitive!
If you ever knew real history and watched Mandingo you would see that history repeats itself in so many different ways.They use to make slaves fight but in the 20th century they are willing to put on a show that their ancestors died in custody performing real brutality.

@Dion Mike well, yea. i know about the superdome match (august 2 i believe without looking). however, putting a dog collar match on 3 weeks.before the higher profile one at "starrcade" (and after the stip for that one was announced) is just good ol' pro wrestling promoter tricks. as said, i don't know how many people in the uwf territory also had access to m-a's tv show in 1983, but watss wanting to undercut their dig collar match with one if his own 3 weeks earlier is just how the game was played then, and is played now. in the late 80s/early 90s, wwf would book shows in arenas the night before wcw would run in the same arena, then run super long (like after midnight) so that the wcw crew would have as little time as possible to set up for their show (lights, pyro, chairs, etc.). promoters will be promoters.
