My boomer father told me that I was to never give a damn about pay, that I was to work because work gave me purpose and value to society and that was the real point to having a job. Pay was just 'there' I guess.
So wherever I hear "You shouldn't work for the money" I think it's because some people are either stupid enough to take that seriously or are hoping you're stupid enough to take it seriously. Luckily for me, I'm not.

Regarding the story about being told to smile more: I worked night shift at a well known Canadian coffee shop and was told I smiled too much and was too perky for an overnight shift. People actually complained to management and I was told to not smile so much. SMH.

Canada? So Tim Hortons then? Honestly, speaking as someone that worked years as the first morning shift person at a Dunkin Donuts, coming in at 4am to help night shift finish morning prep, night shift customers are a special breed. I have seen the same coffee shop clerk in the drive thru almost every morning at 4:30am for the past three years. She is consistently the happiest, perkiest human being I interact with in the course of a regular day.
I won't lie; half-asleep me often wonders what drugs she's on, or what else could explain her being that chipper before 5am as I pull out of the drive-thru. I'd never complain to anyone about it, but between me and my steering wheel, I do often question her sanity.

When I was in college I applied for a few jobs the first to respond was a "Rat trap" of a kids pizza chain. I started there but after 2 days of training for a location that hadn't even opened yet, I got an offer from the Pet Shop next door, the Pet Shop was offering $4 more an hour so obviously I explained this and they were fine to let me leave the restaurant understanding how much that was for a college student in the 90s. Problem was after a week of working at the pet shop I discovered I had an allergy to some of the products. It wasn't an allergy you could ignore, so I had to resign for medical reasons. The restaurant gladly took me back and reintegrated me into the training. The last day of training they went over a set of rules that they had neglected to tell anybody because they just weren't that important. Not important?! One of the main rules for the place that they didn't tell anybody till the day before they opened, we reserve the right to terminate your employment if you don't smile enough. They wanted the customers to think we were all extremely happy people to deal with their crotch goblins. So yes I quit twice before the business even opened its doors.

Smiling too much is creepy and most often a cover for something else anyway.
Anyone who smiles a lot or tells someone else to smile should in most cases be on your personal watch and be wary list because their smile is likely part of attempting to control your state of mind when interacting with them.
Seeing people smile encourages lowering your guard. One of the simplest things for a sociopath to learn.

She would sneak up on me while I was digging through pages of information to find the cause of a customer's issues and she'd tell me to smile. Like, I'm not talking to anyone and I'm trying to find the issue ASAP and you want me to creepily smile at my computer screen? Get out of here. She also had someone fired for not signing a card for a coworker. He didn't know the coworker and thought it was disingenuous to sign a card for someone he didn't know. The people who helped did what they could as it would've been unrealistic to teach them the entire cleaning process and expect them to do it all as they were going to have to go back to their departments at some point, yet the bare minimum was completed, and they gave me $100 as a thank you for showing and doing what I could. Right?! I just sat here in disbelief for a solid 30 seconds after the video ended, mouth open in shock, and wondering if I heard that correctly. I mean... what is WRONG with those people?? I'm not sure who's worse; the customer who saw fit to complain about an associate who lost their husband 3 days ago, or the manager thought the associate needed disciplinary action because "The customers always right"? No, but really?!!
The commenter before me could be right; the customer might have thought the associate was being sarcastic. But still, why on earth would you take that chance? If you're wrong and the associate was being truthful, you just made their already devastating situation just that little bit more miserable.
And the manager... I would be furious. I wonder if the manager told the customer that the husband had indeed just passed away and the associate was telling the truth. Why do I get the feeling they didn't bother and just said, "I am so sorry that employee made you uncomfortable and ruined your shopping trip. Rest assured, I will deal with that associate personally."
I'm not sure how I would've responded to that write up. I'd probably want to say something like, "You're absolutely right. Next time a customer orders me to smile, I'll immediately comply. Being the most miserable I've ever been is no excuse for not smiling! And the next time a customer correctly guesses something about me, I will never inform them that they were right and keenly observant! Instead, I will tell them that life is perfect and swell, all while grinning from ear to ear. And just so you're not confused boss; That was sarcasm"
Not that it would do much good, but I would've let my inner Karen loose and gone straight to HR with that write-up and filed a massive complaint about that manager before quitting. I mean, 3 days is way too soon to be back at work after your spouse dies as it is. But to be written up for essentially just confirming what a customer guessed? Seriously?? I guess if we're gonna rub salt into the wound, we might as well also add some lemon juice, vinegar, cat litter and battery acid for good measure 👍
Sorry for the rant. That story just made me so angry for them 😡 I really hope they're doing better now!

As in, replied within seconds simply stating "salaries are non-negotiable." Now normally I use my PTO in small increments. A Friday here, a Monday there, maybe a 4-day weekend for special occasions. But in that moment, I decided I'm going to burn it all up except for a week (in case of emergencies) I took 3 straight weeks off in a row. Now the way my company works for salaried folks, every day is broken into halves. If you work so much as a single minute, you get credit for the full 4 hour half. So every time someone called my personal phone with an emergency no one could solve, I logged on. After those 3 weeks were up, I had used precisely ZERO of my PTO hours, because not one single day passed where they couldn't get by without me at multiple points throughout the day. This information made it back up to HR, who this time took the situation more seriously. They ended up drawing up an entirely new job description that I could be "promoted" into, so that they could meet my demands while still sticking to their "salaries are non-negotiable" policy. And they tried to hire a couple backups to cover me, but quickly realized that "replacing" me would require hiring like 5 FTE's, since practically nobody is a one-man army like I am. Sure you can hire a web developer, but can that same web developer also write a SQL report, and then do a compliance delete on a spammed phishing attempt? Not bloody likely!!

i work as a night filler at a supermarket, we usually work from 6pm until the load is done but the store is still open until 9pm, so were working with customers on the floor. Normal filling procedure is you grab a box of say Doritos, open it and put the bags on the shelf, if you cant fit all of them on, then place the box on the floor, once youve done everything else you fill the box with other chips and stack it on top of the shelves. As far as i know, weve been doing it this way for over a decade.
But last year we got a new store manager, and a few months ago he made a new policy that boxes cannot be put on the floor, they have to be put up immediately because its a tripping hazard for customers and it looks messy. Whilst hes not wrong, it does cause massive issues.
Like weve had instances of the long life milk boxes falling off the shelves because the boxes on the bottom were half full, and the heavy ones on top made them crumple on one side, lean and fall off. And with pretty much everything else, the overheads were completly full of nearly empty boxes, making it a pain to pull anything down, especially if you needed something quick for a customer. We only have 1 tall ladder in the store, so if you need to reach the boxes that touch the celling you need this one and need to be at least 6 feet tall, that usually leads to customers waiting a long time while you search the entire store for this ladder.
Theres no MC here, just we now use a bit of common sense and dont follow this rule for the unsafe items, and we do not follow it at all after 9pm, which the manager wont notice anyway cuz hes never in the store after 6pm anyway. Hes not a horrible manager, but he does some sketchy things.
Like hes just introduced employee discount cards, which sounds great, until you realize the 5% discount is not for already discounted items, which is a vast majority of things in the store, and the 10% discount at the cafe is pointless cuz they just had a 20% price increase.

I've heard that some bosses have the idea that being a manager "is not a popularity contest." They either went to a sub-standard business college or they were sub-standard students. Being a manager is almost entirely about popularity. The job is to get the people on the team to get the work done in a timely fashion so that the company makes a profit. Anyone running a successful business will tell you that more popular the boss is with the team the more willing the team will be to work hard and deliver quality product or service. It's all about popularity. Anyone who says otherwise has just crawled out from under the cabbage leaf.

Anytime a new employee or manager or whatever told me I should be nicer and smile, I told them "I'm authentic and that's why people will come to me every day over anyone else. You can be a robot if you want but I'm real." Staff loved me, store management loved my performance but the corporate hated that they had no control and couldn't do a damn thing about it.

A little over a year ago I worked in a store that had a computer repair department, I was the lead of that department, my good manager quit and we got a new manager who ordered me to stop repairing computers because my ability to fix things and being honest to customers about what's likely to break was hurting extended warranty sales. (apparently the company didn't consider the warranty pricing of $100 $200 or $300 to be a hindrance when repair was $180, but I digress) They fired me a month later for insubordination, when I say they I don't mean the replacement GM she hadn't been there long enough to have the power so she made the DM come down and fire me, in spite of my argument that what she told me to do was ignore our service list.
A month after that the only other person skilled enough to take my place quit because they offered the job to a cashier who turned it down because he didn't know how to do any of it. A couple weeks after that she quit because she was tired of running an understaffed store that wasn't meeting quotas. A grand total of 2 people from when I worked there is still there, they've been through another GM who got the job and was fired for something, the quotas for extended warranty sales are worse, and they haven't been able to find anyone to take my place. Meanwhile I had another higher paying job in a different tech sector in 2 weeks after getting a glowing recommendation from the former good manager. I don't like it as much, but I do revel in knowing they've lost money in sales and bad management after firing me.

Part of why they enjoy the job is that the compensation is good so it feels like a favorable trade in terms of hours sacrificed for pay received. If you sour the deal, how can you expect people to still feel the same? Nobody is THAT passionate about bartending or cooking or serving or cleaning that pay is secondary. Pay is pretty much always going to be primary at a salaried position, if they wanted to work for free because it's their passion they'd volunteer at an animal shelter or something.
