The reason Raya starts over Ramsdale is composure on the ball, Ramsdale can look very nervy at times, Raya looks very calm & assured! Also lets not forget Raya was one of the best keepers in the league last season, he has hardly gone & signed soneone who wasn't up to par! Also Arteta wanted Raya before he got Ramsdale

Yeah, I always feel nervous when Arsenal is defending corners and set-pieces close to goal when Ramsdale is in goal. It’s only 2 games, but, as you guys have mentioned, Raya looks very calm which spreads to the defenders/teams. Ramsdale looks a tad erratic sometimes. Not to say that he’s a bad goalkeeper.

The only reason this has become controversial is because Ramsdale is a hugely likeable guy and of course English. The same reaction happened when Pep replaced Joe Hart who was another media favourite at the time. No one wanted to see Ramsdale benched but if we’re honest there are parts of his game he needs to iron out. I don’t think his distribution is as sharp as it needs to be and I also feel like he isn’t particularly commanding from corners and crosses. Raya appears to be ice cold while Ramsdale is perhaps more emotional and that can potentially mean losing concentration at times. He’s capable of producing some world class saves but Arteta is clearly looking at the bigger picture here and how he wants his team to function. There’s no room for sentiment if you’re trying to build a successful team. It should also not be forgotten that Raya was Arteta’s choice to replace Leno 2 years ago but we couldn’t get a deal done so Ramsdale was the alternative.

Great comment! I’ve noticed arteta wants a team that is always on an even kill. Meaning they don’t get too carried away with wins and no heads go down when losing. Xhaka and ramsdale were/are our most emotional players, this cost us at times last season. That way the only emotional player we have is zinchenko, which at times is needed but he can also adapt, so arteta probably had words with him about this, seems much more focused this season. When trying to win a league or even build a dynasty its details.

I don't understand what's so curious or strange about this , yes arteta signed ramsdsle but clearly the opportunity came up to get raya which they didn't want to miss out on and he clearly sees him as the eventual number one as thinks his a better keeper! The last 2 games the Arsenal defenders were able to head easy balls back to Raya away more than they have when Ramsdale is in goal from close range aswell and the way he was coming for crosses looked way better catching the ball not fisting it everytime . I was saying Ramsdale didnt do enough to get dropped but after the last 2 games Raya should be number 1 cant drop him .
I agree with you, even though I highly rate Ramsdale and feel sorry for him the way things have happened. I just hope that this does not cause any kind of bad blood in the dressing room

How did Keown not remember City went from Hart, to Bravo (Pep’s signing) who didn't work out, to then sign Ederson which would have proved his point about Arteta learning from Pep
Bravo did work out, as a backup to Ederson until his contract expired. He was never meant to be a longterm solution for City and he was never Pep's main target. He really tried hard to sign Ter Stegen instead. Ederson had only played 10 games in Portugal at that point so it's understandable that City weren't convinced to pull the trigger on him that summer.

Big difference between Raya and Ramsdale is the handling. Raya actually tries to catch the ball and is very good at it.I also really believe his aggressiveness for corners/free kicks is one of the biggest reasons he is in the side.

Arteta wanted Raya he was his no1 choice but brentford wouldn’t sell so he turned to Ramsdale. When Raya came he was always going to be taking over as no1, transitioned in exactly the same time that ramsdale transitioned in for Leno, straight after the international break

I just think Ramsdale needs a bit more composure and concentration with distribution, he may have become too comfortable, and then his ceiling is higher than Raya's, I know I'm going against the grain with this opinion though.
Last season AFC were fuelled by emotion. This was great but also their downfall. We need calm. Less crash and bang and more calm and control. Raya offers this over Ramsdale - yet another example of Arteta evolving to improve.

That doesn't mean substitute during a game, it means there were games where he wanted to have a GK that's good with his feet.
For example: against a low block you want Raya because he's like having another outfield player.

It's a funny one, even when people were bigging up Aaron Ramsdale last season, I always thought he had errors in him, he's still a great keeper, but he needs to calm himself down a bit, he gets over excited at times, Raya seems very calm, assured, relaxed and at the moment he's number 1.
I am encouraged that Arteta will do what he feels is best for club success, not about hurting a single players feelings.
Love Ramsdale but he has to accept this is highest level football - he will get plenty of games still tho

Arteta has changed how we play. He wants ball possession, short and long. That's why he's upgraded him. Ramsdale is a great keeper but football is tough
When it seems your Goalie isn't doing much, it means he is doing the right things that translates to the defenders playing great.
When a team back line is doing great, it translates to the midfielders doing great, which means the attack is getting service, which means goals, to which translates to WINS.
Raya is calmness & control personified. He catches balls is supposed to, punches away when supposed to, distribute with feet or hands when supposed to.
You see defenders leaving aerial balls cause they he know he'll claim them. They run to positions knowing Raya distributes balls to them.
Defenders are not trying to put a head or foot on very cross & shot at goal cause the positioning and connection of the back line is better with Raya manning the goal post.

It's crazy that we're talking about this so much. Martin is bang on here. This is the same change Pep made with Hart (and others) and Edison. Sure, Arteta bought Ramsdale, but anyone who coaches knows that the chemistry of the whole doesn't appear until everything is chugging. Now the system is grinding one of the pieces that doesn't fit well is Ramsdale. Easy decision for me. I honestly can't believe we're losing our minds over this.

You’d never know Raya has had two clean sheets from his first two starts based on the media coverage. The fact is Raya is the better keeper. Anyone who has actually watched Raya and Ramsdale over the years, knows that. The only reason this story has lasted for so long is because Ramsdale is English. The media will never come out and admit that but it’s the truth. Arsenal have two very solid goalkeepers but Arteta is leveling up.

Rotating goalkeepers is a very dangerous tactic and could be arteta's downfall this season. As a team you have to have consistency. The goalkeeper, and then in front of him, you have the spine of the team. The spine must remain as consistent as possible, as should in turn, the goalkeeper. Different goalkeepers have different styles. Some like to hoof it. Some like to ping it. Some like to run out and sweep up the danger. How are two centrebacks going to be able to adjust to the constant rotation of playing style happening behind them?
No one player is bigger than the club end of! I love Rambo but Raya is a clear upgrade. Better stopper, catching crosses, and passer. Its likely that Arteta isnt satisfied with Aarons growth and if im honest im not sure hes gotten significantly better

Arteta won't outrightly say Raya is my number one and Ramsdale you're my #2. He won't do that..... He has to say it's for competition and rotation. Which it is but in this moment in time Raya is ahead of Ramsdale and it's for Ramsdale to fight for that spot. If he can't Ramsdale will be sold and Arsneal will look for a better keeper. If that keeper takes Raya's place and Raya can't get back as a number 1 and wants to leave then Raya will be sold and Arsenal will get a keeper that can provide competition for that keeper. It's all about evolving the position and getting better as a team. It is a brilliant strategy.
Its a tough situation. most players compete for multiple positions, but a goalkeeper can only compete for one.

It's not bold, it's not surprising. Arteta tried to buy Raya before he signed Ramsdale. We signed the Brentford GK coach around the same time. Raya became available closer to contract ending and now we've landed him. This is a nothing story. We need two top players in every position, including GK.

The reality of the matter is this... We would not even have been having City Chase us until so late in last season, for there were some saves that Ramsdale made throughout the season, that with 99% of any other keepers those were goals, that somehow Ramsdale blocked.

TBH as much as Ramsdale is a good goalkeeper, he hasn't been that convincing in goal this season as he has hardly kept a clean sheet this term and he does look reckless at times.
Raya is more confident and assured when he plays.
And tbh I think Ramsdale's future is in doubt. Because at the highest level unlike the outfielders the goalkeeping position is 'reserved' for one player only.
For example Peter Schmichael, Edwin van der Sar & David de Gea each spent many years as Man Utd's no.1 keeper. Likewise Gigi Buffon was Juventus no.1 for more than a decade. Iker Casillas again was no.1 at Real Madrid for many years until he infamously lost his spot to Lopez in 2013. This is because the goalkeeper position requires obviously unique & special skills and not every footballer was born with those abilities.
So provided Raya does a great job he could be Arsenal's no 1 for years to come.

Raya is extremely comfortable with his feet and composed catching the ball. Ramsdale is still young and can be shaky at times.

Arsenal has an issue with trusting goalkeepers. Leno, Martinez, Fabianski, and Chezzer could all have had long careers at Arsenal but they did not.

Arteta is basically blaming Ramsdale for last year's collapse. Not fair, really. Saka lost his stardust. Saliba got hurt. Xhaka was slow. Odegaard was fatigued. And Jesus gave them exactly zero finish in the final third after his good start. In the end, many of those guys choked down the stretch.
