    Went to a Rockland Boulders game last summer, which is a low level independent team in my area and the only baseball to watch live anywhere near my house during the pandemic. There was one player who I wished I saved his name, but he was like a head taller than the other players and looked like a high school senior playing on a junior high team. Putting the ball wherever he wanted turning routine singles into doubles. We googled his name and turns out he had years of AA and AAA experience and had suffered an injury while up in spring training with the Rays MLB club. It was amazing to see this AAA player who only touched MLB in Spring training and see how much better he was than these lower level pros.

      I also go see the Rockland Boulders, or the NJ Jackals in the same league. My biggest takeaway is that, just about every game I see, there is a defensive play, maybe a hot shot to the shortstop, that is missed. But these teams are better than the local college teams I also see.

    I remember going to a low A ball game in Florida with a few of my college teammates. We were amazed at the number of mistakes. There were infield dropped pop ups, multiple pick offs, and plays many of us felt we could have made better. Most of them looked like kids. Then all of a sudden a dude hit a 400+ foot bomb and the next pitcher was chucking 98. They’re drafted for a reason.

    Very informative video. Growing up playing baseball every year of my life from the time I was 3 until I was 18, I always dreamed of playing professionally. Unfortunately, I never even played college ball😂 (should have applied myself more) it’s still nice to get a sense of just how tough the competition would have been for each league. I’m now teaching/assistant coaching for a small high school, and I’m loving every second of it! They say the best coaches weren’t always the best players 👀 we’ll see where it goes!

    I would love to see a similar video on the differences between the Japanese professional league (NBP) and MBL. I've been watching a really REALLY good baseball anime called Ace of Diamond. Even though it isn't translated correctly in parts (probably to not confuse people who actually follow baseball), there seems to be some difference in "cleanup" theory in Japan vs more domestic US baseball that I'd love to learn about. In Japan, it seems the 3rd batter is considered the cleanup, and I'd love to know why that is.

    I remember seeing a low A affiliate game between Daytona and Palm Beach 2 years ago. What I took from that was, 1) the players were young (all in their early 20s at the oldest), 2) the players were still growing into their bodies (not quite physically developed yet to be in MLB), 3) hitters lacked enough power to be in MLB at that time, 4) pitchers could throw it low 90s (maybe 95), but it's hard to make it to MLB if you can't reach 100 on occasion. The pitchers also seemed to struggle with command.

    From my limited experience, the difference is consistency. You have guys throwing upper 90s in Low A, but they can’t pitch. They hit it 500 feet, but rarely.
    Guys in the upper levels paint the black and square the ball up at a much higher rate than those at the lower levels, but the potential skill level is the same.

    I like that your perspective applies to other sports too. Raw, individual talent vs skill. Take soccer for example. Lower level guys also have amazing talent, but lack clean consistent execution, vision, the ability to read the game, and adjust to the opponent. That’s what separates amateurs/semi pro from the guys that do it for a living.

  • @racinnut77
    @racinnut77 Před 3 lety +1

    Many years ago I, along with a few of my teammates (we played on an adult amateur team for ex-college or equivalent level players) attended a Kane County Cougars game. Kane County is in the Midwest league which was Low A. The starting pitcher for Kane County was a big left hander. He didn't throw very hard but he made up for it by having terrible control. The catcher for Kane County was Charles Johnson who would go on to play in the Majors (even an untrained eye could see he was best player on the field that night). It was clear to tell Johnson was getting very frustrated catching this guy. His pitches were either nowhere near the strike zone or, if they were, got clobbered. The consensus among us was the pitcher wouldn't have been good enough to play in our league and we wondered how in the world he ever got drafted.

    • @GeraldM_inNC
      @GeraldM_inNC Před 3 lety

      In reference to what you said about an untrained eye finding it easy to spot a minor league player destined to have a career in the majors -- THAT was my #1 impression from the one game I attended. There were two players, a pitcher and a catcher, who were so far above the level of all the other players on either team that I never forgot their names. Both went on to have fine careers in the majors.

  • @ms.felonystrutter2472

    Congratulations on your career and love your channel. I am going to follow baseball truly for the first time since 1989. Rookie Ball, A, AA, AAA, MLB....I'm curious how much the population whittles down. Playing as a teenager and watching a college game of Div 3 ballplayers who had no chance at going pro, the difference was really night and day, playing even at a D3 level is still pretty hard for the average person!

    What this video left out is the pitching velocity of minor compared to MLB. Velo lives in the MLB. 90% of the pitchers that throw 95 are in MLB so this changes the whole dynamic. Minor league hitters are essentially living in a dream world, this is how Tyler Nevin bats 340 in AAA and 120 in MLB. This is how top prospect superstars come to MLB and struggle bigtime for months or more- its the velo. Torkelson had a 900 OPS at every level of minors but 600 at MLB , having to guess 95 in order to hit 95. No guessers in MLB or they get their doors blown off.

    You touched on this, but get too deep on it. What do you think lower levels of minor league ball will look like with the realignment of minor leagues this year. They've eliminated Rookie (sort of) and short season A. Entry point for most players appears to be Low-A now. Our local community is a little concerned because our local minor league club is going from High-A to Low-A. In the past with High-A, many of the players had been through Rookie or short season and even Low-A before getting to our team. With that the talent was, still developing, but fairly solid. The concern now - is the talent is going to be significantly lower with the team at Low-A. Quality of baseball may not be as high and interest in the club may fade. Have yo done or thought about any analysis on what professional baseball will look like under the new minor league structure?

    Matt, do you ever think that baseball's minor league system will ever become obsolete? I mean, football doesn't really have such a system , and they have more players on their rosters. Basketball does have a minor league, but its populated by guys who have next to no chance of ever making it to the NBA.

    Why do you think no baseball team since the Yankees have won back to back? There’s been some super good teams in the past years but none of them repeat.

      My guess is the baseball season is so long for the World Series champion. It could wear down their pitching staff some for the next year. Wear and tear could explain why teams in other sports don't repeat either.

    I think the best way to see the difference between a Major League player and all the rest of us is to watch a pitcher hit. A Major League pitcher is Major League in pitching, but not a Major League hitter. They are a world class athlete, but usually just an amateur hitter. Some of them were even the best hitters on their high school team, but when you see them hit vs. Major League pitching, you're watching a good high school player vs. a Major Leaguer, and the results are usually pretty ugly. Even the best hitting pitchers look pretty bad when you compare them to even the worst hitters who are position players. After all, it's a rare pitcher who can even hit .200.

    If the talent in major league middle inning relief is "off the charts", then the skill level in the minors must be abysmal. I see too many middle relievers and even spot starters that cannot throw strikes. The deep counts and the 4 walk per nine inning averages are plentiful (that is part of ther reason the games are so long and drawn out) and it is compounded because they then lay the ball in and it gets hammered. Hello 5 plus ERAs.

    Can an elite major ever get called down? I mean a 1st round drafter or highest paid player. Let's say Manny Machado for example. Guy just signed a $30 million contract. He's a stud on the field, yada yada. Say he does amazing this upcoming season, but then next season he starts slipping, and season after he completely sucks. Can he get downgraded to Padres minor team instead of being traded? Just curious if the high paying players still need to keep their game tip top.

    The bottom line of this video is major leagues have talent (?) and skill (?) and minoe leagues have less (?) No clue. The difference between majors and minors and guys who get there is "mindfulness" Old school used to call it "face" (except 95% of scouts and coaches had no idea what that was)
    Any guy who really wants to play baseball, is willing to work to be in top physical shape and is "mindful" will make the majors. What is mindful?
    It is self aware and intelligent. I can tell every year in August who will win the WS, whatever their record is, because every player on the field and the manager knows the play every pitch and executes on the play every time the ball is put in play. That means things like when a ball is hit to right field the left fielder runs, he doesn't stand there looking, he runs to be able to back up third and be the backup to the backup at second.
    It is players who are constantly evaluating themselves and taking and asking for advice.
    There is the odd guy who has natural athletic ability and is intelligent but is not "mindful" This is the secret sauce and why the Yankees and Dodgers are not playing for the WS every year.

    • @RRaquello
      @RRaquello Před 3 lety

      You still have to have exceptional physical ability. I'd bet there are plenty of guys out there who tried just as hard and were just as smart and dedicated to the game as anyone who made the Major Leagues, but who never got past high school because they didn't have the physical ability to get further than they did. It could be anything from eyesight to speed to size to lack of inherent physical strength. Effort can only get you so far. Maybe a good high school player can raise his level, through extreme effort, to get to single A ball, but extra effort alone won't make him a major leaguer. It can only bring you up a certain amount if you're not born with the natural physical ability.

    • @michaelmilne9914
      @michaelmilne9914 Před 3 lety

      @@RRaquello I will give you eyesight, the rest is mindful, anyone can be muscular if they start working at it from young - again that is mindfulness, what do I want? There is another variant, that I added to mindfulness, that is a "born with" that is intelligence. But it can be overcome with hard mindfulness work - very few, but there are some, ML players who are dumb.

    • @RRaquello
      @RRaquello Před 3 lety

      @@michaelmilne9914
      But there still are physical limitations. For example, I knew a guy, when he was older, who claimed that he was a great basketball player when he was in high school. I don't know, because I never saw him play, but let's say it was true. He was a great high school basketball player. Then he says to me, "I could have been as good as Michael Jordan, if I tried harder and took it more seriously, but I just wanted to have a good time."
      Now, I don't care how hard this guy tried, he was never going to be Michael Jordan, because Jordan had supreme physical ability beyond his mental ability, and no amount of hard work is going to make up for that physical ability one guy has and another guy doesn't. Or take two baseball players, both great players. Say Mickey Mantle and Luis Aparicio. Aparicio isn't going to be Mickey Mantle no matter how he tries just because the differences in physical ability, so he plays the game according to the physical attributes he has. He's not going to hit 500 home runs, but he's going to steal 500 bases. We can only do our best according to the physical bodies we're given. You can't say, "Well, anybody could be a Major League player if he tries hard enough and has the right mind set" because very, very few people have the physical attributes necessary to be even a single-A level minor leaguer.

    • @michaelmilne9914
      @michaelmilne9914 Před 3 lety

      @@RRaquello Sorry your friend was not going to be Michael Jordan because Michael Jordan is extremely intelligent AND mindful by working hard.
