- The South African Woman Who Built the First Luxury Hotel in the Slums is a video about Mrs. Annette Skaap who is an Entrepreneur who built a Luxury Boutique Hotel in Khayelitsha which is one of the biggest slums in the world. She did this in a bid to change the narrative about Khayelitsha in Cape Town, South Africa. I sat down with her to share her story and why she decided to take on this massive task. Really proud of Annette. The South African township landscape is a goldmine of economic opportunities for indigenous locals. The township was Apartheid's design and biggest weapon against black social and economic progress, and we used it as a counter-weapon against them by building social cohesion which gave rise to the freedom struggle across the whole country. It's about time we started using it for our economic advancement as well. Sis Annette is carrying the torch for our generation. The solution to the overwhelming crime in the Townships is bringing economic opportunities home.
Thanks Tayo for this feature.
👊👏
Definitely!!!
Thanks for watching. Appreciate your comment!
Very intriguing comment.
Invest on the Townships has the biggest Buying power in South Africa Africa Townships Are the heart of South Africa economy
Tayo you are one of a kind thank you maan bhuti.....Khayelitsha is not a slum we have everything here. From parks to Library, stadium, clinics, schools, hospital, police station, court, malls, electricity running water drinkable at that. The list is endless all I can say you find everything you want with out going to town
I love her, when she said ' I have been exposed to luxury and opulence and I thought why not bring it home', damn just profound.
South africa 🇿🇦 with interior design is the best in the world 🌎
Even their mansions interior and exterior design, landscape they are top notch some developed country don't even come close they have very talented architects
I’m Black American and I’m so proud of our sister in the Motherland for building up her community when others had given up on it. This is so inspirational. I will absolutely book a stay at her hotel when I visit. This is absolutely something worth investing in! Keep it up, sis. May the Most High continue to bless you. ❤
I'm an so proud of this woman . We need more people like her building up the community. This is a great opportunity for the people.
This are the South African that I know, the most hard working people you will ever meet around
Townships in South Africa are not slums. One famous youtuber once said Soweto is the biggest slum in Africa, this after visiting Vilakazi Street, Diepkloof, Pimville and Maponya Mall. We know what some slums look like in other countries and they know too but that doesn't stop them calling our townships slums. I wish the drone images were zoomed more so people could see the real picture.

The Origin of Khayelitsha. The name is of Xhosa origin and means 'new home'. She is doing the name and her people justice, by investing where it is needed the most, and that is Home. Continue to inspire, shine and spark Tayo, another blessed video.
Townships are not slums. Many townships are same as any other suburbs. The difference between township and suburbs is that townshourips were designed for Blacks, and Coloured people, and suburbs were for whites and Indians only. In government terminology, when a new suburb is buid, including gated communities, they refer it as township is established. The planning is the same. In townships,, especially in Gauteng, there are millionairs staying there. Information settlement is when people build shacks next to a townships mostly for work opportunities. Slums are delapidated areas, mostly informational areas. Thank for your informative video.

This is beautiful and I'm inspired 😍. There is a new trend I've been seeing around South African townships and some villages. People are now building beautiful Guesthouses and hotels in Townships and I'm so excited to see our people bringing beauty and glamour to our neighbourhoods ❤ In 2019 my husband and I attended a wedding at a village in Venda, Limpopo. We got to stay at a new and first guesthouse in that village. The beauty, good service, and vision that the owner had were so amazing. As Africans, we are capable of great things and we are the main target market. So why not bring these things home to our people 🙌

Well done to her...Khayelitsha is most probably one of the fastest developing neighborhoods in CT. Our firm has for years been involved in construction of some of the infrastructure buildings in Harare Square and Kuyasa including Harare and Kuyasa Libraries, Live-Work Units, Environmental Health Organization (EHO) offices and Masibambane Community Hall

South African townships are more like hidden gems instead of slums, what apartheid has taught us people of colour is to invest back into our homes and expand them just like this lady but we need more investments running in them as some of them can be thriving new cities
True!
@@TayoAinaFilms It would help if you could change the term slum, townships are not slums
This is the best part of Khayelitsha, I owned a house in Mandalay, so I traveled through the neighboring town. I'm proud of this lady.
As South afircan we don't have a proper understanding of the word slum Tayo explain to us what is a slum. Khayelitsha it's a township not a slum .

In the USA ,we live in public housing or the project. It was the best place ever, we were so close to our neighbors and it was made up of good family’s. That was a long time ago. But now the GHetto or project in the USA many are poorly designed and cheaply built, often associated with crime. Slums, GHetto, project, It’s so sad if you are poor and can’t move out to better schools, and neighborhoods to raise your children 👧 in a safe environment.

I agree with you, it's clean. It could be better but we know slums, that's not a slum.
Thats because its not really a slum.
This video was very inspiring! I love seeing my black South Africans going back to the townships and villages to harness the economic potential of these areas. We need more black entrepreneurs in the townships and villages who are passionate about not only the economic development of the townships/villages, but the social development as well. The government has various funding options available for SMEs, but, unfortunately, due to corruption, nepotism and unnecessary bureaucratic processes, these funding options never reach the people who need it and deserve it the most.
I'm really proud of you Annette! Continue striving, and best of luck to you and your beautiful boutique hotel!

I have been to Kayelitsha it's definitely not a slum...I have been to two of their clubs: Kwa-Ace & Rands...great vibes all the way...Kayelitsha is basically "e-kasi" which means the "hood". There is definitely a high crime rate just like neighbouring Gugulethu...but trust me this place isn't a slum more like a lower to lower-middle income township. I have been in actual slums in SouthAfrica, Mozambique & Swaziland....this place is developing in its own unique way and doesn't qualify as a slum.

WOW that's brilliant, and great to see locals with strong economic vision / endeavour, bring such business ventures to fruition. Even through the storm, of finding it most difficult to raise capital, derived from historical financial institution's "bias" - [intentional discriminatory / oppressive] practices, yet you never wavered / allowed thoss nay sayers to steal your dream. Annette well done for staying on course with all your projects, and best wishes for those soon to come on stream, as I'm sure it couldn't have been an easy journey at all. Your story is such an inspiration, and I'm always especially even more empowered, when I can see Black & people of colour from across the globe, following their creativity calling to change the negative narrative, by just going for it; particularly those who proactively aspire to transform / change their local economies' trajectory, ultimately creating employment and progression opportunities for their home town.
