    I have been asked about pipe inserts, I had an email from John Guest Technical dept today to confirm that inserts are not required on cold water services but recommended they be fitted on hot water services. So I will be adding tube inserts to the hot water joints, fortunately I made sure it was all accessible and not hidden away.

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Před 6 lety

      Iseeu Allgood, a few guys in the comments have mentioned the need for inserts to be used. I checked with John Guest and they have confirmed the above. The insert is placed into the end of the cut pipe to stiffen it, especially on hot water services as the pipe becomes more pliable with heat. Can get them for just under 50p each and fortunately I only need about 20 so under a tenner. 😃

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Sandy :D I'm guessing your house is less likely to be moving around much, so less vibration and risk, than in a van.
      You not building a spa deck on the roof, for the ultimate hot tub views ;D lol

    • @markusmack2732
      @markusmack2732 Před 6 lety

      i asked yesterday but after editing my message to include other questions i forgot to leave the question about inserts , The reason i asked was because im doing a van like Gregs but not up to date on latest materials , i used to own a loft conversion company and had a very bad experience caused by a plumber that didn't use inserts. days after completing the job one of the pushfit joints popped and caused severe damage to ceilings and rooms below. i also remember cold joints slightly leaking without inserts, im not a plumber .. maybe theres less pressure or heat in a camper system so it wont be a problem .
      dunno ??
      the other thing got me thinking was that the inserts will make the pipe slighty more narrow at the connections , could that affect flow needed or pressure etc ?

    • @kjetilavset9503
      @kjetilavset9503 Před 6 lety

      @@markusmack2732 don't think the inserts will make any difference in the presure or flow, they are quite thin.
      In a camper/boat the water pump is often turned off when the water is not in use and a leak will therefore not lead to a bigg spill.

    • @clan3683
      @clan3683 Před 6 lety +1

      Hi regards the inserts on the blue pipe you should put inserts on all your fittings the reason for this isn’t to just strengthen the pipe it’s there to stop the pipe from cutting the O ring in the fitting. when you cut the pipe with your pipe splice it will have sharp edges the insert will give it rounded edges. you might get away with not putting inserts in several times but one day you will find the pipe will cut the O ring in the fitting and leak and if the fittings in a awkward place it could make it very hard work. 😉

    I find its handy to have an isolator between the filter and the pump. That way you can clear the filter without having to turn off the pump and empty the accumulator by turning on a tap. It saves water and effort when servicing. Videos are great by the way, really appreciate the effort put in.

    • @jespero94

      This pump has inbuild checkvalve so water will not flow backwards when you clean the filter. If your pump does not have this valve you can install one just after the pump to prevent water from flowing backwards :)

    Hi Greg,
    I fitted the SHURflo 4009 water pump, 11LPM. This pump has an internal bypass that removes the need for an external pressure accumulator. One less fitting that can fail.
    I went with flexible food quality water hose, brass fittings and circular clamps - this is probably considered an older, redundant technology but I used it simply for the better bend radius of the hose, much fewer elbows and shorter runs. With quality fittings, probably runs to the same price as John Guest system. Time will tell for realiability.
    Thanks for you excellent presentations.

      I've got my pump mounted under the sink and you do hear a low puttputtputt, but definately not annoying as the water flow sound into the sink pretty well drowns it out. I didn't bother to box it in with soundproofing.
      I did have a small leak in a joint and the pump alerted me to it by cutting in and out (putt...15sec...putt). With the pressure accumulator you may not get this leak warning.

      Thank you for the info Norman. I did quite a bit of searching, and couldn't find a SHURflo 4009 model, but did find 4008. After a bit more searching, I went for the Aqua King 2 version as the spec seemed really good for the price. It's 11Litres per minute, 30psi, and has an adjustable internal bypass to remove the need for an accumulator.

    Another excellent video, as always. Thank you. May I suggest a foot operated switch for the sink. A pedal mounted to the floor, similar to those used on sewing machines. Many advantages to this. Switch on tap not needed, handsfree operation, more hygenic, less water spilt around base of the tap, massive saving in overall water usage ! I have the same Whale submersible pump. It's been under water now for nearly 4 years. Amazingly reliable.

    • @GregVirgoe

    Just recently found your channel while researching during my own van conversion. The switch change on your tap sums up your approach, you don't take the cheap the easy or the quick way, just the correct way. Your attention to detail and quality of workmanship put factory builds in the shade with the added bonus that you have your van the way you want, not what someone else thinks you should want. I tell you what your videos are absolutely brilliant and I love the fact you put everything in the description links. Later on this year me and my girlfriend are hoping to do our own van conversion was going to pay some people to do the majority of the work but actually watching your videos with how well you put everything together and all the information you give I actually feel like some of the stuff I was going to pay people to do I could probably take on myself so just want to say thank you for your great videos

    Fantastic video again! I love the detail and methodical thought process! I would have liked to see how you drilled the hole in the floor to bring up the tubes from the water tank though; and most importantly how you'd re-seal the floor to prevent water and other elements from the underside going into the cabin. Regardless, GREAT WORK GREG! KEEP IT UP M8!

      There is video of me cutting a hole in the Truma install video out very soon. simply just a case of going through all the layers with a Bi-Metal holes saw from top to bottom until you are through the lot, paint the raw edges and seal up with sikaflex and spray underneath with waxoyl for added protection.

    Greg, your videos are phenomenal, by far one of the best CZcamsrs out there with in depth, fascinating, descriptive videos that make your series an education and a pleasure to watch.
    Youve inspired me at some point not only to go ahead with a conversion when I have the means, but also to undertake some trade study, be it basics in electrics, carpentry, and other relevant areas to better clue myself up on this stuff.
    I love the scientific aspects you put in the videos too, from considerations of contamination, to physics phenomena which not only enlighten from a scientific perspective but also from a functional standpoint (like limiting pressure inside the system.)
    I always learn a lot from your videos, and what an amazing series, sad to see it nearing its end but I imagine you have made a huge difference to a substantial community interested in undertaking a conversion and self installations, at least you have to me.
