Probably because Twitter is now inhabited by a bunch of shitheads who think if they whine loud enough about life they can actually bring about social change. The worst part is that in some cases they can and they use this power and influence to just make life hard for those disagree with them. All the negativity, hate and thought policing that happens on twitter now is exactly why Stephen left it for as long as he did.

Stephen fry is endlessly and effortlessly; funny, rational, humble, charming, intelligent and very well educated. An overall gem, it's a pleasure watching and listening to him speak.

the event that caused it this time was a massive amount of backlash from SJW's calling him a sexist for referring to a woman that designs costumes and whatnot for television and films as a "bag lady".
They completely ignored the fact that 1) they are friends 2) they teased each-other publicly over twitter fairly often 3) the woman said they had both called each-other worse and that it was fine.
