  • I don't know romance but I do know movies and Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris is an incredible love story told through its camera movement and shot composition. This is the story of Gil Pender: his affairs, time travel, and finding his true love.
This video will spoil the movie.

I loved when his ex fiancée said she would hate walking in the rain and getting wet while Gabrielle said she didn't mind getting wet.

Last time I went to Paris I sat on some stairs to rest from so much walking and took a picture sitting there. My girlfriend later noticed that it was the stairs where Gil would be picked up at midnight. This happened after I had seen the film and I had not realized that it was the exact same spot. That was really cool !!!!

I featured those stairs in my video on YT, : Wonderful backstreets of Paris : This is a film I've watched many times. I loved Adreana. Gil also was perfectly cast. Tony Talking The Talk

My favorite movie of all time…. Seen it like a hundred times, don’t get tired of it, and each time I can see more and more the genius and interconnections in so many different ways between characters, time, place, art, history, romance, dialogue, wittiness… it’s just an incredible feat to pull off and this film does it all. The only thing though is how some characters just disappear completely towards the end like Gil’s fiancé and her parents… I mean did they go back to the US? Did they have a huge argument at the hotel… etc. regardless, it’s a well put together film. Woody Allen tried the same with From Rome with Love film and it fell flat on its face. Midnight in Paris just clicks in so many amazing ways.

Thanks for this. This is probably my favorite movie of all time. I'm a painter (and love late 19th-century Parisian art!) so I picked up some of these things already, but you went even deeper! Loved it.

Someone commented elsewhere on utube, that in the intro scenes, Woody Allen used some usual scenes of Paris, perhaps stock videos from travel companies..but that's just the point. The movie becomes magical; superb, witty, poignant, historically detailed script, as only Woody can, with excellent actors and music, enveloped me utterly. 👍💐🌷🌌

As a writer I loved this movie. As someone who has worked in film crew, I appreciated the craft of this movie. But you nailed the exact visual language that went into it.
Stuff like this reminds me why I should stick to writing. The nuances of visual language just aren't clear to me. If I ever get a script going, maybe you could direct.

The major players in this film each had their own notion of what were the good old days, their Golden Age. Owen Wilson delivered Woody Allen quips in Woody Allen style. In the end, he's with the girl that could have been Mia Farrow's stunt double, telling me Woody's Golden Age was spent with Mia Farrow.

I think Woody Allen’s latest movies are his most wonderful - Midnight in Paris, Cafe Society, Blue Jasmine and Vicky, Christina, Barcelona. Vicky Christina, Barcelona was historical, with these crazy characters doing ridiculous things, while the narrator has the difficult job of explaining everything in this droll manner, as if it’s all just a normal turn of events.
Even Whatever Works was great, The lead character is this insufferable egomaniac who probably most people could never abide living with. In fact, the mother of the young girl he marries faints when she discovers her daughter is living in this rundown apartment with this crazy old man.
There is something very “clean” about all these productions.

Been watching Allen's films on release all my adolescent and adult life. When I saw Midnight in Paris with my then girlfriend was blown away. It seems superficially... superficial: soppy, romantic, easy on the eye, funny. But , it is, as you point out, a crafted rumination on nostalgia, ageing and true romantic love. Brilliant scene analysis. Thank you, man. And you're correct. Paris is not a lovely town. It's noisy, busy and full of overpriced joints with rude waiters.
