    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Isaac (Woody Allen) breaks up with Tracy (Mariel Hemingway).
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    On the heels of Annie Hall, the Oscar-winning romantic comedy that rocketed Woody Allen to the front ranks of American filmmakers, Manhattan continued Allen's romantic obsessions in a slightly darker, more pessimistic vein. Allen stars as Isaac Davis, a TV comedy writer sick of the pap he is forced to churn out and harboring dreams of being the great American novelist. His love life is in barbed-wire territory: he is tormented by his second ex-wife Jill (Meryl Streep), a lesbian who has written a tell-all book about their marriage, and he is dating teenager Tracy (Mariel Hemingway), to whom he refuses to commit, and keeps hinting that a breakup may be imminent. Isaac's disillusioned (and married) best friend Yale (Michael Murphy) has begun an affair with the cerebral writer Mary Wilke (Diane Keaton). While Isaac makes a last minute, sink-or-swim decision to quit his job and devote all of his time to book writing, and neurotically moans about what the lack of a full time job will do to him ("My parents won't have as good of a seat in the synagogue," he moans. "They'll be far away from God... away from the action") Yale is crippled by his lack of resolve, as indicated by his inability to leave his wife Emily (Anne Byrne). Meanwhile, Isaac and Mary begin to fall for one another. Tracy then tells Isaac the basic truth that none of his hung-up friends and past lovers fully realizes: "You have to have a little more faith in people." Manhattan is both a seriocomic dissection of perpetually dissatisfied New Yorkers and an ode to the city itself, filmed in glorious black-and-white by ace cinematographer Gordon Willis, and set to a score of rhapsodic George Gershwin music.

Number 2, those were hook-ups and fan-worship: this girl, by contrast, was seduced into a relationship (which prevented her from forming other, more suitable relationships while she was in it). And Number 3, a lot of rock groups were formed by young men not that far apart in age, if at all (check out the ages of the Beach Boys in their first few albums) from the groupies. The scenario presented in *Manhattan* is very different.

    When I was 42 I dated a 28 year old. It felt ridiculous and I kept her at arm's length. She wanted me to open to more intimacy but I wouldn't so she broke up with me. Really, it was more like I broke up with her. She was beautiful but it felt wrong. Emotionally, she was too young and I felt bad about it, even though she was 10 years over the age of consent.
    I don't know that 42 and 28 is necessarily too far apart in age. Probably depends on the people. She was a lovely person, really smart, with many wonderful qualities. But there wasn't an adult connection. I've dated women who were 11 or 12 years younger and it didn't feel that way. Somehow, in this case, 14 years was too much, and I never experienced a larger age difference.
    Having said all of that, 42 and 17 seems ridiculous. How could that not feel like dating a child? Hemmingway plays the role like someone older. Perhaps a 25 or 28 year old. But the reality of a 17 year old is very different. Someone that age really is a child. How could the man not feel that he was in a father role and the young woman not feel like she's playing the part of a daughter?

    The whole idea that this beautiful girl is "hung up" on the Woody Allen character is a laugh. Girl, he is 42 years old and you are 17. This is a real ego-booster for the old guy, who must think he is being kind to Tracy with his breakup speech. He says he wants for her best welfare, but he is moving on to a bigger and better catch: the Diane Keaton character. There is some moral satisfaction at the end of the movie when she leaves for Europe and he fails to convince her to stay with him. We're talking about Isaac Davis, not Woody Allen.

I certainly know what a movie is and I know that most of them (but not all) are works of fiction. Woody Allen can write ANYTHING he wants, and I would be the first to recognize him as a writer of scripts. My comment is about the premise, which is laughable. Diane Keaton and Mia Farrow both initiated their romantic relationships with Allen. The character of Tracy in Manhattan is based on Stacey Nelkin, Allen's attractive teenage then-girlfriend. For many years, his life was a nonstop smorgasbord of high-quality women.

    • @rr7firefly
      @rr7firefly Před 6 lety +4

      My original comment was about the character in the movie, and how Allen saw himself as an irresistible charmer with shy or insecure women. I have to admit that up until 10 years ago I was an admirer of his work. But I (and other discerning moviegoers) do not think he has stayed true to producing quality work. The newer stories are uninspired and hackneyed, especially in light of his insistence to make one movie a year. When I was a sophomore in high school I had a creative writing class. It changed my life. Among the many memorable moments was when the teacher showed us a picture of Michelangelo’s ”David”. I’ll never forget what he said to the class: “if you have an issue with (looking at) the genitals, that’s your problem.” And I feel the same way about this. If you have an issue watching this because of whatever prurient sexuality you read into it, that’s your problem. This isn’t vulgar. This is (emotionally) naked humanity.

    Timothy Chalamet brought me here . I was in College when this came out . Well horndog sexual revolution years . I thought “cool “ . Could I have a young lover when I reach maturity years ? Well . First of all it would have been 18 or older . I respected the law and the axiom , “ 16 will get you 20 “ even after I turned 18 . When I was 17 an attractive physically matured 12 year old girl . had a huge crush on me . I declined . I wouldn’t even kiss her . As far as this movie is concerned , we have learned far more about Woody Allen since and it is not good . Anyway in retrospect I find this film pretentious and what is nauseating is the way he makes disparaging remarks about her age while at the same time maintaining a romantic and sexual relationship with her . A total lack of respect. The character is an absolute creep and so are you Mr. Konigsberg in real life .
