Sound for Video Session: Edit/Mix Room Tour 2018

- After several requests and despite my prior objections, this week’s episode is a virtual tour of my mix/edit room. This is where I edit all of my videos, edit and mix the sound for these videos, and generally work. I hesitated to do this because I don’t want anyone to think that you have to have expensive tools to edit and mix good sound for video. You can start with a basic computer and set of headphones. Once you’re getting paid to mix and edit sound for video, then it generally makes sense to invest in some tools that will help you get the job done more efficiently.
Please consider my sound for film classes available over at school.learnlightandsound.com

I have watched hundreds of your videos, and still haven't figured out how you can keep me engaged for 34 minutes just talking about stuff. If you know, please share. 👍
When nerds start talking about things they love, it can be compelling! :)
You all prolly dont give a damn but does any of you know a tool to log back into an Instagram account??
I was dumb forgot the password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me.
@Rodney Julian instablaster ;)
@Camilo Ariel Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
@Camilo Ariel It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much you really help me out !
I love all of your videos! The BMPCC4K looks great.
Thanks Sae.
I've added this vid to the "recommended viewing" section in our membership newsletter- at the access TV station I manage. keep 'em coming Curtis.
Thanks Leo!
Really enjoyed the studio tour. It's nice to see watch and see what is used by professionals. Thanks for sharing Curtis.
👍
It never fails. I watch one of your videos, in this case two, and they cover just what i'm needing. Ordered a Furman. Then watched the dialogue workflow video from 2015. Perfect for a new project I'm planning. Thank you
Thanks Ray, so glad they helped!
Great studio!! Love your corner treatment!!!
Thanks 👍🏻
Very very cool. Thankyou!
Thanks!
Really interesting Curtis, thanks!
you bet!
Thomann, Germany has the Russian made Oktava MK 012. You can buy them single or as a matched pair with either cardioid capsules, or cardioid and omnidirectional capsules, or cardioid, omni and hypercardioid capsules. Prices between 172 euro (about $195) for one cardioid and 539 euro ($609) for a pair with three sets of capsules. And you can get them in grey or black. Extra capsules are also available at 80 euro a piece (cardioid) or 86 euro (omni or hyper).
Thanks Lau, that's where I bought my copy and had it shipped to the US.
Always enjoyable...
Thanks Nathan!
Curtis Judd , sir I really admire your work, and would love to try my hand at Voice over...unfortunately I’m handicapped...I’m from Maine...lol. There is a little book sold there called “How to talk Yankee”, in the foreword the author says I knew a fella named Brewer, talked like Machine Gun...needless to say I knew both the Author and the Illustrator. If you have ever heard a John F. Kennedy Speech, you will have heard my particular dialect of Yankee, and in Maine you will run across several varieties depending on location.
To further complicate things I am an Expat living in the Philippines, retired but working toward starting a VLOG and Podcast....fixed income, so a slow process, plus shipping from the U.S. is expensive so I use Ocean Freight, half price but a 60 day event... Thanks for your work, as I said it is always a pleasure to get your take on equipment and methods. Take care and keep up the great work!
@@nathanbrewer6032 Best wishes on your voiceover work and vlog!
Thank you for all your insights and expertise! If I had only one kind suggestion (for whatever it’s worth) is you don’t have to apologize for anything or worry so much about the criticisms of others. Your demeanor is totally techie and very kind & friendly, your experience gives your insight all the validity it needs. Those factors speak louder than any words!
Thank you again! 🙏🌟
Thanks Dante. There is a tendency to get a little sensitive when we get critical comments. Really what it comes down to is that I want to make sure that those on a tight budget realize that they can still make great sound, even if they don't have expensive tools.
Curtis Judd Chris you are a really great guy! Thank you good sir! 🙏🌟
Wow, that's one hell of a ironed out shirt!
I am fashion unconscious. Please don’t expect better. 😉
Hi Curtis! Nice show-and-tell of your equipment. I was waiting for you to show the whole room, and talk abut the bass traps you have in the corner. I'm beginning the process of making my garage into a studio, and I'm looking for good value / price room treatment. Keep on truckin' buddy
Hey Chad, good to hear from you! Good point, the treatment is a big deal worth some more discussion. I worked with GIK Acoustics and had one of their acousticians design the treatment for my room. The kit and service came to about $2500 and works quite well.
Yes, your room treatment would make a good video! I;m a ways out before I'll be ready to treat the garage, but I'll be looking for effective yet afordable options. I may make bass traps using insulation made from blue jeans material, cut into 30" triangles and stacked, then sail cloth stretched over the corners of the room.
@@ChadWork1 Hey, I just remembered, we did touch on them a bit here: czcams.com/video/Bi9i5uRQTXc/video.html
If you can pull off the DIY approach, that'd be rad! Your pocketbook AND ears will thank you!
"Acoustician" - great word!
👍🏻
You can go Thunderbolt to Firewire. I currently have Thunderbolt 2 to Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 in a chain to my MacBook Pro. I'm pretty sure you can do that with Thunderbolt 3 as well. This is to attach my old but great sounding and reliable Mackie Blackbrid audio interface.
I still have to use FW out of my Sound Devices 744T, for example. I had a Thunderbolt 1 to FW adapter for my 2012 Mac Air, and recently discovered that Apple’s TB3 to TB2 adapter coupled to that TB1 to FW adapter lets me get either FW 400 or FW 800 into my 2017 iMac 5K. Apparently, TB2 is backwards compatible with TB1. However, even though the TB3 connector looks like USB-C, the adapter chain does not talk to a USB-C port, has to be TB3.
Check out the Merging Anubis...for the money it sounds amazing and can be run off batteries and has amazing pres and headphone amp. Nothing I’ve heard sounds better.
Thanks White Rock, will do. Definitely has a mysterious name!
I've been dreaming of a pair of Sennheiser headphones like that for a while. (Actually the HD-800 s, which aren't quite as expensive, but still too much. Apparently too much even for Thomann).
He too. 😉
That was a nice video to watch. I have a question regarding impedance choices for DT 770 PRO (32, 80 and 250 ohms). Which one did you have and is there any real significant difference between them?
Thanks Ali, yes, the 250 ohm model is for headphone amps that have a lot more output power, usually audiophile amps. If you're working with a portable device, better to opt for the 80 ohm or 32 ohm. The 32 ohm version is designed mainly for smartphones or other consumer electronics.
Which microphone did you use to record this video? A lav? The sound was surprisingly consistent, even when you were facing away from the camera.
Yes, Countryman B6 to Audio Limited A10 wireless to Sound Devices 633. The lav was hidden under the button placket of my shirt.
Curtis Judd would you mind explaining how did you attached it? Grate sound btw
@@santiagopaul7041 Hi, yes, like this: czcams.com/video/Hci0OTYmaY4/video.html
By the way have you ever tried Genelec "SAM" line of monitors? those are the ones that can be room corrected automatically with Genelec GLM software.
Hi Harri, I haven’t but would sure like to try them!
Look up to you Curtis
Thanks Javi.
Everybody looks up to tall men.
@@skakdosmer Hahaha!
Thanks! You mentioned an older model (?) of Oktava microphone. Have you tried any of the currently available and reasonably priced models?
Hi Dan, I don't know which is newer or older but apparently some of the Oktava mk-012 microphones are made in Russia and some are made in China. I have heard some people say that the Russian made models sound better and are more consistent from copy to copy. This is all hearsay and not based on my own tests. Not saying that the people that said it are wrong, just that I have not tested this hypothesis myself.
In one of your public videos and also in a paid course you mentioned Audiotechnica AT4053b as your favourite mic for indoor dialog recording. Is it still? And do you still use RodeLink? Do you think it is just crap compared to A10? Is digital wireless system reliable at all times? What analogue wireless system would you recommend these days?
Hi Wojtek, I still own the AT4053b and it is still a very good mic. However, the Schoeps and Sennheiser (both of which are at least twice the price of the AT) get more use in my current work. I would say that for the price, I have not found a better indoor boom mic for dialogue than the AT (at the same price).
Hi Curtis, I'm considering getting an Imac what would you recommend in the event I can't get something like your Imac Pro, would any Macbook Pro give the same results?
With sound for film, a Macbook Pro would do the job in 99.9999% of cases. For multiple streams of 4K+ video, that's where the bigger systems like the iMac Pro become a lot more convenient and easier to work with.
I think your work studio is just fine. There are allot of studios that are way more, but not really better than yours. My system is very modest, but I am ready for my voice over work, podcast is questionable at this point. But your presentations are honest, and I have no problems with this video. Very nice setup. Mine is easy. Soundcraft Signature 12 mixer, AKG P120 Mic, and Emotiva Airmotiv 6s Monitors powered, and Emotiva Big DAC and Tascam DA-40 feeding my Canon SL-2. There, my whole setup. Easy huh? Keep up the great work Curtis. I want to work like yours. Oh yeah, a Win10 Notebook i7 processor with Ableton10 and Audacity. Still simple. I like Simple.
Thanks Vincent and best wishes on your voice over and podcast work!
It is ironic that You mentioned ability to repair gear and show a Mac 30 seconds later.
Hahaha! Good point! They can be repaired, just not by most of us. It takes a "Genius".
Just a question: Why is the angle between your 2 speakers far more than 60°?
Optimized for my listening position? Happy to take advice on how you would recommend positioning them.
@@curtisjudd For stereo recording I would place them according Rec.ITU-R BS1116-1 in a 60° arrangement.
@@Schwermetall Thanks. I'll look that up.
First. Hehe.
