      @@WesKriesel Hey Wes! Actually, yes. I'm close to buying the X-S10 body and I'm unsure about lens to get with it for hybrid shooting. I guess I'm asking a lot for one lens (maybe), but I do street photography, corporate headshots and company pics, company videos as well as CZcams (talking heads but also more and more vlogging, something for which I mostly use the GoPro Hero 8 ATM and is serving me very well) and my own creative projects. Is there anything in your opinion that could handle these requirements? The 15-45 comes as a kit, but I've heard it's a little flimsy. I'm thinking 16-55 or 16-80 for an all-rounder. What would you say? Cheers! (sorry to take your invitation for questions so literally!)

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  Před 2 lety +1

      It might be tough to find one perfect lens but if you are filming interviews or videos where people are the subject, I recommend the 18-55mm. It's been wonderful for eye AF. My next favorite lens is the 23mm F/2 lens - it's magical for street photography. A great portrait lens is the Viltrox 56mm F/1.4 lens, which is pretty affordable, around $325.

    Hi Wes. The way iso works is that it takes the light that comes in via the lens and the combo of shutter speed and aperture and then either does nothing to it at base iso or amplifies the signal at higher iso's before the image is saved to the sd card. The sensor is not senstive like film was. I think its good to explain this correctly so people understand exactly what happens with iso.

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  Před 2 měsíci

      Hi there! Thanks so much for adding to the discussion with your clear explanation of how ISO works in digital cameras. You're absolutely right-understanding that ISO amplifies the signal rather than making the sensor more sensitive, like film, is crucial for getting to grips with modern photography techniques. It's great to have community members like you who share their insights, helping everyone understand camera settings better.

    I just bought the X-S10, and have quickly realized I am in way over my head with this thing. What has me stumped are the dials changing depending on what mode you are in. So I decided to land on just one mode (manual) and get comfortable with that, first. I don’t like the dial on the left set up by default changing the ‘style’. I was hoping your video would address changing that dial, but to what? What would be the most helpful? White balance? Contrast? Obviously I have a lot to learn; your video is very helpful. Thank you!

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  Před 2 lety

      Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment/question. I agree that the left dial is not best left to adjust film simulations. If you are shooting in manual, think that your lenses probably have an aperture ring for easily adjusting the aperture, so I'd probably set the left dial to ISO. For me, I want to control the shutter speed with my right hand.

    Great vid thank you , you are very informative. I have the XS-10 with 18-55mm kit lens for video work, you recommend the 23mm f2 from Fuji , would that be better than Viltrox 23mm f1.4 for video.

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  Před 2 lety

      I have a Viltrox 56mm that is great, but I don't have any experience with the Viltrox 23mm. I think the Fuji 23mm F/2 is a special lens. I used it on my last two videos for the talking head portions and can recommend it. The 18-55 may do better in AF in low light or backlit situations but I love the Fuji 23mm.

    Thanks for the video!
    When I put to M Mode, the Exposure goes to the bottom and when I try the shutter speed, this doesn’t come up or go 0. So, my display is super dark and can’t see anything from the display on what I’m shooting. But on A mode, the lever moves and I see my subject from the display. What am I missing here?

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  Před 2 lety

      Try manual mode in a bright environment. Outside during the day, you should be able to get proper exposure with ISO 100 and 1/100 shutter speed. If that doesn't work, then let me know. Itfyou are in a dim environment, like indoors, it may be hard to see your display with otherwise "normal" exposure settings. You can also try moving your ISO temporarily up to 3200 or higher - if this fixes the problem, then your enivronment is too dark to see on the display.

If not, DISP/Back should take you one step back in the menu to the page you came from. Your second question - whether you are in A or S modes, you are giving the camera the control over ISO and the other element of the exposure triangle (shutter or aperture). So, you don't have control over ISO. I didn't test your specific question about max ISO, so I'm sorry but I can't shed light on that. Try it and see - if you have the camera. So if i can program the different wheels of the xs10 to get the same manual experience i could save a bit of money or more probably just buy one more lens ;)

It may not work in manual since your "exposure triangle" controls - ISO, SS and aperture - are the prime controls. But it's worth trying. I don't have the X-S10 anymore so can't test this. What kind of photography do you do?

    • @markmaldia368
      @markmaldia368 Před 4 měsíci

      Exposure comp. is not such a thing for pure manual mode ever on any camera. Exposure comp. only works in a semi automatic mode where the camera is making an adjustment for you. If you use manual mode with auto ISO (by definition that is no longer full manual mode) then you are in a semiautomatic mode. For the Fuji XS 10 the left dial can be programmed to be the exposure comp. dial. Sadly Fuji never updated the XS 10 so the front dial could be used for the exposure comp. which would be a more ergonomic and thus not make the user have to take the left hand off the lens/body to make adjustments.

      Look for a menu item that says " release shutter when no lens attached".

      Basically the camera was doesn't recognize that there's a lens attached, so you have to enable the ability to release the shutter when there's no lens based on its selection in the menu.

    Hey Wes, enjoying your videos. I have an XT3 and an XE1 for photography. The XT3 is a great but complex camera for sure but I enjoy using it. I also have Panasonic G7 and G85 which I use for various photography projects. However, video wise and for my CZcams vids I tend to use a DJI which is a wee beast and also an actual Panasonic video camera . I do want to work a little more on my videos and debating whether to just film on my XT3 on tripod or perhaps purchase the xs10 as a video cam to shoot the Fuji film sims due to the IBIS and ability to shoot handheld. I could be answering my own question here as I write this….and go with the XT3 for videos too BUT those new film sims…hmm. Any thoughts? I mean I really love the XE1 and if the XE4 had IBIS there would be no debate or even query in my mind. However, ……dilemma about Fuji’s most polarising cameras methinks.

      Sorry I missed replying to this earlier. Did you decide on this? I think the XT3 on a tripod would be just fine. I don't know that the X-S10 adds that much. Now, if you were to consider economics, you could sell the XT3 and the XE1 and pick up the X-S10. To me, it would be a simpler setup for both photo and video.

    Hello,
    I have 2 questions, specifically about manual mode, no-one never answers :
    1. As I see in your video, when setting ISO values, the screen doesn't show the histogram anymore nor the exposure measure. That's a pity because you usually want to impose first a shutter speed and an aperture and THEN adapt the ISO for a correct exposure. And then you can't because you are blind !
    2. To avoid this, you could set the ISO in Auto (while in manual mode). But unfortunately, even with a parameter adjusted by the camera, AEL is not available, nor the exposure compensation ! In this case you can't really choose precisely the exposure you want neither...
    Do you have a trick or advice for me please ?

      I just picked up an X-S10 so I will be able to test this and get back to you.

      Thanks you !
      I'd love to hear you have a solution because I really wanted to buy x-s10...
      My shooting process is to fix aperture and shutter speed, then fine tune the exposure with ISO (either auto + AEL + exposure compensation, or manually). But in both case I need help from camera's histogram and/or spot expo measure.
