The ownership disaster in St. Louis is why he ended up out of St. Louis in 2005. It’s nice to see that his number will be retired by the team.

    • @danh5810
      @danh5810 Před 3 lety +10

Yep. He was willing to take less money to stay in St. Louis for a long-term contract and the ownership said it wouldn't be able to sell with such a contract. This move alone set the Blues back years. Ironically, if you follow the trade tree this move eventually helped the Blues win the Stanley cup in 2019 so there's that.

To be fair, a lot of that isn't just on the owners, it's on Bettman. Blues owners were spending a decent amount, but the year long lockout killed it for them and they demanded out of the league.
The fact they told Pleau not to tender an offer to Pronger, let him walk as a free agent, was just ridiculous though, Thank goodness Pleau talked them into letting him sign Pronger and trade him rather than lose him for nothing. Led to us getting Binnington and the Cup.

Pronger's #44 was the only named jersey I had until I got an O'Rilley after the Cup win. He is my favorite player of all time, and I was PISSED when the Blues traded away Shanahan for him. Thank goodness old Brendan couldn't keep it in his pants.

Brendan Shanahan got traded out of St. Louis for Pronger because he slept with Craig Janney's wife, and the locker room despised him for it. They had to trade him because they couldn't really keep him after that, not because of his salary. This is common knowledge around St. Louis. Fortunately it worked out well for us and we got a HoF player for a HoF player.

He is also the reason I wore Bauer gloves, cause he did, with the Blues. It's a real shame. If he didn't get hurt, I seriously could have seen him playing another 5 years. He was still an elite defensemen at age 37 when he got hurt in 2011. Even if his offense dropped, you could still count on him to be a physical force and play his position really well. Kind of like what Chara has done as he has gotten older.

Alexander Grenon As he should be. Pronger was incredible player. As an Edmonton fan, the 2005/2006 finals run was magical and is something I will never forget, and Pronger was the main reason for that run. Edmonton fans were pissed off with Pronger and labeled him enemy number one for a few years after the trade, but today, most Edmonton fans have forgiven him, as they recognise that he was the best defenceman the Oilers have had since Paul coffey in the eighties. Edmonton will never have a D-man like him again. The end to his career? Tragic indeed. But Pronger lived by the sword, and I doubt he would have gone out any other way.

I loved Pronger in philly. He was sooo good. He really turned the blueline from passable to good. The 2010 flyers defense was underrated with pronger, carle, timonen, coburn being a top four. When he caught that stick in the eye it ended his career obviously but it also took the flyers out of being a contender

  • @6BfMV2

Loved Pronger. A borderline hard hitter, and not even the dirtiest player in HHOF imo... Playing in the mid and late '90s was absolute brutal: you could drive your opponents head into the boards, leaving him with a bleeding gash on his face and not even get a 2 minute penalty (hint: yes, that and a hit from behind started a big rivalry). Thank god, the rules have changed. Everywhere he got, the team got better. Nice video

Honestly, as a longtime Edmonton fan, there are no more hard feelings with Pronger. A decade of sewer dwelling does that to a fanbase, and the sewer dwelling had less to do with the Pronger trade and more to do with consistenly inept managment. Yes, Edmonton fans were shocked and pissed off with Pronger at first, but I feel it's really died down and pretty much forgotten now. Live and let live. All the fellow Oilers fans I talk to about Pronger admit that Pronger was the best defenceman the Oilers have had since Paul Coffey. I doubt the Oilers will ever get a D-man as mean, talented, and steady as Pronger was again. It's a testament to the leadership of Pronger that right after the season he made the finals with the Oilers, he went on to win the cup with the Ducks.

I remember the trade....Shanahan for Pronger. Talk about some enraged Blues fans!! My uncle taught me some 4-letter words that day!! Lemme tell you!! Holy smokes. ...
....But ironically enough, it was Pronger's hitting and defense that made him a fan favorite quickly in STL. All his points were a bonus.

+/- would be a nice addition. For some of us we really care if a D man was +2 or +32. A good D man on a bad team who has a +17 needs to be acknowledged.

plus/minus is a team stat basically. It has little to do with the individual player himself.

There's was so many times last season that players would bump into Binnington or crash his net and I would just think, "That likely doesn't happen if Pronger is out there." He might be known as a dirty player, but I'm sure his goaltenders didn't mind.

Why do players make trade requests public? Are they made privately and somebody in the organization leaks them, do they make them privately at first and then publicly because nothing gets done, or are they made public so their new team is that much better?
In any case, Sakic handled the Duschene (sp?) trade right. Held out until he got what he wanted.

I wouldn't wish harm on any human and I'll never forget the agonizing scream I heard when he got his eye slashed but if anyone had to have that injury, he made the case it should be him throughout his career. Recklessly disregarded other professionals and he got what was due to him
The league has been better without him
