13b Swapped FB Rx7 Review

  • My Thoughts on the 1985 Mazda Rx7 with a 1987 1.3L 13b engine swap, and 5 speed manual transmission:
    This is my car. My crowning achievement. The most valuable Item I own. I built this car. I bought it, blew the motor, and was devastated. Over a year later, with the help of online forums and willing friends, My Rx7 now has a 13b engine under the hood.
    The 13b Rotary engine is fuel injected, and makes around 145hp. It’s redline is 7800 rpm. That might not seem like a lot, but consider the fact that it’s a 1.3L, and weighs as much as a high school linebacker. Being so small, the engine fits behind the front axel, making the car handle even better.
    But what makes this car so great, is the fact that I built it. Without me, this car would be sitting in a junkyard rusting away. To drive a car you built, is a feeling like no other. After months of turning the key and only being disappointed, turning the key and hearing it fire up may be the best sound in the world. I can actually say “Built not bought” not ironically. This car qualifies as a build. Your plasti-dipped wheels and lowering springs, do not.
    What did I have to do for the swap? A lot. But it could be worse. The 13b is from a 1987 Mazda rx7. I needed a new engine mount and oil pan to fit the engine into the chassis. New fuel pump, radiator, oil cooler, and fuel lines were needed. The ECU got upgraded to a Mega squirt, along with the engine harness being significantly cut down. A full emissions delete was done to the engine for better efficiency. With a little spray of paint and break cleaner, the 13b works great.

    "build your dream car. because life is to short to not drive [it]"
    thanks for making this video, really needed to hear that right about now. i'm working on a 13b (S4) swap right now, and i keep watching rotary videos to keep my spirits up while i work on the build. money's super tight - a "rotary specialist" shop screwed me over by not refunding me $5k when they failed to do any work on my car, so i'm basically gonna try to DIY the build. (the engine is going into a non-rotary car, so the swap is a bit difficult)
    anyway, i hope the FB with 13b brings you many years of enjoyment, especially knowing that you made it happen! peace :D

      That sounds awesome! There were many long nights, nights of doubt, frustration, and anger. But when the 13b finally held an idle on it's own, it was insanely rewarding, by far one of my proudest achievements. I have a whole series on my channel called Rotary life, I'll link you to the episode where I drive it for the first time! czcams.com/video/bfdTxEQOVTM/video.html

    One of life's regrets (sort of). I bought a new 84 GS 12A instead of the first year GSL-SE 13B. However, I still own and drive it today (2021). She's mostly stock, beautiful and fun drive. Best part: Today she's worth more than I paid for her new and continuing to appreciate in value. Still, wish I had an original 13B...

    Just recently purchased a 1984 FB after my 1997 miata was destroyed in a car accident. I actually even ordered a set of diamond steelies before I stumbled on your channel lol. Sounds like our cars are going to be twins pretty soon! I'll definitely be keeping up with your channel a lot more from now on. Nice car!

    I miss my SA being powered by a 13B, I'm not a fan of the 6 port fuel injected engines, but am a huge fan of the OG 4 port carved 13Bs. The engine that came in my car was from a 76-78 cosmo and had a large street port making 154whp on the dyno, but after 22,000 miles of daily driving and the car sitting in a junkyard for who knows how long, the engine lost oil pressure and locked the front rotor bearing. currently I am almost ready to rebuild the engine (just waiting on modded renesis rotors and resurfaced housings to come back) and the car is running on my stock port 12a in the mean time. Glad to hear you got yours back on the road, good job

    Good job! What is the total cost of the completed swap? Is the performance of the s4 na better or worse than a gsl-se stock with the 13b six ports engine?

    • @ShootingCars
      @ShootingCars  Před 4 lety

      Alexandre Messier around $2500 and that includes the standalone Ecu, harness, and all the other upgrades. The S4 is slightly better than the GSL-SE stock vs stock, but has way more tuning capabilities and more parts that are easier to find, since there were so many S4 FCs and not so many GSL-SEs

    • @reed7434
      @reed7434 Před 5 lety +1

      if it's a rotary you can street port it. you'll get anywhere from 10hp-30hp gain depending on how crazy your port is, and with proper tuning. while it's out of the car might as well throw a 5 speed in there.

    I had a 89 gsl se with the 13b cherry bomb exhaust and couple other mods. I beat the shit out of some mustangs and a old school supra... I drove that car daily... The motor I was running wasn't even street legal in California I couldn't smog it used to get the numbers to put in the window from DMV and I would only get about 60 something miles on a tank it had to be a race build I got it from a friend that built two of them. I got rid of it pretty fast.. But I miss that car so much
