I have had quite a few rotaries in my lifetime and I must say that I absolutely love the FB and rotaries in general. My 81 base FB had over 200k on the stock 12A. I have always said, love and care for your Rotary and it will take care of you in return... when it feels like it.

This is amazing you guys kept them running that long, I have an 83' 12a Rx-7 with 168, I plan on bringing it to 250. I'm changing oil every 1000 miles and I am gonna get the seals redone on the engine.

I had an '84 and it ran great until a little over 200,000 miles when it blew an apex seal. I decided against repairing it as I was told that needed to go with a new engine case for the rebuild in order to get the longevity. I traded it off instead for a '92 Camaro. What a heavy pig compared to the delightfully tossable RX7. Regretted that decision.

@@liampettit7446 My '88 GTU made it to 319k miles on the bone stock original motor; never opened up, nothing ever replaced internally. It was honestly easy to care for. I swapped the catalytic converters for resonaters and ran 2.5 inch single-exit exhaust. I had upgraded the radiator and replaced as many hoses as possible with silicone units. Other than keeping oil in it and making sure to drive it hard, like it was meant to be driven, I never had to resort to any bizarre maintenance rituals. Hell, I never even pre-mixed my fuel.. not once.
I guarantee that car would have seen at least 400k miles, if not way more, had it not been for the drunk driver that T-boned me at 40 MPH when he blasted through an intersection.
I replaced my beloved '88 GTU with a '90 Turbo-II. In all, I've owned four RX-7s and plan on purchasing an FD3S (third generation) next Spring.
      Cheers! 🍻

Great video !!!!! I am 60 years old. Owned 11 Rotary Mazda's. From RX2, RX3, RX4 (coupe and station wagon) and a few RX7. including both series. Also was lucky enough to have 3 friends that owned the 1970 R100 and Cosmo models. I also know who has a 1978 RX3 - SP and another friend who is restoring a RX3 station wagon. Rotary cars are a puertorican and Australian thing. Currently, hopefully this week I will be acquiring a 1985 GSL - SE........will see how it goes.........thanks again for this great video.

They are all SA22C... The only reason they're called FB in the states (and only in the states), is because VIN became mandatory in 1981, forcing Mazda to rename the chassis numbers for USDM cars. Everywhere else in the world, 1979 to 1985 cars are SA22C.
    I own a 1985 12a-turbo SA22C myself.

We just saw and drove an 1985 rx-7 today that we saw at an estate sale of all places, and it was kept like showroom new by the owner (passed away - old guy). It has like 72000 on it. I still cant believe how great it look inside and out, and the engine bay looked good, the engine sounded good to me. They wanted $5500 for it. Never drive in the rain, kept in garage its whole life, all original everything. Was the brown color, and even the A/C was blowing cold too. Amazing car. When putting in the reverse, the engine 'sounded' different, like it was choking or sputtering a little bit, dont know if that is tranmission or what that was. I never felt that in a car before when putting into reverse while your foot was on brake. Once you started backing up, it sounded more normal. Still odd though.

I din't realize how special my RX7 was when I moved overseas in 1988. Sold it to my brother snd when he wanted to sell it he didn't tell me... which kinda burned. European models are slightly differnt from what I can see. My dads car has all the trim you would describe as an GSL-SE, but runs on a 12a engine. It has the 4x114.3 pcd, and all around disc-brakes. It´s an 84 so you have the newer styler interior, with power-windows, although without the techy stereosystem. Yet it has no trim-level assigned to it, and from what I can see almost all FB´s sold here are at least on this standard. Also personally I have never seen an RX7 without backseats, they all had them afaik... Then again I have never seen one with a sunroof.
Also like commented earlier the chassis-code is still SA22C...

Seeing this video is great, it takes me back 20 years when I started the work on my 84GS and began my memorization of the 1st gen differences and quirks. There is even more to it, like the limited edition in 83, the brake cooling slots, infamous oil cooler changes and the various exhaust changes over the years, but this is a nice overview for a potential 1st gen buyer.

😎 Transformers Generation 1 Autobot Omnibot Camshaft was a Mazda G1 S2 FB RX-7 from the NADM, in Sunset Silver Metallic. Although the toy was made by Takara, a Japanese company, they actually made a toy of a Japanese-produced vehicle to the NADM spec.
🤓 The key indications of Camshaft being an S2 FB are:
    1. The rounded bumpers of the FB, and not the blocky safety bumpers of the S1 SA.
    2. The wraparound front turn sigs of the FB, instead of the S1 SA's turn sigs that were squarely on the front of the bumper.
    3. The front air dam only has the central air louvers of the S2 FB but not the lateral brake cooling louvers of the S3.
    4. The classic NADM FB rear fascia has horizontally striped Plexiglass that runs through and between the taillights. No gap, and no smooth sheet metal.
    5. The rear license plate of the FB fits into a recess under the rear bumper, instead of above it like on the S1-S3 SA.
(And yes, it is totally ironic that Hasbro named a toy based on rotary car "Camshaft". But then, Transformer cars ran on exotic Energon fuel and had no space inside for conventional drivetrains and axle assemblies because of all the robot dangly bits, so _most_ of their names based on familiar automobile lingo weren't particular accurate, so why start with Camshaft? 🤷‍♂️😉)

Bother good...man Nissan and Toyota and even Mitsubishi and Subaru just can't even touch these cars and the heights they reached with them...not yet at least. I think the 81 and 82 years are the best. You've got the sweet looking interior, I love the way the dash is on interior 1 (with the slight changes that the 81-83 years have), except you dont get the ugly park bench bumpers and you get the carbureted rotary. The reason I don't include the 83 is because apparently you don't get the nice large lower mounted factory oil cooler. That thing is huge! I bet it has as much surface area as most stock radiators on some cars! Now just swap in the GSL-SE LSD and rear end with the disc brakes, an aftermarket carburetor, some watanabes and I think that's the perfect FB.

I like it, very informative and short. But could you make the same thing, but with all RX7?

  • @unleavenedkaraiteplus3412

Video does no mention of the the198010th Anniversary FA Models. Super Rare car with a 10th Anniversary Badge Sunroof and Power Mirrors... Red with a red stripe down the center of the seats (also 323 and 626 Anniversaries had the same color and interior schemes, only Red)
    Notes:
    1. All GSLSEs did not come with glass roofs, that was an option on any RX7.
    2. The reason the FA does not have Compartments behind the seat it's because there's no room for them... the frame on the FA at that point is wider(taller) as compared to the FB.
    3. Sunroof on the FA was a Clip-up type, it was not adjustable.
    4. It's obvious that who ever percents this video gathered the information from the internet... not practical experience.
    5. He also forgot to mention that all Rear Disc Brakes equipped RX7s also had a limited slip.
    6. The axles in the 84 and 85 are also thicker as compared to the 83 and previous.
    7. In Japan the GSLSE had a 12-A Turbo

  • @keithrx3c

Other markets were different to the US. Here in Australia all first gen RX-7's were known as SA and all came with 12A engines. At least that's my understanding.
Wasn't there a series 3 FB that came with a 12A turbo as well as the N/A 13B?

    • @MJTAUTOMOTIVE
      @MJTAUTOMOTIVE Před 7 lety +2

keithrx3c . That's correct Keith, in Australia there was only one model prefix known as the sa. The 12a turbo was jdm only and the US got the n/a 13b with injection.
