    1992. I was 16. My parents bought me a 1979 Rx-7 in Red, with a black vinyl interior. Loved it for 3 years. Learned how to work on it. Carried myself and 4 (!) other people to school in it. 13" Campagnolo-style wheels were small even by early '90's standards, but looked great! And it REALLY WAS like baby VTEC when the second butterfly opened in the Mazda 4-barrel carb. I wish I had that car back. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

      At 16yrs old I had an 80 rx7.In early 80's these seemed to handle corners like a go-kart.So fun to drive!Not many early 80's cars could hang with it on a twisted road.I sure miss those days as well.Great memories packing friends into the hatch too lol.

    Thanks for doing this guys. This was my first car and I've owned 2 more since. It means a lot to have the pros make something that recognises how special these cars are without comparing it to a V8. Side note - back in the day Motortrend measured more lateral G's out of a top trim FB (GSL-SE) than a Lotus Esprit and Ferrari 308 of the same year. This car is all about the old school handling and tearing it up from 5k-7k. The 84 GSL-SE beat an 83 Porsche 944 in the 1/4 mile according to Motor Week. These cars were gold.

    Thanks for the video guys. I've owned the '82 Rx-7 that my dad bought new for about 28 years now. I love the mechanical nature of all the interfaces and the simplicity of the car. The car is far from perfect with it's recirculating ball steering system, meager torque and live rear axle, but the experience is that of a true, old school sports car and one I believe most people have forgotten.

  • @mavrickcube
    @mavrickcube Před 4 lety +3

    Driving a RX-7 be it stock or modified is a experience like no other. The Rotary engine is truly one of a kind that no other engine or car combo can match. Even with all the years that have passed the RX-7 is still praised as a well handling driver focused car. Testament to the pure workmanship that Mazda put into the car.

      @FuLLeFFekT1 you are correct. They were/are notorious for that "extra play" that they mentioned in the review. It's easily fixable, but it takes a little elbow grease. They got a few things wrong in this review (like totally missing the point on the power-band, and that this car was engineered as a handling beast, not a speed beast), but the most egregious standouts to me were the steering and the transmission. Something is probably wonky in this "museum piece"'s manual if they are having trouble changing gears. It should be as smooth as butter and super easily up/down changed and heel/toed.

    The first gen (FB) is an awesome vehicle with near timeless styling (simple and clean). The better trim level is the ‘84-85 GSL-SE with the slightly larger 13B engine (1.3L) and fuel injection delivering about 25-30% more power (135hp was published number). The weakness of the car (assuming you have the more powerful engine) is the recirculating ball steering box. A popular mod is to swap it for one of several rack and pinion gears that can be made to fit.

    The ‘84-‘85 GSL-SE is the pinnacle of the 1st generation RX-7s with about 135hp. They feel fast even when they are only going about 80mph. The design is timeless. It still looks better than most modern cars and could easily be a modern sports car.
    Thanks, that was a nice little review, and very even handed. I chuckled a little at the comment about the “efficiency.” Rotaries are extremely efficient in terms of weight to power output, physical space, etc. but their fuel economy - power output to fuel consumption is low - which really hints at potential the engine design leaves on the table. The MSP version used in the RX-8 produced significantly more power (13B MSP at ~230HP vs. 13B 6NPI of ~135HP) so they made a great deal of progress.

    This is an old video that brings back my RX-7 nostalgia. I had the 1981 Mazda RX-7 GSL. We survived many cross country trips and 3 years on the Autobahn! Believe it or not, I only got 1 ticket in the U.S. but collected 3 tickets on the Autobahn. Sadly, my 7 had the 85 mph speedometer. While on the Autobahn, the tachometer's red line was my "speed" reference.
    I would've still tried to keep my 7 (despite my wife's objections) but back in 2001, when I had the car's ball and joint service done by Annandale VA Pep Boys, my Maya Gold RX-7 suffered terminal fire damage when a car in the adjoining Pep Boy's garage bay went up in flames when their mechanic tried changing that car's fuel filter! Note: Pep Boys treated me badly. Today, even if I had a rusted out junker then I would never let them work on that.

    I remember being 7 in 1983 and going to the dealership with my dad for a test drive. He also looked at the Honda Prelude of that era but ultimately bought a BMW 320i in Baltic Blue. While taking a break from the paperwork at Grand Prix Motors (what an awesome name for a BMW and Alfa dealership) a salesman sat me on the hood of a 7 series. I had always loved cars, but seeing the lot full of 3, 5, 6 and 7 series cars in dark blues and grays around me set the course for my love affair with BMW. I remember the interior was simple, purposeful, conveying the need to only focus on the gas pedal, shifter and the steering wheel. I always wondered about the RX-7 as I didn’t go on the test drive. I remember liking it and noticing how different it seemed to be.

    I still enjoy my 1979 RX-7! Of course now, it has a bridge engine that develops 200 horse power and a 4 barrel Holley carburetor that feeds the thirsty engine. And allowing it to breath is a custom exhaust system that is loud and beautiful. Where were you guys driving this car? Looks like Colorado!

    You keep saying it's not fast and I have to remind myself that my memories of my dad's Rx7 were from Sebring where he raced it. He stripped the thing down to bare metal, put in a roll cage and I don't know what else, and raced it. So... yeah. He still has the car, but it hasn't run in about fourteen years. Or more...

    I am the owner of this RX7, nicknamed "Boris". Thanks for the great comments and stories. The wheels on Boris are 1982 EXIM made in West Germany and dated 1982. They are 6x13. The stock were 5.5x13. Tires are 205 60 13.Originals were 185 70 13. They are getting hard to find but do compliment the car nicely. I still have the factory wheels with the 1983 factory Bridgestone tires but don't want to drive on them. The rotary engine is a ball to drive though not the fastest thing. And as EverydayDriver says..."You don't drive a spec sheet!"

    @Jorge-Tamacas Před 6 lety +2

    First gen RX-7 maybe weren't that fast, but they were light weight, somehow that was helpful to drive a little fast. Rotary isn't a torquier engine, you have to rev it high. 25 years ago I almost bought an '84 RX-7, but I bought an '83 Alfa Romeo gtv6 2.5 instead. If I could find a RX-7 in good shape, I'm sure this time I would buy it.

    I had quite a few rx7s! an 81,an 83, an 85 gsl se with the 13b torquey engine and an 86 rx7 turbo..the 85 13b motor was very nice and a big jum in lowend grunt and interior luxury from the previous yrs! that 13b had revs And lowend with and extra 35hp and torque over the 100hp previous ones...the 86 turbo was a dream car for me...and a deathtrap! it was a beast, that would whistle and surge and press u into the seat as if a giant sunami wave were carrying you and the car forward ...everyone would dissapear in the mirror when that happened, and i mean in secs,they were a dot and u were moving into warpdrive. gas mileage was 13mpg, no power steering, no antilocks... the coolest looking dash and seating position EVER with an off center hoodscoop clearly visable, and the Best seats i have ever had in any car i owned,it truly felt like a cockpit in a space shuttle with the boost to match..I eventually blew that motor when i added a variable boot and twisted it up, too high, the seals blew and all compression lost..I replaced the block with a brand new factory one,right from mazda..carefully broke it in, brought up the boost again but now knowing its limits...added an HKS dual exhaust and no CATS, and OMG that thing was scarey fast...!!! the 1st impressions of it were Unmodified, when i 1st bought the car,...the mods made it dangerous to drive..speeds picked up almost too quick and the brakes were Not up to slowing it down safely..the clutch went up in smoke upon easing in that extra boot and had to be replaced..after that, it would put the power down and accelerate like an f15 on afterburner when the boost wave began...in the end , the damn throttle linkage got debris stuck in it on day and remained full on...i was in 1st gear, it fishtailed wildly,swung one side of road to the other as i tried to correct with the wheel.., too much and it swung into the curb and then flipped over a few times landing on its roof with the engine still redlining till it cut out..windhield caved in, roof squished down upon me, drivers door caved in and im upsidedown, seatbelt on, no airbags in this yr car...i un buckled and kicked out passenger door and crawled out and moved far away from it cuz ive seen movies where they blowup or catch fire... it didnt though.. ended up with minor cuts, nothing broken and refused ambulance and chose to go home..i looked like i had seen a ghost! the whole night was surreal, you shift mentally into another place when these type events happen..detached, like an observer, watching it in slow motion as if a movie.. anyway thats my rx7 experience..and my last truly fast car... i eneded up stuck driving a dodge minivan for a yr b4 i got my ford probe gt 1994 which i stll have 24yrs later..the rx7 turbo went on ebay and sold easily for parts,that factory new block would be desired by rx7 enthusiasts..

    Ha ha, I have the very same car, Same Year, 83 Rx7 gsl, Glass Top and mine also has the Side and rear window Louvers. My Engine was Street Ported by Racing Beat with a Header and custom exhaust. Fun 5 speed. I'm 60 and I'm selling mine because Insurance and gas is so high. I've got my motorbike that is cheap. My Engine and transmission has less than 13,000 miles on the re-build. Engine Tork Brace and Oil Cooler. New brakes and front calipers. Good tires and a Sony CD. Needs paint and Minor issues. I drive it down my Street 2 time's a month. Fun 5 speed. Best offer can drive it home, can't afford it anymore.

    Wow, I've always wondered what the 1983 RX-7 GSL was like on the road. We proudly own & drive a 2008 RX-8, and, although 10 years old, with 81k on the ODO, it's been well owned & kept since new- and, provides us with awe inspiring sounds & grip. A far better handler than we are drivers- it's so good- it makes us look good, and, telegraphs the approaching limits (far higher than we are comfortable exploring on the streets!) Although there are some great Mazda RX-7 FD 'rides' on YT, there are very few 1st & 2nd gen. experiences to watch. Thanks to Roman (a somewhat local competitor?), we have the whole buy, drive, sell experience- he drove it enough to justify 'feeling' the driving experience...I'm glad I have the RX-8 on a daily basis- no stop light racer- it does handle better every other car I've ever owned. But, it sounds really, really fast- all cars want to race it, even though I'm bald, middle-aged and wear glasses!

    I've owned 3 1st gen 12A RX-7's and a 13B RX-4. The rotary is a great motor that deserves to be experienced. I've never had one blow up and they each had well over 100K miles when sold/wrecked. The key to the rotary is REVS ! The rotors spin at HALF what the accentric shaft spins at, so carbon build up is an issue (and that wears on the apex seals), unless you keep her spinning happily. A great teenager car ! ;-) I'm 50 now but would buy a Miata RF type car with a 13B in it in a heartbeat ! HUMMMMMM... Aloha Harvey Mushman !

      There is a three to one reduction from the eccentric shaft to the rotor. 3000 RPM equals 1000 RPM of the rotor.

    Fond memories of my 1981 RX-7 GS on German autobahns, pegged it at 6000 rpm, 120mph equivalent. Speedo was the mandated 85 mph type of the era. Far better than the Porsche 924 of the day. It was rare in Europe back then and I had many natives ask me what it was. Miss it today, recognizing how underpowered it is by todays standards.

    My first car was a red 1983 RX7 like this one but not a GLS and not anywhere near as nice as this one. The interior was trashed, windows wouldn't roll down all the way, but it ran perfectly. I wanted a Fox body Mustang but my parents bought me this instead. I was a stupid kid so of course I was unhappy with the Mazda. I tried HARD to blow that car up. It took it and asked for more. It survived incredible abuse from me. In hindsight it was the perfect first car, cheap, reliable, slow (never got a speeding ticket in it) easy to learn stick on and only 2 seats so no worries about a car load of teenagers. I had some incredible times in it.
