- Automatic cars are becoming increasingly popular, as they are easier and more relaxing to drive than a car with a manual gearbox. New technologies such as hybrid or fully electric cars are better suited to automatic gearboxes, so as these types of car slowly take over manual gearboxes will eventually disappear. If you haven’t driven an automatic car before, the lack of a clutch pedal and different gearbox controls may cause confusion, so in this video, we will show how to drive an automatic car.

Advance Driving School really enjoyed watching the video I feel happier about learning to drive in one now 😁🤓🙃 Could I ask why it’s more expensive to have lessons in the automatic 🤓thankyou
We charge the same for both manual and automatic lessons - but I have seen other driving schools charge extra for auto though, and I expect it's because the cars are always more expensive to buy. Good luck with your lessons!
In America is the opposite 😂. We are weak most of us can't drive a manual
@@justenzo6342 Hi I also heard you guys have to fuel up mainly with gas/petrol even for SUV;s not diesel? Does that sound right?
Sometimes have certain traits like Autism and OCD can make you a more conscientious driver and often have a photographic memory so are better at directions regardless if its automatic or manual as you tend to concentrate and worry about everything in fine detail so when we park you are OCD to park in the lines anyway, same with lanes and selecting gears or selecting park, we park in certain ways unlike other who seem to park with no logic etc you become focused to do everything methodologically missing a method causes anxiety hence everything is done to the letter and logically hence a better driver once we have got our heads around everything of coarse and we are very good at directions as our heads are a giant map anyway, cars are pretty logical unlike other humans! So being disabled isnt always a disadvantage 😁
Automatic Transmission is a blessing on city traffic.
But it has high maintenance on automatic transmission then manuel transmission.Just saying because I got this information from google
I agree in a built up area like mine with so much stopping and starting and endless roadworks it is a blessing
Or an blessing for disabled peeps like myself 🙏🙂
@@jasminali6490 I got one after my strokes.
Facts man I just can't be bothered to drive manual in London, just too much shit going on in the roads
As someone who struggles to multi-task and absolutely detests manuals, this looks like a driving experience from heaven. All I want to do is drive and focus on the road and potential hazards.
I have started lessons in an automatic car. I love it! I've done manual lessons in the past but it is not for me. All I wanted is the freedom to be able to travel from point A to point B in a car on my own. Keep up the good work with the videos. They are really very helpful to learner drivers like me.
Good luck on your lessons!
This is my reason for considering learning with automatic, had some lessons two years ago in a manual but all the faff with gears and clutches was annoying, when I'm not a car fanatic who somehow prides themselves on being able to drive manual. all I want a car for is to get from A to B, as automatics become more popular hope the expenses and costs go down as well.
@@curateddaisies4128 "somehow prides themselves" we don't "pride ourselves" it's called being proactive and actually willing to learn a beneficial skill. People choose manual for other reasons than just "hurr durr muh enjoyment"
purified autism yea but by 2030 there will hardly be anymore manual cars available. It will only be just automatic cars mainly and electrics and manual cars will be phased out completely and that’s only in 10 years time which is not long really . To be fair
In my experience it doesnt matter whether manual or automatic you still have to learn all the other road skills. Learning loads in a manual, the difference is it takes longer to learn other skills of the road, some may like manual for the feel of the car but if you are somebody who has a learning problem or if you want to go from A to B, then gears and clutch add time to learning plus some just dont grasp it or clumsy with them depends on your brain. But you still have to learn other road skills, I have found some ignore road signs but are great with gears, whereas I am excellent at road signs but worse with gears, the more important thing for some is gaining independence and not struggling, which for me and people with problems is more important.
Only in Suffolk would that be considered a hill. Everywhere else in Britain it would be called a flat road.
From Ireland and laughed at this haha, some roads here just go straight up lmao
wow lol
-Londoner
I was actually looking for the hill
It's a great video but I have to agree.
That's a hill? Bloody Hell, not where I live!
@@itchydez I live in flatlands and even I can say that is not a hill
My brother got a manual license. He suggested that I'd get a automatic license as I'm not a person really fond of cars. He said an automatic is enough for someone just wanting to get somewhere quick and easy. And I thought to myself "I can always upgrade to a manual license whenever I want to, and the plus side is that I would already have learned everything you need to learn when driving in traffic, all I would need to learn is adding a clutch and gear shift to my driving"
I know what you mean, I have test coming up in manual and everybody said to pass in manual as you can drive both, but I am not into cars and me and my mom just want to go from A to B its more independence thing and I have have anxiety and my mom arthritis so even if I pass in manual I will get a automatic especially as its stressful with cars by us and always roadworks
@@MickeyCool30 arthritis is a good reason for an automatic. I get that in my left foot so if it flares up, clutch use is very very painful! And most of my driving is in town now, stop start a lot of time, so for these two factors I'm switching to automatic
Am learning an authomatic is just for me to get from a to b ..and is easy ..
All my friends have manual and they said exactly the same thing to me. Even my dad who has been driving for over 40 years say just get an automatic license that way I can drive our family car asap and just learn manual when I want to. He has also been teaching me in the auto car so I am quite used to it, not that it's hard or anything.
been driving a automatic car for 2 years goin 3 and never driven a manual car before i couldn't imagine driving manual car it'll be too stressful for me so auto is much better for me 👍
💟
That’s my opinion too
is the test easy for the auromatic
Yes
I have been learning to drive in an automatic for almost 5 years now and I still hate driving it I have also been learning to drive in a manual for almost 4 years now and I feel more focused in a manual then an automatic and I don’t find manuals stress at all they make feel more aware on the road more then an automatic if you ask me
I find manual cars stressful to drive and would prefer to get an automatic someday.
Couldn't agree more. I tried to learn manual yesterday and it was a disaster mainly because of the damn clutch that you always have to maintain.
@@MehediHasanSizan I never used an automatic car in my life, honestly i just love to switch gears myself and learn advanced things, but i see why automatics are great if you just want to get from place to place
@@Cris-dm1nt Actually i learned for 10days on automatic then 2yrs later i tried to learn manual and it was a disaster for me. So its not the transmission to blame but me. I can see where you're coming from 👍
Am getting mine soon but loosing 3000 euros for keeping the manual car for just a month
I love my manual gears, especially for driving in challenging conditions such as heavy rain or snow.
However, I've found a car I like and as much as I want it to be manual it's automatic! I'm willing to give it a shot though ^_^
This really is an excellent video. As a manual driver for the past 12 years, I have decided to purchase my first automatic, and this video was extremely clear in its instructions.
@ least from the 1980s to his 2004 purchase of an automatic trans Toyota Camry, my dad had driven manuals (Civic [Honda], Tercel [Toyota], Corolla [Toyota]). The Camry was a pure automatic although he purchased a manumatic Mazda sedan.
The above was in Toronto, the capital of Ontario, Canada, a part of the world that very much like the US, overseas dependencies of it and Australia's states and mainland territories, known more for automatic hatchbacks, sedans, pickup trucks, vans and SUVs than their manual equivalents. Public transport buses I've taken in Canada haven't been manuals for awhile, and even long-distance coaches have automatic gearboxes more and more. HGVs are different as many in Canada, if they have manual gearboxes, have non-synchromesh ones. Quite a few are at least semi-automatic ones.
This video is extremely clear and video. Ten stars for this content.
I’ve done about 13 driving lessons in Manual and after watching this video , Automatic looks way more fun to drive than manual since you aren’t fidgeting with gears lol but driving in a smooth and relaxing manner in the road, which seams my type of style. I’m probably going to opt for Automatic tbh . Thanks for the video btw too.
no no do your lessons in a manual, means you can drive both
@@dontpanicblinkThat comment was made four years ago. I'm doubtful that they need to worry about which type of transmission they want to take lessons with, by now.
I passed my test in an automatic, and now have an automatic mini. I love it. Great video thankyou!
Michelle Dowdall how many hours of practice?
Nice! What Mini do you have? I have the new A1 in manual and love it!! How long have you had the Mini?
Are cars more expensive?
I passed in an automatic 3 years ago as manual was not for me .. good decision but autos can be quite costly
1 year ago i learnt how to drive manual car, but after that i got automatic car and its great. The only downside i found is that when u drive on traffic jam for hours and u constantly pressing the brake pedal.
@@projectxgaming Wtf? In a manual you'd be doing that and the clutch
@T Z - Doesn't matter how long it took. Everyone is different.
The important factor is that you make a start!
I’ve never driven an automatic car but quite interesting to see how it differed from driving a manual!
True neither have always been a manual, but this looks extremely easy to drive very simple. I would have to give it a go one day.

Did 5 lessons in a manual. Found focusing on gears and everybody else on the busy London streets, constantly stopping and starting so anxiety provoking. Can't wait to restart in an automatic. This looks so much easier and more relaxing
Did you restart if so how did it go
Thanks for this video I passed my test with a manual car but I am purchasing an automatic car. So this video really helped. 🖒
I am inconsistent with manual and have selective awareness so auto is best for me I can focus on the road more than the gears and clutch.
Picking up an automatic next week and got a 140 mile drive back. Never drove an automatic so this video is a blessing! I'm confident now.
How did you get on? I'm going to do the same!
Thank you so much for your driving tips - I have been driving for many, many years yet still surprised by what I learn on your channel!! And, love the calmness too. Great, TY Advanced Driving again x
UK driving is the best, I never found any other country driving as good as British drivers. Excellent rules, etiquettes and discipline.
You are wonderful and I enjoy your driving lessons. Keep it up and make both manual and automatic car driving easier than expected. You are doing a great job over there.
I'm disabled and have to drive an automatic. I find driving an auto so much easier than when I tried learning in a manual. I now love driving, which was not the case in a manual, but everyone has different wants and needs. Great video, it has taught me what the extra numbers on my gear selector mean LOL
Same here I have dyslexia and I am learning to drive on an automatic car. It's much easier to drive you to don't have to worry about changing gear all the time. :)
@@faithbabirye9980 Does dyslexia interfere with changing gears? If so I wasn't aware.
You aren't disabled. You are Jen, who has a disability :) ps. love your picture!

Faith Babirye how are you getting on with your lessons?
Great video, I found this really useful as I am driving an Auto this morning for work (a hire car) and I am nervous despite driving for years, but always in a manual! Thanks for a fab upload.
Please also remember to come to a complete stop before shifting from Drive to Reverse or vice-versa. If you don't you can cause expensive damage to the gearbox. It is also good practice to apply the handbrake before shifting into park on a steep hill so that the weight of the car is being held by the handbrake instead of the parking pawl. If not it can be difficult to shift out of park and over time be damaging to the gearbox.
I was going to say that
Can you go from manual back to automatic while the car is moving?
This video just made driving look so easy I need to change transmission as soon possible I think I will do well in an automatic car
Gorgeous car
Im just starting my lessons in an Automatic and found this video very valuable information-wise, Many thanks.
I've been driving manual transmission cars for over 40 years and am about to purchase an automatic transmission car so this video has been a great help to give me the basics of which gear to select and when to use the brake pedal to hold the car or select Park.
My test drive in the car was during lockdown so the salesperson couldn't accompany me for the drive, with just the briefest of explanations before I was let loose in the car! A very cautious drive followed but I feel more assured having watched your video. Just have to wait on the car being built!
I couldn’t drive, so I set myself a challenge and reckoned the quickest way to get a licence would be an automatic. I’d had 6 manual lessons in my teens, hated it and gave up, thinking driving’s not for me. So, 20 years later, I ordered a new Aygo which would arrive in 5 months from the factory, found an automatic driving instructor (who was great) and took 20 hours of lessons. Passed my theory, then my driving test just in time (phew!) to take delivery of my Aygo.
Great video, my wife who has just started driving is finding them really useful.
Bury St Edmunds is one of our favourite towns.
Once you've driven an automatic, you'll never go back to a manual.

I passed my test last year in a manual, However still have not driven an automatic as of yet - But at least with this video seems simple enough :)
Very useful tips for driving an automatic car 👍🏻 gives confidence for manual drivers to shift to automatic with ease
Short and sharp useful information gathered. Thank you for sharing🙏
I've been on manual for 6 years now and this looks very interesting. I've been wondering how auto balances on hills, red-light and stop signs 🙈this was a great lesson. Thank you
This a great simple video, they look a much easier drive maybe not for everyone, but definitely suited to those with conditions, anxiety and bad nerves more
Hello There, looks like a really informative overview of Automatic Transmission, I am just changing over from Manual to Automatic. Thank you for producing this incredibly helpful and useful video as it will be certainly useful when I start learning automatic. Cheers Peter Mc :-)
Very informative and well made . Thanks👍🏻
This helped soo much as I am learning to drive an automatic car because I thought manual to hard because of my dyslexia. All of your video’s are soo helpful soo keep up the good work and thank you. Xx
Brought this car home yesterday! Glad to be watching this :)
I've practised in manual cars for years but hearing about automatic cars is a game-changer! It sounds so much easier than driving in manual and I think it will solve most, if not all of the problems I had while driving a manual car! Hopefully I'll finally be able to pass once I've had some lessons in an automatic car!
It is a lot easier to drive an automatic car - good luck!
Thank you so much. I will drive an automatic car for rental and was worried about stalling. So a search led me here. Your video was at the top. That’s how good you guys are. Saw one of your cars in Brighton. Keep up the good work

After 40yrs driving manual cars, I decided to buy an automatic. This video was very useful inasmuch as I was able to drive it off the forecourt without looking an idiot. Lovin’ the auto experience, wish I’d changed years ago! Thanks for a very helpful lesson.

very helpful video. I test drove an automatic and found it very easy. only thing to get used to is break control. I am getting first auto car. always driven manual and burnt a few clutches in life. looking forward to some stress free driving
It is so important to read the hand books as there seems to be an increasing number of auto gearbox variants. Electric for example vehicles rarely have a gearbox at all. Very well presented and informative as always.
I used to struggle with parking so 6:02 - 6:41 is very helpful for me. Thanks!

I only passed in an automatic due to my disabilities but I've noticed more and more people are driving them now. Makes a lot of sense and it makes car dealers make more smaller autos available which is good for me as I couldn't afford a big auto car.

Never driven an automatic car in my life. Great video. I intend to buy an automatic sometime this year. This is great for the city and driving on the motorway.
so much information. I am learning automatic car driving. thanks
I have been learning to drive an automatic car for 1,5 year with my parents in Norway and I would’ve been ready for a test a long time ago, as I moved to the UK as an exchange student I started taking lessons with a manual car and I find it a lot harder. So definitely prefer automatic!
Driving a manual can be much more rewarding imo. You'll have a great achievement when you pass in your manual!
@@MJPercy Who cares though? It's just driving a car.
I say this as someone that has passed on a manual, but I only learnt manual just for those "what if" scenarios.
@@Sackboy612 I think as long as someone is a safe and observant driver and concentrates on what goes on around them thats more important, the more lessons you have the more expensive it is, my dad drove automatic (he learned in a manual of coarse) and loved his car I loved riding in it and it looked simple to drive, I did lessons in manual and it was more complicated, more to think about, I think automatics mean you learn other things quicker. As long as I can get from A to B safely I dont really care. I wouldnt be in favour in cars parking themselves etc as It's nice to learn a skill like that. But its like people sticking with a dial up modem (I know how bad that was!) when people now have wifi!
@@Sackboy612 I agree most just want to get from A to B safely its like transport generally, only those who are interested in the ins and outs prefer manuals, for others its cost but even that is changing, my dad bought an automatic Vauxhall Astra years ago and loved it, it was fairly cheap, he wasnt that interested in the inner workings and he learnt in a manual in 1950s.
I think most people in stop and start traffic prefer them. As someone who doesnt own a car, cars make life so much easier whether its manual or automatic believe me I have lots of experience of carrying things without a car (it affects you health), its what you prefer and are comfortable with that counts, its personal preference.
This is an excellent video. Congratulations and sincere thanks.
Thank you for this, very helpful as my first automatic in 33 years of driving is coming in a few days!
Less stressful to drive automatic. First lesson was on country side and then we went on dual carriageway and I was allowed to drive all way home. On a manual lesson I had the worst experience, because I had an impatient bastard driving instructor who expected me to know everything. There was no learning, just shouting and telling me my turns were ugly and my steering poor etc I stopped taking manual lessons after my 10th lesson when he told me I need 200 hours to even think of passing my test. So for over a decade I didn't drive cuz he crushed my confidence. But as soon as I sat in an automatic car I felt like home. So if you don't like manuals and you find it stressful DON'T DO IT. You're just wasting your money. I will always drive automatic cars cuz that's my preference 😂😂🚗
Did you pass I'm in a similar situation
I agree the constant saying what I did wrong and sorta having a go at me made me more nervous but with my sister who was calm I felt more relaxed.
Been driving a manual exclusively for 28 years. About to get an auto DSG, this video has certainly cleared up alot of the basics for me. Thanks for the information!

About to go from a manual to an auto, quite useful video.
Great video, thanks!
What an interesting channel I like it.
I prefer manual gives me more control, kinda nervous to drive automatic but will try it maybe this year😁
This diving lesson is very helpful. 😎
THanks, I have just returned from Italy and need to drive Automatic and on the left. Thanks for the recap!
When I was 10 years old, I thought an automatic car allows you to drive without you controlling it meaning that the car drives itself (i'm now 16). Then I realize that manual and automatic are to do with the gears
Tesla is on it and so are some more companies.
Highway driving on fully automated cars is pretty secure but they're doing 1 million miles of machine learning and test driving for that technology.
I've been driving for over 20 years and have never driven an automatic but I am considering buying one for my next car. This has been a great video but I am still a little bit apprehensive about not having control over gear selection and the 'creeping' function you mention (especially during manoeuvres). So I have decide to have a couple of lessons before trying my skills on £20K worth of car. It does look like a much easier option for long journeys
Best of luck 👍🏼

Fantastic job, thank you.
It's seems to be a good video even though I'm learning to drive with a manual car
Mmm-hmm
One point to add: in some automatic vehicles especially heavier vehicles or if carrying a load, when moving off uphill from stationary, you may need to slightly depress the gas pedal to prevent rollback as the creep function won't have sufficient power to hold the vehicle on a hill.
We show that situation in this video: Hill starts in an automatic: czcams.com/video/2IWnbF59ET4/video.html 👍🏼
I enjoy your videos as, apart from one camera, there are no others as a distraction. Most other instructors on CZcams have several cameras and you can't look at the output on them all. They also chat and must be distracted to some extent by this. I appreciate the voice over which is much better.

Those who choose to drive only automatic, wise choice, in a couple years all cars will be automatic anyways, unless you wanna drive older cars of course 😜
The only think I think is weird is the reverse xD
Maybe you're right lol.
Also I've never driven an automatic car I have only driven a manual car but i still prefer the automatic car. I really want to experience it
Honestly, I like both. To me a manual car gives you the feel of driving, you have more control and "contact" with the car, you get more of a feel and the full experience of driving (really don't know how to explain it), but with an Automatic, it's more of a chill ride, way more relaxed and less stressful (especially for beginners). All in All, both have their own pros and cons, it just depends on which makes you more comfortable.
No.
I love manual because YOU control the car better, and can be a better driver.
Also, it feels more enthusiastic, and more like driving.
yeah>>
“Relaxing” and “Driving” in the same sentence sounds pretty dangerous to me.
Yes, I think that manual cars are just better because you have to pay attention at all times.
Should have said less tiring. A long drive in a manual car is more tiring than the same drive in an automatic.
They said relaxing, not sleepy. You can be both relaxed and alert - in fact, I did judo where the instructor said to be that. So not on edge, just alert for things, being aware of your surroundings, but being relaxed enough to easily get someone off balance and throw them on the floor if necessary, as trying to judo while stiff is not easy. Similar with a car - being relaxed enough not to be on edge or go into road rage and to be able to drive in a calm, controlled manner, while being alert to your surroundings and therefore able to deal with events quickly is much better than being stressed.
Totally agree being stressed all the time isnt good, its relaxed doesnt mean you arent looking at your surroundings, or cannot react. Not sure people should be driving at all if they arent observing whats going on, doesnt really matter regarding the gearbox people still have to do all the things you would in a manual to pass the driving test.
After 40+ years of driving, I'm moving over to an automatic. This video is extremely useful. I'm sure it won't take me too long to get used to it, although I dare say for the transition, I'll probably be hunting for the clutch pedal with my left foot!
This video is what I needed.
Thank God for Automatic
A couple of points I think you should have added for people that have never driven an automatic before...
When changing gears in manual mode, you do not need to lift your foot off the gas (people coming over from a manual may not know this)
When stopping for a while (like at the temporary lights in the video). It’s best to select Neutral and use the Hand Brake.
Thank you! I have driven a manual for 30 years and was very nervous about having to drive an automatic for the first time. This video is very clear and reassuring.
Have fun!
You still alive after that drive last year then ? 😂
Thank you for sharing great video😊
The camera work is amazing
Thanks - we do our best!
Soon it will be electric an automatic vehicles, and they'll even do the parking manoeuvres on its on own no doubt with sensor parking and auto pilot so to speak.. now my brains started. ✌🏼😁
Our other car is a fully electric Nissan Leaf - which is automatic of course, and it’s so smooth to drive! Quite a few cars can now park themselves, but that isn’t allowed on the test yet, so we still have to park ourselves for now.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool tbh I would want to learn to park myself as its a skill on its own and very useful to learn, even if it could park itself, most I see are awful parkers! But I understand why they like to have electric environmental wise
Hey guys, love the channel, thank you! I watched your videos both before, and after i passed. Was wondering if you’d be able to make a video about what to look for when buying your first car?
We’ll add to our list 👍🏼
Very Informative, thank you. I am 74 yrs old and have never driven a automatic yet. I am changing cars year and we are thinking of a automatic gear box..
