Defects Can Be A Great Feature! - Wood Turning

  • Originally thought to be FOG wood (Found On Ground) turned out to be American Elm. Super tight and dense grain, this came with a wonderful bark inclusion which some might call a defect. For me, it's these "defects" that can make or break a piece. Finished in Feed & Wax.

It's maybe not much, but it's a classic, no matter what you think of it. You do your best, and then some, and that makes it special. Keep doing what you do best, and accept that it's better than most. ❤

Phil, I've been slowly rehabbing for some time now, gotta stretch out these "golden years" LOL. So I have to tell you how much you have helped me keep up the good fight. I look forward to your videos, and really do admire what you can do with a piece of wood. You've changed my opinion of what "firewood" is, and watching the new and old videos is a high point in my day! Thank you, and God bless! Rick

I met a nice guy today at a craft fair. We talked shop a bit as I looked over his pieces. He had all if them labeled with the type if tree except for one that I happened to pick up. He told me it was fog wood, and my eyebrows perked up. When I said I watch videos on CZcams where someone uses that term, he said," Is it Phil Anderson?" You are famous, Phil! This happened in River Falls, Wisconsin. What a small world it is, and thankfully its full of interesting bits of wood for us to find and play with.

A note on Elm, if you are trying to figure out if that's what it is, if it's got any life left in it, it has a distinct smell when it's worked. Especially sanding will bring it out. It smells like a dirty barnyard. It's not really too bad, but it does make it Elm. I do most things green, so it's a more potent aroma.

N-i-i-i-ice! And quite timely, as well. I'll be getting a chunk of this wood ready to chuck up a bit later today and this shows me what to expect. The log was found along the county road up from the shop a ways, where County Roads left it while clearing storm damage. It was brought down in the ice storm 2-and-a-half years ago and the date I wrote is when I sawed it into sections. It's just about time to go back and get samples of leaf and flower/seed for a definite ID. I'll let you know when I do.

Yeah what a pretty little pot Phil, enjoyed seeing that materialize...
Here's something that might tickle you: I've been watching your wonderful craftsmanship for years, taking in all that you teach us as though one day when I might actually have the opportunity to turn something again I will have all your tips stored away ready to use. Well this evening it suddenly dawned on me that you raise the tool rest a little when you change to the smaller swept back gouge because it is smaller and therefore its centre is on a different plane. Now you must have told us that at some point but just now its gelled in my brain and I have brought forth full understanding!😅😂
I have a stick made of elm, English, since it was made in the West Country, Devon if memory serves, the top is formed from a large knot and that is also very smooth under the hand. Similar characteristics and colour to your piece too so I think youre right about its species. 👍👏
