I bought the Trask checkM8 for my 21 Fat Bob because of the horrendous filter oiling. It fixed the issue with no problems. My son has a 20 FXLRS and we did try the diy transmission top cover fix for his. His works perfectly. Filter oil issue resolved on both bikes. I watched your video and a few others before I decided to pull the trigger. In hindsight I could have saved a lot of cash and gone the diy route with mine.
Very intelligent discussion on this confusing issue. Ron sold me when he said "It almost looks like HD was going to vent from this area but decided against it for some reason....*EPA*..." I have 2018 softail so I installed 2020 oil pump during stage 2 upgrade. I then installed the Check M8. Very pleased with the results.
Right on, the EPA. EPA doesn't like any oil mist or gases venting to the atmosphere. Recycling CC blowby into the engine intake has been one of their tools since the 1970s. Harley has to listen to them and play ball, or else. Big Brother loves you
I have DK Customs vented Air cleaner and the Fueling dipstick on my 2018 Street Glide. The best solution was the reduction of heat in the cylinders. Then, it breathes a lot better. Last, but not least is it doesn't leak oil a make a mess of my bike from the air cleaner. Simple DYI bolt on fixes that works.
Trask Vented Trans cover was one of the first things I knew needed to be done when I did my cam. paired with the s&s 55mm intake manifold and my 114" put up impressive numbers for a super mild upgrade.

Never had an issue with oil coming up the tube on my vented oil A1 fill cap setup. Highly recommended. 2020 114, Zipper’s Redshift 468.
I have mine vented into a DK Customs catch can, routed over the ABS and down beside the frame. Works perfectly and shit loads cheaper.
On my 2019, 114-inch, Road Glide Ultra I installed the Woods 22x cam, Power Vision fuel tuner, Dark Horse Motor sprocket which is 2.5 pounds lighter than the Harley Compensator sprocket, Fueling cam oil pump and oil pump backing plate, Fuel Moto two into on exhaust, Screaming Eagle, Ventilator Extreme air cleaner. And later installed the Fueling vented dipstick and this lessened the oil mist into my air intake but did not stop the oil mist when I rode at a steady speedy speed of 75-80 mph. I then installed the Trask vented transmission cover. If I rode at a steady speed of 75-85 mph the pod filter on my Trask trans cover was wet with oil. I then had the Fuel Moto 128-inch build and if I rode at a steady speed of 80-85 mph and parked my Road Glide Ultra I would have a puddle of oil underneath my bike in about 45 minutes. I called Trask and talked to the lead mechanic and was told that I need to install the Harley updated oil pump that has a rubble seal on it to stop the excess oil leak from the Trask trans cover. I was also told that Trask had installed an after-market oil pump without the rubber seal on the oil pump and excess oil pumped into the Trask pod filter. When the 2020 Harley oil pump with the rubber seal on it was installed only a lite oil mist came out of Trask pod filter. Later on, I drilled two holes in the back of the Harley Ventilator Extreme backing plate and ran two rubber lines into a catch can and this stopped the oil mist into my air intake.
installed the same mod as per Ron's details on my 18 fatbob with stage 4 and heavy breather, pipes etc, Purchased a couple of fittings, hose and filter at the local car accessories shop, total of around $50. A little bit of fun removing and reinstalling the plastic cover, just took a bit of time. Undecided whether it made a difference but for the piece of mind and low cost it was worth the effort.
Cars have a PCV valve that works in the same manner as the Trask reed valve. The PCV valve allows blow-by gasses (gasses that escape the combustion chamber past the piston rings and into the crankcase) to vent from the crankcase then into the intake so it's environmental friendly. The engine needs to breath, so I'm not sure routing the gasses and oil residue that come out of the heads back into the crankcase is good idea. Routing to a vented catch can is a better solution.
Exactly! You do not want to vent your heads back into your crankcase. If you do this you will be dumping water, from condensation, into your oil. I ran the catch can on my other bike and I got mostly a milky water and oil mix inside the can every time I cleaned it out. You don't want that in your oil!
A newer mod I got. DK Customs makes a nice billet external venting back plate called the Transformer. It can be setup to vent as stock into the intake or externally into a catch can or filter. Pretty slick unit.
I followed Ron’s advice as well, I do believe it makes a real difference. Had oil coming up through my air cleaner on a 2020 model and since the mod, haven’t had a problem.
Y'all convinced me to do the mod on my FXLRS lol...Or I might use tax return for the trask checkm8. $300 is a lotta dough, but wayy cleaner air, and a metal cover instead of plastic are some pretty good selling points..
Now I just gotta figure out how to fix all the moisture getting in my oil...
I had an '11 Fatbob. Stage 1. I still miss it. Traded for an 18 Roadking with a full Stage 1. I opened up the stock 107 airbox. Now she's pucking oil out the bottom.. got to check out your guys video.. Great video.
I put the Trask trans cover on. Found moisture and goo in the oil side of the cover . So hopefully it will help with that too. I'll find out in the spring
Great video on this subject. I have a couple of new M8s and one of them is still stock yet I elected to put vented tran covers on both bikes. I figured it won't hurt anything by doing it, and like you it gives me a "peace of mind." The guys at HD say it's unnecessary unless you have a 121 or larger.
What you want to do is drill a hole in the same spot on a Trask CheckM8 and route the air cleaner external vent tube down to that so it vents into the oil case. Then use the catch can/filter on the trask to vent any other pressure
I bought a TRASK CheckM8 vented top cover for my 2018 fat boy. Haven't been able to install it since my bike is having a starter issue. I got mine from IronAnchor Cycles for a big discount.
Ron's Workshop video is why I went with it. I just dont wanna deal with the dipstick issues. Im planning on replacing the oil pump system with the new harley SE campump and plate system along with this because of the 18~19 pump issue, and a note that TRASK included in the transmission cover that the pump needs to be updated to work properly with the trans top cover vent.
So when HD has those pump and camplate kits in, I'll be doing the pump and trans cover vent in tandem.
I removed and replaced the trans cover with an aluminum vented cover. Not a fan of plastic on super heated surfaces
You want to vent the head breathers externally to keep the snot out of the combustion chamber... the Trask setup has a one-way valve that maintains vacuum. I run both on my 2020 M8. Bike runs better and oil consumption was reduced significantly.

I did the feuling dipstick vent and its been great ! I haven't find any oil in my air cleaner , I currently running the Rhinehart air cleaner
Installed the Trask M8 Checkvent (top of transmission) to my new '21 CVO Street Glide. I have the Fueling Billet Vented Oil Dip Stick on my '20 Street Glide Special (114-to-117 Stage-4, HD SE High flow exhaust system, and both SE Tuners). No issues or problems on either of my two Harleys. Also, I added the Thundermax fan to the oil cooler on my '20 SGS, and the HD Fan to the oil cooler on my '21 CVO SG. Addressing heat management [maintaining "normal" oil temperature] and crankcase ventilation were the first mods/upgrades I did to my bikes. I've had no issues with oil [from the breather bolts] in my air cleaner on either bike.
My pistons had a crazy amount of carbon buildup ! To bad I can’t post a picture . I did the mad monkey vented dipstick and definitely ran smoother and revs quicker
Attach a steel branded line and atttach it to the exhaust. Suck the pressure out of the motor.
Hello from England. New to harley I was a little paranoid about the reported m8 issues, so I wanted to take every preventative measure possible to avoid issues. I therefore externally vented my breather volts, and did the same tranny cover mod with a 1 way check valve. Cost very little but I believe this will give my engine every chance of being healthy ( fingers crossed). I also feel she spins up a little more freely, added bonus.

Where did you buy your check valve in the U.K.?
If it's a high performance M8 it's probably worth it. If it has other mechanical problems yes, it's probably worth it.

Seriously that's so awesome to hear. I knew that it made a difference when I did it but being able to say that a number of other folks have done it and experienced positive results helps sell it
Its working like a charm on my 2021 heritage 114, even in the new 114 it was still oiling up my intake. Im happy with the performance. If you are worried about your warranty harley has to prove that what you did to your bike caused the issue. I'm looking for the best way to tune my 21 as well screaming eagle or fp3? Anyone? Ron is the man. But hey bro it worked very well on my 2021 just fyi
FP3 by a long shot over the screaming eagle. Proper Dyno tune is even better.

If you are putting in a cam. You are going to increase the pressure …. You put in an external breather at intake… that addresses symptoms… but if you vent the crank case/tranny cover, then you are addressing the cause …
I have a 2020 RGL and sometime around the 5000 mile mark I stumbled onto these videos from DK Customs, Trask, and Ron about venting your bike so I went out and looked at mine. Everything inside my air box was completely dry. Not sure why some people have this problem and others don’t.
most of the oil will be in the intake and throttle body,its not the air cleaner housing getting oil into it ,it's the motor burning the excess oil and leaving the carbon deposits inside your engine,on top of the piston mostly

2022 lowrider st 250 miles puking oil out the transmission cover spent all day at the dealership they lied to me said they were waiting on parts all they did was clean it up sent me out the door now I'm back home with oil on my garage floor I'm going back tomorrow extremely pissed off

I went Fueling vented dipstick, and it was night and day difference. will never look back after that.

I recommend this over the dipstick, however of the dipstick is efficient enough you shouldn't need both

So far as I know nothing has changed on the '22 M8 motor. Plus, it will always be helpful to reduce the amount of moist oily air being sucked into the throttle body. I say do it.

On my 2023 Street Glide the Trask did not work.
How does venting the transmission. Help engine venting. Do they share the same passages and oil
Really without the additional venting, the crankcase pressure pushes all that moist oily air to your throttle body. So once the additional venting is added, diverting that moist oily air away from the throttle body, ur bike gets a much cleaner mixture.
I'm surprised the 21 hasn't got one. My 20 FXLRS has it from factory..I get minimal blow-by

I’ll look it up. But I feel with a tranny vent and Harley vent. It may evacuate the tranny and maybe pull air from outside to pollute the system. But I will check the bloke out thanks

You didn't mention anything of your 2021 to mod, and possible the warranty being voided issue.. Are you waiting for warranty expiration first, even though we should all be able to agree the oil film debris back into the heads isnt good for the top end of the engine
I plan to mod my '21, in fact I already have the parts. Just need to find the time. I am not concerned with the warranty. A replacement top cover (not modded) is cheap.
I don't care if it's faster or not, I want to prevent the excessive carbon buildup
How do you pull a vacuum in a pressure vessel?think about it
I know this is 6 months after the fact but I've been wondering the same thing. The V-8 in my truck pushes pressure out the valve cover breather on one side but on the other side it creates vacuum at the intake manifold which is used for the vacuum assist on the brake booster. So, from the same block I've got + pressure at one point and a negative vacuum at another point. I feel like the only place your going to find a vacuum on the bike is at the throttle body, intake, heads and cylinders. Just my thoughts on the subject.

So after venting through the crank case could you then blank out the breather bolts to prevent any hot air oil entering the intake?
You could yes, however you would be eliminating the vacuum that is necessary. By venting the transmission top cover you nearly eliminate the oil being pulled onto the throttle body.
@@aztriumphster I thought by having the check valve in the crank case vent was ment to maintain the vacuum whilst allowing pressure to release, so blanking out the head bolts should not effect anything🤷♂️. Or I am missing something? My understanding so far is
1. Harley vent hot oily crank case air back into the intake because the EPA forced them to wich is causing issues around power and carbon build up.
Solutions are to add an external breather from breather head bolts however this means no vacuum in crankcase meaning oil from cylinders can not be sucked back to crank case.
Solution 2 vent the crank case using a check valve ( Trax crank case vent cover) thereby venting pressure in the crank case preventing some but not all of the blowby from being diverted through the heads and back into the intake whilst still mainting a vacuum in crank case.
So if you then blank out head breather bolts the vacuum should remain right?
I am making a large assumption here that the venting through the heads from crank case to head bolts is just a hollowed out section through the heads? If so then everything needed to be vented can be vented elsewhere problem solved?
Ya I'm trying to figure out if I should 1 vent the cover and also use the external breather mod with the Monster Sucker.

The most common issue with the vented dip stick is that under hard acceleration, the oil moved toward the rear of the motor and makes its way through the vented dipstick and makes a mess.

@@acegarage4837 haven't done dyno yet. Its a power difference that's difficult to describe. Have u ever had a bike where after u had the break in service done, it feels smoother, quicker and more responsive than the prior 500 or 1000 miles? Its kinda like that but a little more pronounced.

The tranny top cover is already vented through that rubber tube on the front of the cover from the factory...why do you need another one? You can see it in your video.
That opening and tube isn't connected to the part of the transmission that is being vented.
Harley Davidson would have replaced the oil pump...
