Yes, please keep finishing dual land cycles. Honestly, cool new land cards in Commander Precons would make the difference in me picking up certain decks.
+
And finish the one you start anew like the Deserts. There are 3 of 10 now and I would like to see how deserts work for the other colors. Maybe an Amonkhet Commander? ;)
And if you do new cycles: It would be great if they had the basic landtype and an effect if they entered tapped and no subtype if they come in untapped as a little bit of a tradeoff.
Pathway lands would’ve been so cool if they represented omenpaths by showing art on different planes on each side
@@nicolaskerenski5294What do you mean there's 3 of the 10 deserts? - what desert cycle are you talking about here?
The Outlaws common ping land has 10/10 and is completed.
The Hour of Devastation common (cycling) and uncommon (painland style/sac effect) cycles have 5/5 and are completed.
The Amonkhet rare cycle has 5/10 and is also not a desert (though I know many assume they are).
@@andrewsparkes6275 I was wrong and did mean the common cycle that is indeed complete. My bad.
Please try and finish old cycles before creating new ones. I love the tango lands and would love to see that cycle finished.
This, 100% has been needed for yeeears.
@@aaronwilliams7031 Agreed. These are long overdue. 9 years unfinished. Come on guys, get on it!
Its always SUPER frustrating when i'm making a new deck and see bicycle lands (And previously filter lands) from other colors and just... not being able to find them for my colors. Im super happy this problem is getting solved!
I cannot tell you just how happy it made me to see the original Odyssey Otaria filter lands cycle completed this year! As a kid playing kitchen table around this time, these were just about the only “dual” lands I could afford for my 5 color deck, and so I have tremendous nostalgia for them. Please keep doing this for more incomplete cycles! Enemy color slow fetches to complete the Mirage cycle (at uncommon) would be amazing!
One thing we need is all battlebond/ commander legends dual lands in all precons that can use them
lol, I got called out 😂
*Me, thinking about how I should end the video* "Oh, right, and a little something juuuuuuust for burnsboy101's comment"
nimbus maze / grove of the burn willows cycle is the one i want finished most .
@@GoodMorningMagic is the issue with putting better dual lands in precons (like the shock/fetch/battlebond lands) the fact that people will buy the decks just for the individual cards, making it more difficult for people who want the actual deck to get a copy?
@@TrainmasterGTthe cynic in me says it’s just about wanting to charge a premium for sets that do contain those cards, and to not have them be guaranteed. You want battlebond? Pay $9 a pack for baldur’s gate.
Personally I love to see the tango lands (battle for zendikar duals) to be completed as they are very good for budget mana bases and work very nicely with cards that fetch a land type. This same logic can be used for the bicycle lands too. I feel these lands are not strong enough for standard so they may have a shot.
Strongly aggree
Definitely!
TANGO LANDS PLEASE!!!!
Ew basics
I mean like any land cycle can be good for a budget mana base. If that's the motivation I'd rather see a better cycle in that spot.
My guess is the reasoning for "why no Battlebond lands?" will be about leaving obvious paths for upgrades, but I'd be curious to see that video regardless.
Hmm, yes... upgrade$... 💵
Upgrading manabases not by adding utility lands, but adding better dual lands is infuriating to me. All other upgrades make you better at the game. Why is this card better than this card? What do I feel I'm lacking in games that I need, and what's getting stuck in my hand? Upgrading a mana base is just replacing cards with better versions of themselves. You're not learning anything there besides the fact that better cards are more expensive. The fact that any non-utility lands are expensive is my least favorite part of Magic by a very significant margin. If a land has only a mana ability, I think it should cost a quarter. The cool splashy cards can be the expensive draws to open packs, not the pre-requisites to playing the game at all.
Its Moneeeey
"One thing you may not have noticed" Oh believe me Gavin I noticed IMMEDIATELY when you completed my favourite land cycle of all time. When I saw them in Thunder Junction to uncurl the monkey's paw the Fallout decks left me with a feel of I flat out screamed with joy. Unironically. I'm gonna collect a copy of each of these for ALL my commander decks.
Please do more of this. Like a lot a lot more.
Anything to make precon manabases smoother is a win in my book. There's nothing more frustrating than having a bunch of exciting spells in your hand but not being able to cast them.
Terrible mana bases in precons is a heavy theme !!!!!!!
That's because precons aren't meant to be played as is out of the box. That's the marketing that gets you to buy it, yes. But no true magic player (and they know this) actually keeps the deck as is as there are cards intentionally put in meant to be swapped out for better cards. Excess of lands, lack of counterspells, lack of draw/ramp, etc...
I agree with your argument, nonetheless--better is always better.
I've waited so long for the enemy bicycles...
I want to see Grove of the Burnwillows finally get all 9 of its friends!
I don't know that I want an azorius version of burnwillows. I could get behind boros & selesnya though
@@OutdoorPuppet Exactly. The Grove was made as a RG land in an experimental cycle where the mechanic was made specifically for a colour pair, it's balanced because red decks do actually care about opponent's life total.
Lair land cycle would be the one I'd like to see finished. Bounce lands have more utility now with Landfall, Channel lands, Cycling lands, MDFC lands, and other lands with enters triggers.
It's honestly a bit surprising we've had two wedge sets now and neither one finished that cycle. Ikoria even created a new cycle instead of finishing it, and lairs definitely would've been fitting for that set.
I completely agree. They completed the cycle of the dragons But not their lairs
More dual lands being circulated is always a good thing!
Yes, I'm all for finishing cycles (tango and bicycle please), creating new with multiplayer in mind, and completing those cycles quickly). Maybe something like the thriving lands that enter untapped but an opponent chooses the second color from your commander's color identity?
I’d love to see a land cycle similar pain lands, where they tap for a colorless, or they tap for one of two colors if you control a legendary creature. They can be themed around hide outs, and have names like “Haven of Inspiration” as a Red Blue land for example
Lands have been my biggest pet peeve with Magic, please do more of these! It is a big step in the right direction, and I would love to hear about the why nots for battle lands.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR COMPLETING THE SIGNET LANDS I AM SO HAPPY TO SEE THIS!!!!!
ok sorry for losing control, you just made the Mardu fan in me so happy
when I started to play Magic starting with Tariel a good FIVE years ago without enemy talismens and budget was too tight for even check lands I was soooo floored for the lack of colour fixing in Mardu, a doubly enemy pair without any help from Green to ramp out my lands and boy was that a slog... @~@
but yes thank you very much for giving some love to us enemy pair lovers~
My boomer take: They can't be called signetlands if they predated the Signets. Right?? >_>
@@GoodMorningMagic well the later filters "felt" more like filters to me
please don't smite me >~
maybe signets are Odyssey rocks
@@GoodMorningMagic they can because the signets are the most famous part in this story.
Finishing old land cycles sounds great. It's nice to have that kind of symmetry when you're putting a land base together, and finished cycles help reduce the mental load of figuring out what lands to run.
And new Commander Duals sounds like a fun design space to explore!
I think Dragonskull Summit shouldn't be considered an issue.
Yes, in the original printing it's an actual physical dragon skull, but we have tons of landmarks IRL named after mythical creatures that thing happens to resemble. It's totally reasonable to have a mountain with a summit that just kinda looks like a dragon's head (or maybe even doesn't, maybe it's just a volcano with a smoke plume) and say in-universe that it reminds them of the myths of dragons.
I think staff at WotC need to go outside and touch grass on occasion. They tend to overthink things. Sometimes the things they think matter, don't, and vice versa.
@@grasshopper1153 Yup. Literally nobody cares if 'Dragonskull Summit' is in a Doctor Who precon.
There would still need to be a reason for them to have myths of dragons, though I guess they could all just have flavor text about the time a planeswalker told them about dragons.
The point is, why would a plane with no dragons even use the word? For example, on ancient Rome, there was no word for volcano in latin before the eruption that dezimated Pompei because up to that point they didn«t even knew what a volcano was
@@pedromartins272 Why do we, in the real world, have a word for dragon when we have no dragons?
Myths and legends don't need to be based on real things. In that world dragons could be myths too
Really like the idea of completing cycles that have been abandoned or sitting on the proverbial tree waiting to flower. You get a good call back to magic history, and can show what current magic has to offer an old dog, as it were
I'm really hoping to see the Battle/ Tango lands cycle completed soon as well! Getting the Signet lands completed was awesome.
+1 to Tango Lands!
As a Three Card Blind player, I'd love to see the tricolor sac lands from Invasion (Sulfur Vent for example) get completed. All five colors with all other two color combos represented. We currently have 5 out of the possible 30 so there's a lot of room for more of them.
This is great it helps alleviate the main problem with commander precons.
For dual land cycles I would say that maybe you could make cycles out of grove of the burnwillows and nimbus maze because I don’t think anyone is planning on making cycles of those cards anytime soon and they would be a good way to get more untapped duals in to precons.
I was really glad to get those filter lands as in-universe versions
I lkve that the Odyssey cycle was finished.
I would really love to see the Tango and bicycle cycles completed.
It’s about time! Big supporter of this!
Glad to hear it Bass!! :)
Thanks for these behind the scenes videos. Love hearing what goes into the design and decisions behind this card game. Especially interesting to hear how past design decisions effect things 30 odd years later.
I'm so grateful to see the land cycle finished and then immediately followed up with universe within printing (along with some other very neat universes within printings this deck). I'd love to see more land cycles completed (I think other commenters have me covered on begging for the tango lands), and it would be interesting to consider what new dual lands in precons could look like! I also hope the pattern of reprinting universes beyond cards as within versions in precons continues- I think it's a good place to do that (even though I don't particularly mind UB, cards with magic specific art are my favorite)
This is fantastic and I was really excited as soon as I saw it in previews. Please do more of this. Finish all the cycles, make new duals, make them in precons and in packs. Make them available for commander players. Here's a design you've definitely already thought of and should absolutely do. Cycle of all 10 color combos with each basic land type pairing. Rules text is "[[CARDNAME]] enters the battlefield tapped unless you own a Commander in the Command Zone or on the battlefield."
Boom. Perfect.
Honestly, there is no need for the basic land type. 2-color lands that enter untapped if your commander is on the field or in your commander zone is powerful enough.
They can then print the versions with land types a decade later as power crept lands.
Or like…
Cardname enters tapped. If you have two or more opponents, each opponent may Scry 1. If any opponent Scrys this way, cardname enters untapped.
Or each opponent may draw 1 card. If any opponent draws a card this way, cardname enters untapped.
Etc etc ‘each opponent may gain 1 life.’
‘Each opponent may have a creature they control Explore.’
And so on and so on…
@@matthewhayes3710 No no the point is just give untapped OG duals as commander legal only.
Oh, that’s not really possible, as commander cards are legal in eternal formats (cdr, legacy, and vintage).
@@matthewhayes3710 That's why I suggested the specific rules text that I did. Having it come in tapped unless you have a commander means it's just a tap land in Legacy or Vintage and would never see play. It would be identical to the DMU common dual lands in formats outside of Commander and Commander variants.
I thought it was odd when I found Sunscorched Divide yesterday but had never heard of it before!
Perfectly timed video!
This is awesome Gavin! All the above would be great! Keep on innovating and pushing magic. Would love these lands to finally be finished and printed so we can all enjoy them in our decks.
I was actually pretty happy to see filter lands finished - I considered them useless for years but Powerstones gave them new life.
Don't think you guys need to finish the Caldera Lake cycle of lands. I don't know about nine more Murmuring Bosks either, though I would play those. Lands with basic land types are the best not just for fetchability but also for searching functions for me on Magic Online. I do wish the second set of Triome lands had the word Triome in the name also for this reason.
Dear Gavin, my wishlist is a card called "Royal Mox", only works if your the monarch.
Monarch is one of the best commander format mechanics and a card like that would incentivize more people to play it and have it come out early!
Monarch makes the whole game more active, and super helps break the tension early game when nobody wants to make an enemy.
Only if the card does not make you the monarch in kind.
@@WilhelmScreamer I like it making you the monarch for two reasons
1. It makes you a target, so there is a cost to it
2. If it becomes popular, if two people play it, the second one is stealing it, so its ironically less powerful the more people who play it
@@vakuzar legacy exists. A moxen can not make you the monarch.
@@WilhelmScreamerI agree with you on the legacy problem. Potential solution, it works unless an opponent is the monarch?
@@joedoe7572 oh for sure, it would have to be a legendary card, and it itself makes you the monarch. It would only work if you are a monarch, so an opponent can hit you, and you loose the monarch.
I love these. I always thought it would be cool to have a full 20 card cycle of lands equivalent to the Tainted land cycle. Seems like the sort of thing that could be accomplished over the course of a few commander sets, and I’d love to see the flavor of each color taking over the landscapes of the others.
I think the tainted lands flavor fully only fit black. You could *maybe* do you like green or blue because they both mechanically have precedent and flavorfully make sense (overgrowing terrain or flooding it) but someone explain to me how a plains overtakes landscapes.
@@MakeVarahHappen thats where you get to be creative! Could be a landscape that’s been partially leveled or terraformed for construction or something like that, perhaps just settled land, those feel pretty white. As you say green and blue are easy, I think red could just be scorched earth(not sure how that’d work with a body of water though xD)
@@JacintoVG It's not about it not being creative, it's about forcing something to a degree it detracts from the original because 4 becomes 20. The specific becomes generic for the sake of completionism. I like when the colors are languages, not fonts.
Thanks Gavin for addressing the Battlebond Lands, fingers crossed that we'll start seeing them in future precons!...
The completionest wants to see old cycles complete but would also love to see what you all can come up with. Lands are the foundation of most decks and having lands be cheap and available for everyone is good for everyone
I loved what you did with the Godzilla cards. Flavour, art, and specifically the way you did the alternate art naming!
The problem with the lands that comes in the precons is that I basically remove 80% of them and always relay on the efficient ones: shocklands, horizonlands, fetchlands, battlebonds and (less used) checklands. Only in 2-color decks I think on add other lands.
I also want to be honest with myself and recognize that the quality of the lands added in the commander precons improved a lot since the first days. But still, It will be great that new people who just joined the hobbie yesterday can have cool optimal lands like the ones I mentioned before, so those wouldn't be so financially restrictive like it is now.
For WotC, printing a fetch or a bounce is kind of the same, so you don't get profit from ones over others. That's why I don't understand this kind of policies.
Wouldn't it be great to have all the cards easily accessible for everyone who wants to play?
Commander was conceived to be a casual format, where you build your deck with the crap in your shoe box. I remember those times (Grandpa Simpson's mode). Now, the mana base for a new deck is sooooo financially restrictive... if you want to do it decent (not even good). And if I'm lying, please, check the mana base for the decks from every content creator. I feel like a worm every time Olivia, the Prof, Crim or any of the other content creators play a dual land.
LOVE the enemy signet lands, and already have different art to choose from for each of them. I've also been loving the new Arid Archway alongside Sand Scout, which waiting until turn three gives white a Kodama's Reach for only 2 mana. With the tango lands, Future Sight lands, and more... I'm excited to see these sneaking into decks and really helping to smooth out games. Huge thanks to you and the team, you rock!
Love to see it, and I love the art that came with them.
My Greasefang deck immediately got a Fallout Desolate Mire with it looking perfect as a wasted scrapyard, and fitting the colors.
I do like when one of lands stay one ofs. I think the tainted lands only really fit black or maybe green, and I think Krosan Verge is really only a Selesnya card.
I'd love to see the "tango", "bicycle", and Nimbus Maze designs make it into all 10 color combinations at some point.
there's a severe lack of enemy dual lands with land types. it would be awesome to see those cycles finished so it is easier to make budget effective mana bases for those decks!
Hi, Gavin. I first started playing Magic when Odyssey originally launched. I adore the Odyssey filter lands. It was so fulfilling to see the land cycle be completed! Please keep completing dual land cycles. I would love to see these new enemy filter lands with art back in Dominaria and in old border. Keep doing awesome things!
I'd love to see how you all tackle the completion of older Land Cycles and new Commander focused Lands!
I'm also on the side of the Battlebond Lands being in every deck that can support them but I would also love to see a video on why some cards don't always make the cut! Deck building is really fun and I like learning about how you and the rest of the Commander Design Team create each of the decks!
This is amazing! Thank you so much for actively engaging with the community and seeing what we think, as it really helps us view Wizards as less of a finicky corporate god and more of as a group of people who love the same nerdy things we do!
Also, yes please make more lands for previous cycles and new cycles!
I'd love to see dual tap lands that come untapped if they are exactly your commander's colors, so it gives dual color commanders a little bit of an edge compared to commanders with more options based on their colors
YES PLEASE!! Especially for budget builders! Bi-Cycle Lands, Tango Lands, Horizon Lands... and my personal favorite... the slow fetch lands from Mirage. This would be amazing! Thank you, Gavin, for talking about this!
im sure theres dozens of comments on these already. but i would love for the tango lands to be completed. i think them being a fetchable potentially untapped land would help balance out some of the short comings the enemy pairs soemtimes run into.
The Godzilla treatment to Universes Beyond holds a special place to me. It allowed the wotc team to be truly faithful to the Monsterverse art-wise while also allowing an mtg card name. Two seperate arts/names for a card can be a little confusing, but it lets those who aren't a fan of the property an mtg version. It allowed for more printings of the card, and gave fans of the UB property something to collect. Hope they do it again, sometime!
Mana bases are very often the most overlooked part of a deck, it’s sometimes hard to see the “flavor” in the lands when you are more focused on the core of the deck. It’s really cool to hear that this is something that your team considers when designing. I had never really considered it.
To that end, I think this opens up a really cool design space. Being able to design commander centric lands that will (hopefully…looking at you vintage) affect other formats is exciting. Lands that care about commander or archetypes are really interesting. I have always been a fan of the RWB knight land from Eldraine and can image many more similar lands being well received.
I would be happy to see ANY new lands explored in commander. And yes, battle bind land would be great as well.
It's extremely cool to do this honestly, as someone who came back to magic after an ~20 year hiatus because my girlfriend really loves it precons are very helpful for just backfilling basics I've missed over the years and part of that is mana bases (fun fact since you showed it I've got an ice age adarkar wastes next to me as I type pulled out an upcoming thunder junction Eriette build).
Yes, I’d love for more dual land cycles to be completed! Also having dual-lands exclusive to commander would be nice to reduce demand for dual lands needed in Pioneer, Modern, etc
I kinda like the idea of finishing some cycles of lands, but also like new types of lands, for example, the cycle of lair land is unfinished, maybe in addition of printed the 5 rest you could also create new lair lands and dedicate a plane to them, just like caves in ixalan or deserts in amonkhet and thunder junction
I would love to see more things like this. What I really love to see is actual searchable dual lands made for Commander.
Something like?
CARDNAME
Land -Plains Swamp
CARDNAME enters the battlefield tapped unless you have a commander in your command zone or on the battlefield.
Something like that is just something I've had on my mind for quite some time.
One of the things that stood out to me with the most recent outlaws precons were the improved mana base. It’s nothing competitive or high level, but it’s a MUCH better starting point than what previous precons have had. Your explanation for why certain lands could or couldn’t be in certain sets makes things much clearer from a thematic sense
I was so excited to see the Odyssey filters finished in the Fallout decks.
I had wanted to see that cycle finished for years. It was easily at the top of my list.
Id say next I'd want to see the Battle land cycle from Battle for Zendikar finished the most.
This is so good. I’ve been wanting the odyssey filter lands to be finished forever.
Terrific video as always Gavin, lots of interesting lore and inside baseball about the perils and challenges of developing. It's especially interesting how the Magic IP names restrict various reprint options in Universes Beyond sets.
I think the mana bases in preconstructed decks are fine currently, much more powerful and faster than past years.
I think it's okay to have some lands that enter tapped so new players aren't encouraged to play super fast/optimal out the gate of they don't want to play that way.
As for new lands, I suppose it'd be cool to complete the Battle for Zendikar "Tango Lands" cycle.
I'd also be more interested in new dual lands that enter tapped but have powerful/enticing upsides, like the Surveil lands from MKM or something new like a man land that can create tapped Treasures when it attacks.
But honestly I'm not super eager about finishing the land cycles. I don't have problems building mana bases when I build budget commander decks. It's way easier to build a mana base for a commander deck now compared to 10 years ago because there are WAY more dual lands. I don't think mana bases with 3 plus colors should be perfectly consistent, otherwise there's little incentive to ever want to play fewer colors.
I love the direction the team is taking...makes it pretty exciting and cool. I was shocked to see the new dual lands that came in for Fallout. I thought it was a reprint at first and I used some of those lands for my other decks.
Maybe a cool concept is having a dual land that can tap for either colour if the commander is in play. But if no commander in play, it can tap for a colourless mana. Could make it fetchable with basic types perhaps.
OMG, I didn't even realize some of the filter lands were new! I love it and want to see more duals (and tri's?) in commander products! Thanks for the double printing so they're not all universes beyond. LOVE IT!
Absolutely loved this! using those filters was obviously the safe option since they're the least likely to be made in standard, and on the list of cycles players wanted finished, they were one of the lowest (Seeing as how they have been eclipsed by so many others - including the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor filters). One of the most annoying aspects of making enemy (specifically dual coloured) decks that I constantly have to deal with is the lack of enemy lands and have been CRAVING the Battle duals and the cyclers for sooo long. It's really a matter of need at this point. Other land cycles I think are safe to finish in commander decks would be the etb tapped fetch lands from Mirage, the Time Spiral storage lands (esp if there's a deck that proliferates. I mean, we have the colourless one, but not the enemy?!) and probably even the 'show' lands from Shadows over Innistrad.
As for the Battlebond lands, it's become a meme at this point. Let's be honest, the ONLY place that it makes sense to PUT THESE is in commander decks! It's seems like a ridiculous omission at this point. They really should be reprinted into the dirt in commander decks. And this would definitely be the place to finish that cycle as well. In all honestly, the 'enters tapped unless you have two or more opponents' seems like the perfect tool for more land cycles in the future to make sure they stay out of the competitive formats you don't want them in. (reprint of the ABUR duals with this tagline perhaps?) In all honesty, it would fix the issue of people not getting access to the OG lands (and therefore complaining about the RL) without breaking the RL.
In sum, great idea! Love this idea and look forward to seeing this more in the future!
This was an incredible innovation! When I saw the names of those Fallout lands - and how vague in setting they were - I knew we'd be seeing them again. I'll be picking up several for my decks! They're great budget dual lands
I'll echo others though, and say that those Battlebond lands desperately need to be reprinted into the ground.
I saw a video mentioning that some card in a outlaws commander deck was a reprint originally from a doctor who commander deck, and that it’s the first reprint form a universes beyond set. We need more appreciation for the work y’all are doing behind the scenes with this stuff!
I’m glad yall did this and you should do this with more cycles. But, hand over the battlebonds.
YES, PLEASE MORE! More "good" dual lands is just waht we need. Most commander preocons have mana problems. Thunder Junktion decks are so refreshing and perfect. Your work is outstanding. Keep finishing everything you can and we all will love you guys forever.
There are definitely some neat dual land variations that would be worth completing, especially if they get names able to use both within and beyond. One I personally quite enjoy and would like to see get a full cycle is the Nimbus Maze that was shown in this video as well.
I definitely noticed that you finished the cycle of signet lands and was so excited! Please finish the "tango" lands that are typed and enter untapped with 2+ basics and the enemy amonkhet bicycling lands!
great solution!! also enjoyed hearing about the challenges caused by dragonskull summit
When you finish old cycles it really feels like magic's past is being acknowledged and appreciated. Love it! ❤
Yes, yes, and yes please!! More lands! Finish the Cycles!! I'm most excited for the finished enemy set of bicycle lands (Dual-colored cycling lands originally from Amonkhet and the Battle Lands. Thank you so much Gavin!
A land cycle I feel like could easily be made and put in all multi color commander decks and universes beyond are “commander lands”. Non fetchable dual color lands that enter untapped if you control a commander card.
I think the old cycles is more important, and would like to specifically request the 2-color storage lands from time spiral, though I’m not sure they qualify ad untapped colored sourced for your goals?
I've been waiting for the enemy Odyssey Filters for SO LONG and I'm so glad it finally got finished. As someone who likes to build color-heavy commander decks on a budget, the manabase has always been the toughest for enemy-heavy color combos.
Another thing I'd like to give kudos to is the addition of more Recross the Paths effects, non-shuffle land ramp. Sometimes it feels like you spend half the game shuffling your deck, especially in the early turns where it's most difficult. Some of my friends have difficulty shuffling due to disability, so I would love to see more.
(Also I'd love to see the Rivers semi?cycle completed)
One cool idea for a new cycle could be lands that enter untapped if you don’t control your commander. Either that or you could flip it around to make them enter untapped if you control your commander. Either would be interesting design choices. You could also make lands that only tap for another color if you control your commander. For example, what if you had a land that could tap for blue untapped, but it could also tap for red only if you control your commander. There is a-lot of potential with commander only duel land design.
Lands that enter untapped if you don't control your commander are fundamentally duals in other formats (e.g., Legacy) and thus would probably never be printed.
An interesting design could be "catch-up lands", or lands that enter tapped unless an opponent has two or more lands than you do. This could benefit colors that don't have easy access to strong ramp to not fall behind too far behind the ones that do, and also gives a little boost to people who might've missed a land drop or two.
There were so many fascinating land designs in Future Sight we've yet to come back to - River of Tears, Nimbus Maze, even Dryad Arbor! I'd love to see all of these made into full cycles.
I absolutely love this. Finish all the unfinished cycles, and then create new ones, or a new one can be simply created if the Commander product demands it.
HOWEVER, if you're going to do an new cycle, spread it out over the Commander decks of that year's Standard sets.
I appreciate this because Of how cheap these new lands all are. Makes budget building way easier. Plus, you guys put checks and pains in the gonti precon, which is another huge boon.
I was over the moon to see that cycle get finished, and to get in-universe versions so quickly afterwards. The signet lands are great. Thanks Gav, keep it up!
I loved seeing the original filter land cycle get finished! Next on my wishlist is enemy tango lands (the cycle from Battle for Zendikar).
As someone who has been playing since '98, I absolutely adore when you guys do stuff like this.
Love the finishing of land cycles in commander decks, it just feels right and alleviates so much frustration in deckbuilding. I'd be cautiously interested in seeing first time land cycles in precons
I enjoy that the effort is being made for finishing cycles. I support this in any way possible, and look forward to the new stuff. Please add one of the "Battlebond" multiplayer land into each deck. It doesn't even need all of the ones that fit the colors, just one will help so much.
Finishing land cycles AND mana rock cycles is something I am 100% behind. I’d love new land cards or cycles as well. The enemy pairing new capena sac lands, allied colored strixhaven campus lands, enemy colored bi-cycle lands, enemy colored tango lands, the 4 missing horizon lands, a colorless medallion (maybe), shard crystals (Ikoria rock cycle), enemy monuments (dtk cycle), shard banners (ktk cycle), wedge obelisks (shards cycle), enemy border posts (alara reborn cycle), and enemy cameos (invasion cycle) would all be cool to see get printed at some point. Additionally, some of the cards already in print could use some reprints if only just to make people aware of them. Thanks for all you do.
I love that some older cycles are being finished, and I also like the idea of seeing new lands like the type checking lands (Murmuring Bosk is especially cool, being a searchable tricolored painland for treefolk). New multicolored lands for commander would also be nice.
This is amazing. First of all, thank you for the inside. Please keep working on as many dual land options as possible. It makes brewing so much more fun.
In creating my Theros-themed cube, i had a few problems with this myself. I ended up taking cards that are mechanically close to how I want my Theros Cube to feel and using the godzilla frame to mock them up. That is to say, i think the godzilla rename frame is excellent! Its very clean and it resolves much of the confusion with having functional printings of existing cards.
I think that both finishing old and starting new cycles are absolutely something you should do! I especially like typed duals, it makes rounding out colors on a budget easier.
Love cycles of cards - do it for lands, spells, all of it! Satisfying to see a pattern completed, especially after years of waiting.
Also yes, more creature-typal check lands!
absolutely, I was extremely happy to see this cycle finished and I don't like how I often feel pigeonholed into subpar land choices in my UB commander decks that I try to keep flavorful to the original IP. Thanks Gavin!
I love that you and the commander team, finishes old cycles :) A the same time, I would not care for having some new lands, even some powerful ones (example: this land produces X amount mana of one color in your commanders identity equal to the number of times you have cast your commander this game). Regarding the battlebond ones: I think the mana base is getting better over the years, but it would not hurt to step the quality of the land base in precons a bit more.
As someone new to magic and commander specifically I got very confused going into building an izzet deck when there were blue black lands that existed but there weren't comparable blue red lands. When I saw the completed set in fallout I got incredibly excited and I really hope this is something y'all are able to keep doing in the future
Love that the Odyssey filter land cycle was completed. Would love more like this, and would also love new cycles of duals as well.
Definitely keep making new dual lands for commander! Having more options makes it easier to build mana bases on a budget, since prices on these won't spike because of formats like standard or modern.
Of course, if you ALSO reprinted the battlebond/commander legends dual lands more often, that'd be cool too :) I'd love to see that "video for another time" on the topic!
I loved this because I put all the oddessy filter lands in my desert deck specifically cuz I wanted to filter my colorless deserts into them and also because of Blossoming Tortoise, which makes them become ramp. Thanks for finishing the cycle
Finishing old land cycles and starting new ones is great. Having the multicolor decks run smoothly with good mana fixing is a great experience for precons.
As a fan of the Time Spiral Storage Lands, I would love to see more of them. They’re great for general colour-fixing or for banking mana.
I believe what we're mainly missing are the enemy color BFZ(tango?) lands, and the enemy color biomes(AMK cycle lands)
I would LOVE for you guys to finish the bicycle lands! They're super useful and I'm always wishing for more options!
