  • The older Sigma 85mm f/1.4 takes huge 86mm filters.
    I don't normally worry about vignetting, but will the adapter cause enough for me to dislike the images with it if I use 77mm filters?

    That's the video I really needed to see, THANKS! Just the step down + 77mm ND filters doesn't seem to induce mechanical vignette, seems great! I have the same dilemma, I just bought the Sigma 85 Art and don't want to buy expensive 86mm filters; but different from you with just 77mm filters, I do have a full set of filters in 82mm size for my Sigma 135 Art and Sigma 40 Art. I'll buy a step down ring 86 to 82 and try, because if you don't have vignette with 77mm, I do hope I won't have too, as my adapted filter is even bigger then the one in the test! I'll let you know in a further comment, if you're interested.

      Cool, I'd be interested to see if the thickness of the filters you have will cause any vignetting (my guess is that you're good). Thanks for watching!

      @@LightsAndButtons After testing it today I can confirm that there's NO VIGNETTE using a single 82mm filter via step down ring on the Sigma 85 f1.4 Art.
      First I tried with a ND32, the result is perfectly equal to the control image, nothing changed.
      Then I also tried, just for the sake of stressing it, to install a second filter, a CPL; there's no mech vignette even with the second filter, but in this case a very slight darkening/shadowing happens in the corners, that can be easily corrected if needed, we're talking like a third of a stop darker.
      In real life scenario I would say, if there's no sky or plain wall involved, that also with two stacked filters the solution is absolutely perfect, so there's no need to buy expensive 86mm filters for the Sigma 85 Art, any good 82mm filter will do, and doesn't even need to be thin frame, as the solution is almost as good with two filters stacked, so a single thick filter would not vignette in any way.

      @@ritrattoaziendaleThank you so much for this comment! I wanted to get the Sigma 85mm 1.4 but was afraid I would have to buy different filters because of the 86mm thread size. Now I will probably buy it with a 82-86mm step down ring to adapt my 82mm nisi swift vnd to it!!!

      @@_TheDailyDan_ go for it, I did multiple portrait sessions outdoor with ND and step down ring, and everything was always perfect and without vignette. Glad I could help you. But I now went in an even worse situation -_- I sold the Sigma 85 to get...the Sigma 105 f1.4 which is huge and heavy, and also sports 105mm diameter filters! 😲 There's of course no solution about step down rings in this case, so I had to go for a full size 105mm which cost me 85€, but I'm super glad with it, I got the k&f VND 2-32 (more reduced then the std 2-400) and I was really skeptical in terms of sharpness and color cast from a chinese company...well I bought on Amazon so I said if it's rubbish I can send back and get my money back no questions asked...well, I have to say the filter is perfect, no X, no cast, perfect sharpness. I was positively impressed by them.

      @@ritrattoaziendale That’s another lens I was thinking about! The 105mm filter size (and some flaring I’ve seen in reviews) really deter me from buying it over the 85mm. I have seen some of the incredible bokeh produced out of the lens though! It really makes me want to get it but I know the 85 will be a bit more versatile. At least now that I know there is a decent vnd to fit on to the 105mm, I might end up doing exactly what you did lol.

    Great idea, thanks for the video. Would love to see more test shots

    One point is that with a zoom lens vignetting will appear at the wide end if at all. So in this case test at the wide end. Longer focal lengths will tend to vignette less then wide angle lenses.

    Hey, Nice video !
    Can you test the vignetting on using step down rings on a wide angle lens (16mm), prefarably 77mm to 72mm ?

    • @LightsAndButtons
      @LightsAndButtons  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for watching! Unfortunately I do not have anything wider than 24mm. If I do get one in the future, I'll keep this in mind since that could be a cool test to do!

      @@LightsAndButtons what about the 24mm?

    • @LightsAndButtons
      @LightsAndButtons  Před rokem

      @@footemachine Happy new year! The two lenses I have that can do 24mm are the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 and the Sony 24-105mm f/4. Both take 77mm filters natively which is what I have, so I would not need any step-down nor step-up rings with those.
