Woah...have you been reading my diary? I was going to order a variable ND filter for my 18-105 Lens on my Sony a6400...but I have a 72mm thread and the polar pro variable ND filter I am going to order is...77mm. I would 100% put this to good use since I am always in and out of weird light situations when I am out traveling. Yet again, another great video! Thanks and have a thorough day :)

I really like PolarPro, I have their ND8PL, which is very similar to this filter but 3 stops. I also bought one of their step-up rings and that is built well, I agree. The only thing I hate about both is the knurling. It causes them to stick out, just enough to block most lens hoods from fitting on the end of lenses. Some people don't even like or use lens hoods and those people don't care, but trust me those people are retarded. Lens hoods protect a lens better than any UV filter or lens coat. I use them always, not matter what, even indoors, you should use lens hoods. So at the end of the day, I will not be spending $249 on any other PolarPro products and wish I didn't buy one, because I love it, but hate it.

By far the most original video about photography gear, useful AF. Bravo. I saw it once when it was released and purchased the fotodiox ones, but trust me, the guy is right, knurling is not only useful, but ESSENTIAL. Anyone who has stacked rings knows. This is not a hyperbole. Fotodiox rings stack for good and I don't even screw them tightly. I cannot imagine how awful the no-name rings would be. This is not a first-world-problem kinda thing. If they stuck one may try for minutes to unscrew them and eventually will be forced to use a tool, which of course will cause damage to them and maybe even to the lens.

Another great job. Though not mentioned often, this is a topic that should be discussed. It may not be "sexy", but this information is of great help. This is what makes your channel standout. You sometimes discuss topics that may not be exciting to many, but your delivery style and the information you share make them very interesting and fun. For the type of photography I do, the rectangular filters have been the way to go for me. I always feel systems such as the LEE, gives me more flexibility. That's me for what I do. With that said, when I was using round filters I always used the largest filter I thought I would need for the same exact reason you mentioned, reduce or prevent vignetting. Keep this great information coming. The nerd in me loves this type of stuff.

I took your long standing advice about getting the largest filter and use step-down rings to heart. When I was shopping for variable ND filters I realized I was way ahead of the curve because of the set of step-down rings that came with my Nisi landscape/seascape filter kit. When my filters arrived I found I was able to use the 82mm PolarPro’s with all my lenses down to 67 mm. I have not had any issues with the Nisi equipment in combination with the PPVMD-PMc versions. Even at colder temps the filter and step-down rings work smoothly though it is possible to thread them in too tight of care isn’t taken. The added utility of the rings from landscape kit being useful for other 82mm filters is a distinct plus. For folks who are considering the purchase of a 100x150 mm kit, it is worth considering there are step-down rings included.
Hope this helps others out there. Thanks for your video Gerald well done. Three thumbs up from me.

I use IR, ND, PL, and ND/PL filters so much that I switched to Breakthrough's step-up rings but the 72-77 gives me problems. I might need to try PolarPro's ring. In the process of dealing with stuck filters on the 72-77 step-up rings I have used, I have found something that works better for me than filter wrenches to get the filter unstuck - a metal filter stack cap - it prevents any bending of the filter ring and gives me a solid grip. :) Thanks for posting yet another informative video.

Hey Gerald, Thanks for another nice video content ! I did had a question regarding step-up and use of protective lens cap and Polar Pro Defender :
I'm looking for a way to have a quicker run & gun workflow, at present, i have 82mm polar pro filters as well as 2 step-ups for my 67 and 77 mm lenses.
However, when i'm switching lenses, i need to :
    -Switch the lens
    -Get a step up out
    -Mount it
-Unscrew the filter from previous lens
-Potentially unscrew and store up step up ring from previous lens (if say it was 77mm)
-Screw it back on lens step up
-Put protective lens cap on previous lens
Which seems like a LOT to do, and can't really be done with ease.
I was thinking about doing the following : have my step ups live on their respective lenses and get each one a defender protection, this way, when switching lenses i just need to :
-Unscrew ND filter from previous lens
    -Remove Defender protection from lens
    -Screw ND filter on it
-Put Defender protection on previous lens
    However, i'm wondering what would happen if i get a 77-82 defender on a 67 lens with a 67-82 step-up on it... will it stick there ?? or am i f**** ?

Thank you Gerald. I’m a little hesitant to get larger filter and use step-up rings. I feel it may not be worth it. I also heard that adding distance to a lens by using step-up rings will cause “cross-polarization” that is mechanical and not fixable. I know this is usually the issue for wide-angle lenses. The widest I use is 24mm. I would appreciate any input you have on this. Thanks again.

I get step up rings for every lens, dirt cheap once they screw on they stay on forever. But, that means all my hoods, caps and filters are all the exact same. It's wonderful

I use 77mm filters which match most of lenses perfectly. Just got a Sigma 18-35 (72mm), so this video came at the perfect time!

Great video! I always appreciate how to the point you are with your videos. You mentioned the giveaway for a 72-77mm step-up ring. I just got the laowa 15mm and it has 72mm threads, but most of my lenses are 77mm. Could definitely put that step-up ring to use! Thanks

Really cool video! I d love to watch another one about the filter holder solution, as something between this one and a matt box. Have you done one already cause I don’t recall 🧐
    Great job as alway! đŸ‘ŒđŸ»đŸ‘ŒđŸ»

Hi, I'm Gerald Undone and I bought the 18-105 for my a6300. Free 72>>77 sounds good for my setup and trusty 77 variable ND.

Great video, thank you. I came across the Breakthrough then the Polar Pro rings and wasn't sure which one to get - you covered it 100%.
Basically I need to fit all of my 77mm filters on 49, 62, 67mm. PP makes them all except for the 49 to 77mm, so for this one should I double stack (49 to 67, 67 to 77) or just get a Breakthrough 49 to 77mm?

I love step up rings. I wish I had figured out about them before I started buying filters.
