@LastGameTonight It's exactly the right kind of deep personal real friendly funny "Let's really take this time to connect because there's no telling what will happen next" tone that I think a lot of us needed tonight.
The most Mulaney thing is that he clarifies multiple times that he is still alive whilst delivering his own eulogy

the brutal honestly and lack of applause/audience presence makes this video even more surreal
There’s no audience
@@gordonrame9776 yeah, that's what they said lol.
Yes surreal is the word I was looking for when going back and watching this after hearing just now that he checked out of rehab. What I don’t understand is, as read many red flags as this video obviously has in retrospect I wonder why Myers agreed to do it. The entire time Myers is clearly pissed and just barely keeping a scowl from his face.
They are close friends and I’m sure that he had to of been fully aware of what was going on with him. He shouldn’t have done the segment if he was just going to be from the very get-go is clearly seething.
If your friend is in a spiraling crisis from addiction, it just seems odd to knowingly bring him out on stage and do a skit that you’ve read and clearly hate, As you can tell if you listen to his introduction of the segment
This particular portion of the three part segment is really the least cringy, it’s really the first 10 minutes That I’m speaking about
Surreal?

Well, it was a pandemic wedding, so it was probably pretty small, but I would invite John to my wedding and I don't even know him. I would want him there more than certain family members. Like, my racist Trumper uncle can stay home and John can have his spot.
Seth must've been freaking out internally! His friend John, who Seth knows is really struggling with addiction, is talking about himself in the past tense while discussing what others will say at his funeral and going as far as to explicitly request they don't only say nice things. What a dark encounter for the both of them, one of many I'm guessing sparked the intervention. Glad they're on the other side.
I’m glad he had good supportive friends in such a harsh industry
Actually seth and john talked about this and while everyone in the comments was saying “hmm john seems off” seth said he has no clue and didn’t really realize till later

So many shows have improved, without an audience since the covid-19 pandemic.
If a joke is missed, or doesn’t land, there’s no awkward silence.
And the people who want intimate interviews like this can watch at their own leisure. Instead of being fed zippy one liners constantly.
Eg. Stephen Colbert has been a good example also of how a show can improve w/o an audience.
These types of videos humanise the hosts.
It was so nice. Usually, when I watch John's interviews, he's always trying to come up with the next joke but he's more serious and relaxed here.

This interview is really heartbreaking actually. John asking all the questions about death and then laughing at Seth saying he was glad he was here felt like he was at the point of not caring whether drugs would kill him or not. You can see his whole demeanor change after Seth reaffirms it

So I have ADHD, and even years ago before it was publicly known i always thought “man! He looks like he has what i have, he’s so relatable”. Funny thing about ADHD that many people dont know, is that it affects an emotional response in our brain. We feel things more deeply and intensely, often to our own detriment (he asks if he was angry with him or of his opinion of him, because of internalized anxiety and self esteem issues that stem from the natural aspect of ADHD).
You know what else is funny but not really? ADHD makes you like ten times more susceptible to addiction, because it is a deficiency of dopamine in the brain. We crave stimulation because we have a lack of it internally, so we need more snacks and caffeine and sugar, etc to achieve normal dopamine levels. What else gives a dopamine high?
Drugs. Methamphetamines. Which is a literal key component in-you guessed it-adhd medication. Stimulant drugs are literally prescribed to people with ADHD to cope with dopamine deficiency.
Long story short: with dealing with anxiety/self esteem issues (connected to adhd) and dealing with quarantine and stress, he got addicted and it was harder to handle and stop his impulses because of ADHD. because another funny sad thing about adhd is that you have a hard tike controlling your impulses.

That innocent "oh no" when Seth said he might have been mad at him. Poor John. Also mood.
Dang, Seth is a really good friend for people with a ton of anxiety
Seth acting like he wasn't Jennifer Lawrence's crush.
This feels like when you'd sit by a bonfire in high school at a party and talk to your friends right before you leave. Real "my mom is waiting in the driveway" vibes.
i really like how you phrased that🥺
Mmm, like those parked car conversations where you drop a friend off and sit chatting outside their house for a while.
Standing next to your cars in the parking lot vibes
John definitely knew that he was on the road to death and wanted his possible last interview with his close friend to letting him and everyone know that he lived a good life. He was asking these questions to be asked back to himself. I’m so glad to hear that he’s doing better. His friends, rehab, and his son saved him.
Right? And when he said I try to do the best I can and sometimes I didn’t try to do the best I can, but I did everything with the intention of kindness. That’s when I realized that he was saying goodbye to all of us. I’m glad Seth heard him and acted quickly.
@@TheMonroemomma you putting it out made me realize how real it must have been. Bless both men for doing this interview/talk. It didn´t have to be in front of cameras, but that way maybe they will inspire others to act of kindness.
Just for saying, "No, genuinely" at 11:03 I think Seth is a really nice and empathetic person and I'm so grateful people like him exist.
These are the two cutest noodles just chilling and being real and honest
“Gabbin’ With the Guys” would be my favorite segment. John and Seth just check-in with each other once a week.
I thought it was great. They very clearly love each other
Not just two cutest noodles...
...the two cutest plain plates of noodles with a little bit of butter!
It's like they say when they're talking, they both clearly have high EQ's. "Bro Check-In with Seth and John" could totally be a semi regular segment. The world needs more wholesome dudes like this! ❤️
The use of “noodles” in this comment was even better than the content of this video. And the content was superb.
This has to be the most podcast like conversation that this show has reached loved it.
I would listen to that podcast all the time
WOW. The Mulaney&Meyers podcast is the podcast now missing from my life and now I’m going to be thinking about it and how much I miss said non-existent podcast. Likely for the rest of quarantine-esque life, so like...2022

Watching this interview with the benefit of hindsight is heart breaking. At the time I thought this was a "bit" that didn't land (which is out of character for the great John Mulaney), but he was , in fact genuinely going through a very dark time. I really wish him so much happiness and success in the future.
It was an uncomfortable, very suicidal themed conversation, but it's hard to see that in the moment

I love that these two men are speaking openly about social anxiety. They, without irony, are acknowledging the importance of feelings - they said feel a lot - it’s such a great example of male friendship
Thank you, Seth Meyers, for helping save your friend’s life.

Honestly, John Mulaney having ADHD makes SO much sense.
in some ways as someone with adhd him having it is comforting solely bc of how obvious it is

@@dankxng I can't speak for @krysimp but what I was speaking to, was that both he & Seth seemed to be more introspective and their discussion seemed to have more weight to it than one might expect from two SNL buds doing a talk show(so it seems "off" or different).

The two of you just talking about serious, deep things very candidly and openly is beautiful. You guys both have high emotional intelligence and that's so refreshing to see openly expressed by guys without fear or a need for posturing. I love you both.

This is one of the most profound and beautiful conversations I have seen. They clearly like each other, and care, but the tragedy that in the background he was headed to rehab. If this was his last interview it would have been a tragedy.

i would literally watch them talk in any circumstance. their texts? yes. drunk and making an uber driver uncomfortable? yes. them high and eating a family size bag of cheetos? yes. them whispering during christmas eve mass? you better believe it.

John Mulaney has ADHD? As someone else with ADHD, that is the least surprising thing I've ever heard.
I’m so thrilled to be in such good company. It’s always cool seeing what our brains can do! 🧠
I'm so happy for having nice company 💖
Haha this comment cracked me up
I’m never surprised when I learn someone has it
Lmao i knew the moment he made that joke about him thinking about the Beatles having beards while his doctor was giving him an important medical update 😂
People have to stop speculating so much about this stuff just because he entered rehab. It was a relapse so for all we know he could be perfectly sober at the time of this interview. And some people saying he was suffering so much, it's just kinda like you're imposing your idea of an addict on him when it can be a very nuanced situation. I've had friends in rehab that were basically on the brink of suicide and I've had friends that were just trying to get disciplined because it's consuming too much time for them, but they are otherwise happy. It's weird to pick through snapshots of someone's life and try to create a narrative as we just know so little.
Extremely well put
Except that he admitted to reporters that he was out of his mind on drugs at the time of this bit.
@@gabrielbrumberg229 He certainly wasn’t acting like it. Seemed like normal John to me, maybe a little lethargic.

Mulaney wearing that coat he got from the lead singer of The Strokes after hosting SNL is like when a kid doesn't want to take off his Halloween costume. But for real, super wholesome. When are Mulaney and Seth going to start some sort of radio show together? Not podcast, radio show.

Cuts the Seth for 25 seconds:
Mulaney: 😎
Around 8:45, you can see him open his coat a little with his left hand, to put the small pad of paper into a pocket on the inside of the coat. His reaction to when he realizes where he's putting it, and what might be seen from the outside - you see him clearly react quickly by closing it shut, and opening only very slightly the 2nd time to try to put the pad of paper in there. In fact, he doesn't even put it in the pocket. So its almost like he's on auto-pilot, just trying to hang on to any semblance of sobriety and meaningful presence.
I say this as someone who has had plenty of problems with addiction and mental health. I've been where he was at here. His new special on netflix is surprisingly relatable... I never got into his stuff until now. Probably because I couldn't see past his detached affect back then 😔
I know John is out of it here but I think it’s actually refreshing to see two grown men, comedians no less, talking about their feelings and relationships in such a serious yet casual manner.
"Do other people [think about their own funeral?]"

I see so many people in this comment section saying “He doesn’t seem high” Okay, but he’s literally been dealing with this for years, and he’s a performer. *He’s good at hiding things.*
Actually he has been sober a long time and had a relapse. Could've been a one time thing that he relapsed. We don't know how long and much he's been using and I think it's wrong to just assume things and write them here as if they're facts
@@helenas7605 You’re right. I wasn’t meaning that he was never sober. I was just trying to point out the fact that he’s been dealing with both addiction and recovery for a long time. Couple that with being a comedian and you get someone who’s good at hiding things/playing things off.
@@lauralynnmartin1130 that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying it for me
I think it's more a reaction to everyone claiming they could tell something was wrong, which you can't. Obviously the interview isn't flowy and the coat is sort of weird, but I actually like this unpolished type of conversation.
Wow this was just 7 weeks before the intervention. Fascinating to watch this knowing what happened next. Mulaney processes and talks about his whole experience with drugs, the intervention and rehab brilliantly in Baby J.
