I retired two weeks ago and have been practicing three hours daily in six sessions of about 30 minutes each. I'm already seeing a difference.
I've been playing for 56 years. This past year I logged in 888 hours! I typically practice 2-3 hours each day, sometimes more but I always take a day or two off to keep from getting burned out.
Wow!
This is great! Good for you and I'm sure you are seeing great results!
Hey, you should post videos of you playing! :D I'm sure they are great!
@nihil1 all I have to record with is my phone and it will only record about 1-2 minutes. I'm considering investing in a video camera soon.
For each practice season, the amount of time you spend depends on how fast you want to learn. For beginners students, I typically recommend trying to get in just 10 - 15 minutes a day . Once the practicing habit is formed is formed, you can try bumping that up to 20 or 30 minutes.
Such great advice that can be applied to many skills, studies, and disciplines. Thank you.
So true! Thanks for watching!
Fantastic tuition Kaitlyn, so so helpful and I really must thank you for the download. I have been very naughty as I tend to have no set routine and seem to to just sit at the keyboard as and when I feel like it? and when I do its for hours????????????? naughty. Anyways, new year, new start and I feel that my discipline will be much better now and a lot more enjoyable, all thanks to you. Happy new year Kaitlyn, much peace and love to you Gary x
💖 This video comes at the right time! I started learning piano a couple of weeks ago and I'd like to see some relevant progress in a few months because I'm afraid of losing motivation otherwise. So, I'm practicing 3 hours a day and once I finish the basic courses I bought, this is my planning for probably the rest of year one. I'd love to receive any advice:
- Simple exercises to practice finger independence and strength, especially for the fourth and fifth fingers (15 minutes)
- Practice scales (half an hour) + 5 mins break
- Practice chords (half an hour) + 5 mins break
- Practice Hanon exercises (half an hour) + 5 mins break
- Practice the piece I'm currently working on (one hour)
All of them reading sheet music.
Your all videos are inspirational and if I talk about myself really I am improving day by day, once again thanks a lot 👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks for the kind words. Keep up the great work!
I think that it's really depends what I want to do. Like if I feel like hell. I am just going to play to calm down. Sometimes to calm down then go to sleep. Another day I would like to practice as much as I can to be able to do a music sheet. I play with headphones. Also I play without when my kid is at school and my wife is working. Sometimes I just want to improvise based on a song I did ear or just for fun. I am not going to go on tour with KISS. Sometimes I will try to play a song by ear. It's just like music. I will listen to what I want based on how I feel.
Thank you for your videos. I'm 64 yo retired, just started last month. You're encouragement has been key. Now, if I can get my right hand to not worry what my left hand is doing.
How exciting that you just started. Let me know how your progress goes. And here is a helpful video about hand coordination: czcams.com/video/tkx6GOQ9MPk/video.html
Thanks for you advice,I will do like you say hope I will do can do it
Thank you very much 😊
Hi teacher! After a couple of your videos, Ive had bought my set of a digital piano, with a good pedal (thanks to you) and from Feb on, you will be visiting my house consistently! Hehehe Thanks a loooot for helping us noobies! Cheers from Brazil!
This is very much like foreign language learning, which I know a lot about. Someone mentioned shorter practice sessions for beginners. That's right -- for a complete beginner, the amount of *new* information to be dealt with in a *short* session can be large, and it's easy to feel burned out. Later on in one's studies, the amount of *new* information per session is less, and longer sessions are less tiring. The question should be "what did I learn?" (or "what did I get better at?") rather than "how long did I spend?"
Last month, after seeing some of your videos, I finally decided stop idling and just randomly playing stuff. I've already progressed some pages into the Gymnopedie No 1 (I had played some of it in the past, but never the entire song), and at this speed, I should be able to play it (badly, but throughout) by the end of the month! Beyond that, I've been doing some scale exercises both with the "play the major chord along the circle of fifths", and individual hand fingering of 1 octave for each scale going through the circle too. I switch between L and R for each day. This takes less than an hour, but it's going, it's going! :)) Thanks a lot, I think your channel has really unlocked it for me.
Love this! Thanks for sharing!
wonderful
Keeping a journal works for me. I've done it for the past year.
That is great. Keep up the great work!!
Thank you 🎹👍
Thanks for watching!
Hi Kathy,
Happy New Year!
🎉🎊🥂
“Cheers!”🍺
Quality vs Quantity
That’s my approach to practice.
Practicing till you can hear your improvements.
The improvement should get you excited to practice more.
When you are learning something new, time should have the tendency to disappear.
Take Care and have a blessed week.
🙏🙏🙏
Wise words! Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching!
I am 15 years old and I really learned a lot this video
So enjoying your videos. Thank you and I will be sure and share your channel all around to help it grow!!!! xo
Good lesson
Thanks for watching!
Hi I would like to see an episode about correct using of fingers and transitions into cords.
Being productive for me is getting a feel for a tune in my head, then I sit and play and build from there. If I don’t have anything in my head beforehand, sometimes I only spend a few minutes there then leave, I have to feel something first, then I react, and it usually works for me.
I learn a lot like this and play by ear.🤞👌😎
I've only been playing 2 weeks and although I log 20 minutes to an hour each day (the time goes fast!) I haven't been clear in my goals or even what to do. THIS HELPED!
I pretty much can't even walk past my keyboard without playing it. However saying all that I just watched one of your videos and got my bottom severely spanked! I'm doing everything wrong. You are one strict teacher 😂
Hi, I usually practice i spirts because I sometimes have other projects around the house that i need to catch up on. I may practice 10 or 15 minutes a few days playing things that get me familiar with keyboard and building muscle memory such as, playing octave with left hand and cords with right hand, per one of your great video lessons. At other times I may be in my living room sitting at my recliner but memorizing the notes on the treble clef and bass clef, Which I now hand a pretty good handle on.. I am studying the circle of 5ths now to learn what chords sound good together. I have also been learning the song, Last Date by the late great Floyd Cramer. I know I should branch out and learn other songs also
Regards, Berlin Jackson
Hi Kathy, great advices, thanks. I try to practice everyday between 1.5 to 2 hours. 3 years ago without any musical background, I started learning piano at the age of 30. Now playing piano is a bit more than hobby for me. Not sure whether I can play sth in front of manu people, or somewhere just for fun. 2 hours seem not enough but more than that is really hard so far. Wdyt? Thanks 🤗
I practice about 2-5 times a week. And usually 30 minutes, sometimes more. I'm advanced, but all the way is learning, still is!
This is great. Keep up the great work!
Hello dear Teacher and Happy New Year.
Everyday now about 2 hours , time increases because accumulated more and more learned pieces...
Starting concentrating on Sight Reading and IT IS NOT EASY > but guess must be big part in piano learning playing.
Thank you. P.S. Now 9+ month from beginning.
This is great that you're doing 2 hours! Keep up the great work and thanks for supporting my channel!
Kathlyn I'm just starting to play, and I'm 65 years old.

Omg I am guilty of doing everything you told us not to do!
I have an exam in 17 days. I am practicing 5+ hours every a day.
I’m a scrub it’s my first week, I laugh at myself to keep from crying. 😂 I practice for about an hour each day so far. Someone pray for me!
I'm practicing 20 minutes per day just to learn the basics.
I practice for at least 2 hours
I can't seem to download your free planner. 😂
Sorry about that. Email me and I'll send it to you: kaitlyn@piano.ly
I am a pure beginner, practise piano for 2 months, with private teacher... i practise 10 hours / week
10 hours a week is great. Keep it up! 🎹
@@pianoly i am 46 now. I use faber adventure book, now i am working with lesson book 1... but i buy another book, adult piano adventure 1 and hannon too... i think 10 hours a week is not enough to learn the three books.. i wonder how many youtuber can improve so fast with self taught, and finish the 1st adult pioano adventure book only in 3 months...
You are an excellent piano teacher. But 10 minutes a day? 30 minutes? Really? Why do all piano teachers on CZcams give that answer? : )
A beautiful lady!
Two Set Violin say it takes 40 hours. If it takes 40 hours for violin, piano must be at least 50 hours a day.
50 hours a day?! 🤔
40 hours a day or your mother is disappointed.
Thank you for this video! I share a free bite by bite “learn to read music” program on my CZcams channel in the hopes of making music literacy accessible to all!
