  • This video explains in depth the design of Combined Rectangular Footing, this is the 1st part of the 2 parts. 2 columns have to be given a combined footing, two columns are spaced at 3.8m and Column B is heavier than column A. Initially the problem will be analyzed and than proceed with the design calculations. The area is calculated of the footing and than the size of the footing is fixed appropriately, the dimensions of the projections after the columns are shown in detail. Net upward pressure is calculated using weight and SBC of the soil and converted into pressure per meter. To have the uniform pressure distribution the center of gravity (CG) of Columns should coincide with the CG of footing and therefore X is calculated. Shear force and Bending moments calculations are shown in depth, four shear force values will be critical and shear force crosses the zero mark and at that point the bending moment will be maximum (hogging), bending moments and column A and B are calculated and the depth of footing is calculated based on maximum moment calculated. The two way shear or punching shear is checked for the heavier column and it satisfies and safe in punching shear and therefore the depth calculated with respect to maximum moment is adequate.

Please check, you didn't include the 10% from the concrete weight in the net upward pressure step.
