    RULES:
    The object of the game is to be the first player to reach 100 or more points. Layout the board and place the pegs into their holes near the center. Each player takes 12 disks of the same color. Players position themselves at opposite quadrants. The youngest player goes first, then turns alternate. On your turn, you must shoot 1 disk with your finger. All disks must be shot from the outermost black edge of your quadrant. This is called the shooting line. You may shoot from anywhere on the shooting line so long as at least half of your disk is within your quadrant and some part it touches the black shooting line.
    When your opponent has no disc is on the board and it is your shot, this is called a “free shot” and you are allowed to shoot towards the center of the board without restriction. Otherwise, it is called a “Regular shot”. When you have a regular shot, you must hit at least one opponent disc by contacting it directly with your shooting disc or by indirectly hitting another disc into it. If you fail to hit an opponent’s disc, then the disc that you shot with, along with every friendly disc that that disc hit, if any, are removed from the board and placed in the outer recessed ring, called the “gutter”.
    Whenever a disc makes it into the center hole, without being removed to the gutter, then that disc is removed from the board and set aside and will be worth 20 points at the end of the game.
    Once each player has shot all 12 of their discs, then the round ends and points are scored. Discs score points based on the point value for whichever ring they are in. If a disc overlaps another ring, then it scores for the lesser value. Discs in the gutter are worth 0. Calculate the totals for both players and the player with the most points wins the round and receives points equal to the difference between the two totals. The loser of the round receives 0 points. Record the scores and play another round, alternating who shoots first.
    The first player to reach 100 or more points wins. You can play with teams of two by having teammates on opposite quadrants, each shooting 6 discs, with turn order going clockwise.

    Ah crokinole, a classic! Shut up & Sit Down covered this game, but with one rules variation (probably regional variants?):
    Free Shots: During a free shot, you must get your disc into the 15-point circle or it is removed to the gutter.

      My understanding is that that rule is to stop a fairly common cheese tactic. If you could position your piece wherever you like on a free throw, you can position them directly behind one of the pegs closest to you. In practice it's nigh impossible to hit a peg in such a position from the opposite side of the board, so you can just bank 10 points.

    Wow very quick, precise, and thorough! Nice!
    The only thing that wasn't clear to me is that the in-game "points" and the scored "points" are both called just "points".
    As a result, I'm not sure what happens in this example:
    - I play a round with a friend. They finish with 90 points; I finish with 50. They score the diff: 40 points.
    - We start a second round. At one point during the round, they have 60 points, I'm at 70 points.
    - At this point in time, they have a total of 40 (scored previously)+60 (current round)=100 points.
    Does this mean they won immediately?
    - If they did, then I think this video was right to call both types of points just "points" because then it's an apples+apples sum. But the video could be clearer about it, maybe with an example.
    - If they didn't (we must wait till the end of the round to sum up and diff our in-game points to score points), then calling both of these just "points" is confusing to me.

      @vdavid84 Před rokem

      @@TripleSGames I see; thanks! But then it's confusing to also call the in-game points just "points", right? Apples and oranges, but both called "apples". If that's the official terminology of Crokinole then there's not much to do about it, but some extra clarification of this ambiguity would be helpful for newbies.

    • @MrRyanroberson1
      @MrRyanroberson1 Před rokem +1

      The reason why the points from each round are subtracted (45 vs 55 -> the 55 player gains 10 points) is to keep the math easy, but the real mechanical feature here is that the game ends when one player has a 100 point lead on the other. It's very slightly different, but only so

    No offense, I'm very excited to see content put out about Crokinole, but this video has some errors and strange characterizations of the game. Just to point out a few, you don't have to start with your disc 50% on the shooting line, you don't often use the full 12 discs at least not in modern competitive play, most boards don't actually have removable pegs (only the very cheapest or oldest versions of the game), and players don't use the traditional scoring up to 100 points as often. Many of the things that I take issue with here are not outright wrong, they are simply stated as fact without any mention that they are not universal. Some things are certainly wrong though. It's like if I described "Hockey" as a game played using roller-blades on a dead end street and plastic hockey sticks. It's not wrong, some people play hockey that way, it's just not as accurate as it could be.

    • @CrystalClearWith8BE
      @CrystalClearWith8BE Před rokem +2

      @@WolfbloodJakeWilliams okay. I see why you must subtract both players' scores. Remember, the winner of the round with higher points is the minuend while the loser with lower points is the subtrahend. The difference is what the winner of each round scores points after the round ends. If there is a tie, neither player gets points. Therefore, subtract both tying players' points to get 0.

    • @CrystalClearWith8BE
      @CrystalClearWith8BE Před rokem

      I made a mistake. The difference between players is the winner of the round, not quotient since we're talking about subtraction, not division.

    Question- we’ve always played that you must hit into the 15pt circle on opening play or if your opponent doesn’t have anything on the board. Is that correct? Or can it just go anywhere?

    • @osmoduh
      @osmoduh Před 9 měsíci

      I have played with the same rule, if there are no opponent discs on the table, your disc must land in the 15 point circle or at least touch the line. If you are allowed to hide your discs, it is super hard for the opponent to get on the board and you can just farm 10 pointers
