I remembered when I worked in the Trump Tower(Mercer Asset Management) for a company and took the series 7 and 63. GAWD that test was insane!!! I failed btw, and I failed like a down North Korean missile test! I've been there too Rudy, but I left early without taking another test because I realized it was a pipe dream that lead to nothing for about 99.99% of the people and I would have better luck in almost any other field, other than Wall St. Don't work in Finance, its a dead end that leads to nothing and you can literally be happier working with live sharks than working a nothing dead end finance job while being yelled at to increase numbers while calling people and telling them to spend money they don't want or don't have on things they most likely will never need, because it will let them down!

  • @wayfaringsentiment3096

I appreciate that you've put this out there. While I don't work in finance and have no real intention to ever really go into such a job, the point you make about expectations vs. reality is possibly the best put one I've heard since university.
Rarely during tertiary education do you actually learn what your future occupation's workplace will be like, or if you'll even have the stomach or sheer force of will to hold it down once you're there. I appreciate this video as a point of realism against all of the fanciful dreams and assertions that have been fed to myself and people like me about where their degrees may take them.
While I hope that you weren't outright lied to about the prospects and difficulty of your position, that's happened to quite a few people out my way - maybe at some point when I've had more time to reflect on things and a little more experience of my own, I'll go back and do something similar about my own experiences.
Generally speaking I find your more serious videos to be excellent to watch for the perspective you have on these things, so consider that the tl;dr version.
Thanks for the content, and best regards.

Rudy, I do not know if you will read my feedback, but I have gone to school for two years, I have a degree in Respiratory Therapy. I am not working in that field. I have worked my butt off to pay off all my debts and to invest. I spent six years working in a high volume warehouse store owned by Walmart and I have seen around 600-700 associates and 44 managers come and go in my tenure working for the corporation. When you are in the grinding wheel and people around you are constantly being abused until they cry, or they lose their shit, you lose a piece of yourself in the process. It is the ability to connect with people in an emotional way that is truly meaningful. I consider it a type of damage to the soul (a part is permanent, a part is not). I went into leadership their knowing with my mindset, how I tend to thrive in a chaotic environment, that I could reduce the level of hostility a few degrees. I was successful, and I can say that in that grinding wheel, I did make things better for others to the best of my ability. I left there 5 months ago when a severance package was offered to me during a company restructure. I will not lie when I say, I miss working with people who were sort of a family to me as we worked through hell, but I just got another job that I start in a few days and I have a vibe I am going into a new hell but with a different corporation. I consider myself a good person, intelligent, but i must be insane, but I need to make money and invest, I will make it and I will have my house in a few year, I am determines and confident in myself and learning investment on the side now.
Rudy, you are obviously a high IQ person, competent, and play a psychosocial angle on people where you know you can achieve a positive by playing on a negative in a 4D chess angle. I appreciate seeing that. I bet you can be an asshole too, I respect and like that too, that is why I watch your videos from time to time. Trust your mind and gut with your intuitive since, I am sure if you read this you know what I mean. 😁

I don't know if it's just a florida thing but in my experience being one of the people who created and administered those types of tests, a 70% pass rating is quite gracious. For other sectors like the one I worked with, the volume of content people were expected to get through to eventually make it to the call center floor was astounding. I'd literally see thousands of new people every month, and for the vast majority, they only money they'd see was for the training. Every time there was a change on the federal level, there was a new mandatory test with requirements of 100% pass rate, this is after getting certified. Luckily I was skilled enough to be able through using my mastery of teaching and to be able to retain 99% (100% in most cases) of the workforce, but even with those types of successes, that level of control over other peoples livelihoods, I myself got let go for no reason (yay florida). Probably because some executive felt threatened about my ability to run the business or the politics of me being successful in general. It would come to fruition that the executives were looking on making the sector bad intentionally for political reasons as a means to be able to sell the company at a more compelling rate, and the trajectory it was going wasn't satisfying the would be purchaser, who would end up liquidating the business and inevitably destabilize the market. One of the reason I do enjoy watching your content is because you often joke around with these concepts, and it's refreshing. While I am not successful or have any sort of monetary mobility to have my own ventures, it's nice to see someone come out of the machine and do better for themselves. Keep on chuggin, Rudy!

Hi Rudy, Great video. I personally worked in a call center for a few months. Honestly you hit the nail right on the head. I worked for this company for about 5 months and they fired me for the most idiotic reason. Basically got fired because i couldn't type fast enough in french. I live in montreal and french is my second language, so i have really good understanding of the language and how its written. But it turned out, I was just wasn't good enough.
After all that i honestly really didn't want to work for these big corporate companies that don't give 2 shits about their employees. I end up start my own video game company with a close friend of mine and it's going great. I finally get to do something i enjoy. And honestly i'm happy, to see people like you sharing your experiences with the public and telling everyone that life isn't always as easy as it seems. Keep the good work and good luck to everyone in there future endeavors.

Hey there Rudy. I'm a college student right now. I'm studying international business and Chinese language to try to make 6 figures within 5 years out of college and/or have a consistent job. I haven't had internships at major firms or even experience in finance, but I know what you're talking about. I see it in my professors and TAs. The finance and accounting teachers always carry themselves in a different way and are particularly harsh. One of my accounting teachers went out of her way to publicly scold students, but I assumed it was cultural since she's Polish. It's pretty common for us students to ask professors about their experience and why they went into academia. For the accounting and finance professors it's always either "the industry is a little rough and this is a more secure job" or "I'm taking a break from the stress back at XXXXX company." Anyone who can say that dealing with whiny college students 60+ hours a week is easier than their old day job is either gifted, insane, or in the wrong industry. I never want to start a career in finance and feel bad watching my classmates go off to repeat the finance version of the Amonkhet block story line.
Cheers to you, Rudy. Thanks for the video and ongoing advice. May your tacos always remain in peak floppy condition!

Great video Rudy. I currently work in a very corporate environment and am blown away by how the people are treated in the restaurant business. I have been a manager for seven years ... been through buy outs... watched good people forced out of their jobs. Watch companies bend the rules so they can make more money.... putting off fixing things that could potentially be hazardous...etc. When I came out of high school and got my first job I was so clueless how the world functions and how greedy people can be. How crooked corporations can be. Glad to see you show your background and put some real world feeling and analysis to the corporate world and world of finance. How people are viewed as a dime a dozen and are all considered replaceable. Pretty heavy real life shit. Not many youtubers touch this stuff. Nicely done sir.

As someone who got a degree in Econ/Math...this video speaks the truth. Something is incredibly wrong with the way the financial industry is structured and how ethically dim the industry has become. The dehumanization element of Finance is a serious issue. Also, the Series exams aren't the hardest financial examinations. The SOA/CAS exams make any lower certification (CFA/CMA/Series/etc.) look like child's play.

    @THEGIPPER34 Před 6 lety

Just saw some of your content and while I am not interested in cards, anime, or anything of the sort from what I've seen I am impressed by how you are planning and running your business. I've got a finance degree and two masters degrees, work for a fortune 500 construction firm and am in charge of purchasing for some material and labor activities for a rapidly expanding division. You are 100% right about most finance graduates in that unless you've been proven and you've got to really push to move up and that's not hitting its crushing goals and being willing to move and live it while living with that risk that you could be a sacrificial lamb at any moment. That ambition and skill keeps you moving up until you reach that ceiling, or you loose it, or the promotion spots are the long-time people so you're going to sit until they leave (often for years). I went towards this because I like data, analytics, projections, and the constant race to find the next high from a deal but you're right that 95% of those people come and go because they shouldn't be there in the first place. I enjoy the grind but when I seen an opportunity I'll still bounce because long-term I know the odds and after a few years I'll be tired of taking the crap.
I worked for an electric company for a while with those types of attrition rates and they crushed you for a year and the 20% that made it were then given decent packages and raises and the retention rate exploded after 2 or 3 years; the high attrition rate was a filter (I was a temp then so i was only there for a time anyway but it was interesting to watch them drop in a matter of weeks). Your experience and that "damaging effect" is why you've got a shot at being one of those few successful small businesses and you are correct about some of these exams, they are nuts and those regulated industries really value them. It is so cutthroat and when you finally "make it" and get hired oh the fun has only begun. If you are ok with finding a job and staying I encourage people to do that, if you want to constantly fight and be ready to loose it all on one decision then go into the business world and push to constantly rise or start a business for that matter because if you fail at that it's an even stronger effect and it can ruin a hobby. Rudy knows the risks, seems to have a though-out business model, and separates emotion and passion when it comes to running a business. I respect that and hope to do it myself someday with the knowledge I'm gathering but for anyone who's bothered to read this, make sure you know what you are getting into whether that be a career or a business venture or even an investment for that matter.

Worked in financial services until about 6 months ago for 2 years. EVERYTHING you're saying is true. For people wondering if he's maybe exaggerating some, ERRRR-wrong. I worked at a national level company in my local hometown, was identified as someone who stood apart from the rest and was asked to join a managing director's team as his succession plan for when he became managing partner and had to give up his practice. It is unbelievable the things these companies are okay with you enduring. And guess what, the client's and prospects are equally as difficult. There is satisfaction and appreciation in your job very little (in the beginning) and it can be a total soul crusher for many. Ultimately, I had a difficult conversation with my previous boss and my fiancee and decided that my heart and my passion lied somewhere else (technology) and I separated. I feel like I am living on a permanent vacation now.
Financial Services is not for the faint of heart.

I'm studying accounting to be a CPA. I don't have illusions about going in big 4sand climbing ladders... I've been playing music all my life and I needed something solid to make a living - not a career, so I chose accounting (and it can be quite interesting). Still that punched me quite hard in he balls. I just keep in mind that some of your finance knowledge is what makes you successful now, and maybe life will show me a different path once I have some experience and I can get into some interesting projects. Thank you for your video and I would like to hear more about your experiences.

I dated a girl that worked in a call center and they would always have "moral events". It was the weirdest thing to see from the outside, it was like something you would expect from a highschool or . They would have mini carnival games in the parking lot every couple months, building wide contests all kinds of crazy shit.

This is the reason I love and subscribed to your channel. I'm not involved in finance, and I haven't bought a pack of Magic in my life (though I have played the game and some other CCGs in my years), but you combination of the two just speaks to the stats/numbers nerd in me. Your presentation of the topic caught my interest a few months ago, and I've been a fan ever since. This video is something every high school kid needs to hear, because I am sure many people have gone through the corporate slog and understand where you are coming from. Keep doing what you do and I will keep watching, even if you don't wear pants.

I could not even make a dent for myself financially so now I am moved back home to my folks basement and doing manual labor. I missed the on ramp, but I’m happier for it. I just plane hate the big city. I choose rural areas or ski towns. I took away a big message from your video. The business you do for yourself is the most important thing.

I'm in the game development industry and I see a lot of people succeed in their ambitions and a lot more fail. Here's what I think: People go out hoping to find their passion and while maybe 1 out of 50 people stumble upon something they're so inspired and enthralled by, the other 49 of us need to get realistic.
For the 49 which I include myself in; you gotta decide what your passion is going to be. Think of it like this: if you were in prison and your only stimulation was chess, or drawing, something simple. You could easily become obsessed with it, in order to keep sane. But through that you would actually start to love it and get real visceral enjoyment out of it. Choosing your passion is about eliminating anything in your life you want to do more than said passion. It's hard work, self control, and sacrifice, but you will eventually enjoy it as much as the compulsive activities you currently do for free.
My advice is choose something carefully that would make the most practical sense to cultivate into a passion. Something that your strengths and interests can play in to. Do it, or tread water while your dreams float past you and you subsequently wallow in hedonistic distractions to sooth an empty sense of purpose.
    Best regards,
    Cam

I am a banker. I work for a National Bank. I almost quit a month in for the same shit that you were talking about. I only stayed because of the hate the other banker had for me because I got their promotion and cell phone sales suck and I wasn't going to let that bitch win. I'm going to stick with it because of the benefits and there's nothing better in my area. I've seen at least three girls crying because of the BS they had to put up with and this isn't a large branch. I'm happy to know that I don't dread Mondays alone. Thanks, Rudy.

If there is something in your life making you miserable, be it a job, relationship, living situation... anything.... you’ve got to get away from it!
Most things you can change and the changes are simple.
If it’s more complicated, tell someone, get some help, but don’t let that feeling of misery fester.
There are answers out there that don’t involve hurting yourself or damaging yourself further.

    Hey Rudy,
probably you won´t read this. Because of you I got into buying and selling Nintendo-Games on ebay. Your very rational approach towards investing yet your emotional involvement in the matter from an early age on made me think if there is something I have a lot of good memories with, so i can get more connected, more involved with my job/investment.
After a couple of months of analysing the market without investing anything I started investing couple k in bad placed auction and sold slightly above 800 items with an average profit of 12 percent of the overall value. If it keeps going like this I can easily finance my studies with this method. I finally found something I like and I can make money with, thanks to you my boiii.
    Greetings from Merkellandia!

So true... everything is 100% accurate. Ive been in Banking (Corporate Bonds) 15 years now, 5 different companies. Ive managed to make it to the "top". It has destroyed me, I am totally broken. At 38 I will be retiring soon, but it has not been worth it. I would not recommend this "journey" to anyone...

    • @iwanmarais
      @iwanmarais Před 7 lety +1

Less than 0.5% of people succeed, it is not a "fair" and level playing ground. The winners usually get chosen pretty much on the day they start... it does not matter who is the "best". Family and connections matter more than anything. Banks pay you as little as possible. To get a promotion or a payrise, you need to move... and the Interview and selection process is brutal, they push you to breaking point.
