    It’s so sad that Tony can no longer play or sing like he used to be able to. His music will remain some of the very best in the Bluegrass/New Acoustic genre. Thank you Tony for all the wonderful music that you made through the years!

    There’s a Roane County in both WV and TN, but the song is about the murder in 1884 of Thomas Galbreath by his brother-in-law Willis Mayberry in Old Oakdale, Roane County, TN. Mayberry left and wandered for 25 years, returning home in 1909, was arrested and tried for murder. He wrote this song while in the courthouse jail.

    I remember my dad playing this song when I was young. I imagine that he learned it from hearing the Stanley Brothers play it on the radio.

      I play guitar and sang this around Texas but I never could quite get Tony's haunting solo anywhere near his way. You didn't happen to tab this out? (asked the guy who has listened to this solo a kabillion time. )

  • @rehoguma2

    I live a few minutes away from the Roane County line. As weird as it sounds, it's kinda neat to hear such an icon as Tony Rice singing about a place you go to all the time.

      @@shirleyhoward9523 It's in eastern Tennessee about 30 miles west of Knoxville. It's right outside my window.

    Which Roane County is this song referring to, if any one in particular? Roane County, West Virginia?

  • @peterritchie2990
    @peterritchie2990 Před 4 lety +5

    Tony's understated but supremely expressive vocals sometimes don't get proper recognition. Maybe it's the almost subliminal subtleties or maybe it's just when he plays a guitar it's hard to notice anything else exists. TR has genius and heart.

      He was humble to the point of showing respect to his heros by playing their songs in his unique fashion. He was probably involved with Grisman, Crow and possibly Alison in writing several songs
      He would always give credit to the original songwriters like a writer's notations in MLA format. I admired that also about his character. His music will continue to spread for many years.
