And never forget to sometimes write down the Serial number of your high denomination before giving it out for exchange. Money can be switch as well.
The 2nd point is herald nonsense, any legal tender paper money doesn't lose its value irrespective of its date of printing, that's Nigerian factor that should be removed. If the bill is not a counterfeit, it should be ok for a exchange.
What the guy said about not changing at the airport is so true. Everything within an airport is a ripoff including the exchange rates. But why even take money to change??. Why take the risk?? Remitley, World Remit, Transferwise and others all remove the need to do any of this as long as you have a mobile money account to send to. All done in 5 mins usually. I use XE Money (great app) for finding the daily rates (they even do money transfer) but like the other app you mentioned be aware the rate quoted is the mid-price (the actual rate, this is the rate you would use if exchanging to not make a profit) not the buy or sell rates the money changers use. So its just a guide
Only in NGN:
Why is the exchange rate influenced by denomination of a currency (ie dollar or pound)?
A dollar is a dollar regardless of the domination.
Also, what has the date on the serial number got to do with an exchange rate? As long as it still a legal tender it should not matter. Again a dollar is a dollar as long as it is not fake.
NG is one funny country, they take advantage of every situation and try to find reasons just to exploit people.
Whilst this video is very useful for the benefit of tourists; it just goes to show how we think in NG. Many tourists will return back to their countries will little respect for our shallow mentality and primitive approach to justify an exchange rate.
In my humble opinion, an exhange rate should track demand and supply. The denomination should be irrelevant as long as the note or coin is real and remain an officially a legal tender.
In my history of changing money in France, America and UK the reasoning behind their exchange rate nothing like what this man has shared. I only see reasons for why they cheat people.
Thanks for sharing. It just means that people should shine their eyes when coming to Lagos, Nigeria.
Thank you for the video.
I'm scared of Nigeria. I' ll pass.
Yes, Note denominations has always been different. I always go to the bank and change to the highest denominations when I am traveling. Banks will normally ask that you order in advance. But the serial number issue is a fraud because it is still a valid legal tender and has the same value. The serial numbers are just there to keep track of notes produced and especially for criminal activities. It should not be refused anywhere. But you trust Nigeria.
Thank you....Nigeria always crates rubbish sets of rules as if nigerian government printed the dollars.....one foolish person try for nonsense with me on Allen rd in 2016 when I was in Nigeria. I told him to return my money back or you will see what will happen to you right now the money is coming from the U S with me and you want to tell me it an old currency as if his father printed the money....what a forsaken people.
Right. It is still very legal tender.
All the reasons the man gave are just mere excuses, the value of a dollar is a dollar regardless of the domination and/or serial numbet.
As long as it is not a fake note or coin, it remain a legal tender and the exchange rate should only strictly be guide by demand and supply.
But trust 9ja to create rules to exploit their people.
Nice work. For me, the safest and nicest option is to have a debit/domiciliary acc. Can’t imagine changing like 5 to 6 million niara equivalent for a project in Nigeria all the time. But all the same, every man got an option to make.
Hi Sassy, I am planning on going to Nigeria in less than 3 weeks from the UK and I came across your video. Thank you for all you do. Great tips. 👍🏾
I learned a thing about dollars, the serial numbers. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for watching Steven!!
Thanks for this video, but what about the exchange rate for euros,?
I don't charge money at the airport in Nigeria on my arrival........I have naira with me from Canada before i land in Nigeria. I bring naira back to Canada with me from Nigeria whenever I travel to Nigeria i make sure I bring some brand new naira note back like 50,000 to 100,000 naira back in 500notes or one thousand notes in my pocket on my way out of Nigeria that is the money I expened for some few days in Nigeria and it keep me safe from the headache of getting robbed at the airport.
Such a great idea. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I do the same. It saves a lot of headache.
@@h.o.b.makanju2383 that is the best ways to save yourself from headaches at the airport in Nigeria

Thanks Sassy Funke for sharing this important information
You’re welcome princess
Ms. Funke, you are doing an excellent job. The content of your videos is much needed information. Thank you. My question today is on the right amount of tips. I hear also from people that come from abroad trying to juggle the rate of exchange in their mind and to figure out how much to tip in Niara for services. Like a good transporter from the airport to your hotel, or someone who shows you around town etc. Percentage or amount to give that are acceptable and or not insulting. Thank you for your answer.
Great interview Sassy and notable points to know.
Thank you Oji
Very good info. Thanks Sassy Funke for your hard work and notable contents 👏👏
You're welcome. Thank you for watching.
Are people still doing vacation in Nigeria??
Awesome interview, really informative
Thank you 🙏🏾
Sassy this video is a nice one and all what the man says is true.
Glad you enjoyed it.
I particularly enjoy the afro-beat sound track. Reminds me of those days in Surulere Secondary School.
Glad 🙂
Thank you! I will stop there when I come to Logos Nigeria 🇳🇬

Hi, it's really informative.
I always watch your videos, they're really helpful.
Hope to meet you one day.
Thanks a lot.
Glad you found it informative. You're welcome
As a visitor to the country, the BEST rate in the entire country is Murtala Mohammed Airport Lagos. From the airport the rate starts decreasing. The only catch is make sure you count your money because it is guarranteed to never be complete the first time! But in terms of rate, best place by far!!
God bless CZcams.. how else would we have known all these!
😊😊
@ sassy funke- Thank you!! I’m from the US and have used them several times on my visits.Everything said is 100% true. They’re so nice , the Ecko hotel is very nice and they have also very cute bracelets at their shop.
You’re welcome Stephanie! Thank you for sharing ☺️
Can I change my naira to Canadian dollar there
Please how much do they change $10 bill and $1 bill?
The dollar is Dollar does not charge us different rate because of the serial number of the year....
Nice one Sassy, I just wanted to know if the higher denominations thing applies to the British pound as well, or just the dollar
Anything less than 20 pounds gets a lower rate
Nice one Sassy Funke and Aminu nice giving it straight.
Never change money at the airport ooooo
Thank you!
Changed at the airport and got better rate than these guys.
Went to these guys at Eko hotel towards the end of my holiday and got less for my £s. It's annoying to hear this guy say you get less for your money if you're changing less than £20. You don't get that at the airport.
Great job from this channel though content wise.
Thank for your information l really didn't know that this is in issue with money transfer l'm in America an l want to come visit Lago's Nigeria one day now with your help well I don't know about coming because of money issues
This information is enough to make you pick somewhere else to go

pls what hotel did she say???
can i exchange british pounds in Nigeria? Because american dollar is really losing its value
Great Insight ... although very Dollar side... what about Sterling .. does denomination matter too...
Thank you Niyi. Yes denomination matters for GBP too. I believe anything less than 20 pounds receives a worse rate.
Have never heard of this in my life, about new and old money or getting less for smaller bills when you exchange, and i travel to so many different places only in Nigeria.
Have you been to Nigeria
they need to have a fixed rate. in all the countries i have visited, when i go to change dollars, there is a fixed rate , we dont bargain
Why is it that after changing money when you get home or your hotel the money is not complet .
i love that interview you are doing a great job dear keep it up.
pls dont forget the contact and address details of that place i love this
Thank you. Check the description box for the contact and address
Nice content especially for people to whom the information here would surprising
Lesson 1 and 2 are pure examples of the dysfunctional system we run in Nigeria.
FX of USD to Naira is based on the value of $1 to naira, but if the denomination is lower than $50, the goal post changes. Suddenly dollar loses value. Some Banks and BDC even reject lower denominations. The CBN recently put out a statement threatening to sanction those culpable but that's where it ends.....a threat
Then the issue of series or year. Like it gets me worked up. Nigeria is a funny place , like Nigeria just has a way of making a tradition out of the abnormal.
Well spotted; I had the same issue watching it. Exploitation! just comes to mind; NG is just one frustrating society.
Wht only in nigeria
How much do youCanadian $to naira at the airpot
The rate in the airport is better than in my own town.
Which town is that?
Educative Indeed! Nigerian Economy, Being A Dollar Dominated Economy makes it looks like the they are more Eager to accept the Dollar, than other Currencies such as: GBP, EUR and JPY etc....
They do accept EUR and GBP
What about sterling pls
Anything less than 20 pounds warrants a different rate.
I ran into the serial number wahala back in 2019, I personally think it is idiotic and hubris on the part of these money dealers. The US government that issued those bills is still accepting all serial number insofar it is not a counterfeit. I have a 2 dollar bill as we speak, been holding it for almost 10 years now, (sentimental) but I can spend it any time and no one will complain. Just the little things we do in Nigeria to hurt one another.
It’s the issue of the Nigeria government not the money dealers re: serial numbers. The government doesn’t accept those bills
I'm thinking the same thing. Place sounds too desperate to visit
Very informative, certainly didn't know about the code on the money although it is not the currency a lot of us use since it is American but still a thought that one should get fresh notes from the bank close to time of travel. I do have a question about the transactions though, is there a limit one can change with Mr A at a time?
I just confirmed - No limit
@@SassyFunke Thank you :-D
Thanks. Very insightful
Never new about old notes stuff.
Wonderful video as usual Sassy. Years ago I made the terrible mistake of changing money outside MMA. When I got to the hotel, the money I watched them count in front of me was missing by 10%!!!!!!. I will love to know how they did that magic trick.
Wow wow wow 😳 Thanks for watching
Happened to me in 2011. I got home and twenty thousand naira was missing. If I wasn't holding it myself, I would have thought that someone stole it from me
I guess the us$ expires in Nigeria
I was a victim of this old series new series thing in December 2020 when I returned. I was shocked that bank won't accept my old series which I didn't know the meaning at the time. A bank in America giving me thousands of dollars and to be told it won't be accepted in Nigeria, I was puzzled. Then I'm offered lower rate withe aboki. The whole thing tire me
Nigerians and their ignorance it is still a legal tender
It happened to me and I refused to take a lower rate. I brought it back. I worked too hard for my money to settle for less. $100 is $100 whether it's 1999 or 2009 series. The worth remains the same to me. Got wiser after that experience

Sometimes, bank don't approve some notes. I think he could have highlighted more points on this. Like what are reasons, etc.
But still, it's really helpful. You covered a number of things. Kudos to you!!
He mentioned in the video that banks do not accept the lower series...although he didn't mention why just that they do not want the old series.
@@SassyFunke yeah I agree. But you know sometimes, bank don't approve notes which have any mark on it as well.

Thanks Sassy for this piece but I Cant find mr Aminu’s contact in the link as you said. Also you could have asked him about his rates for the 3 major currencies for the benefits of your followers in Europe
I share Mr Chris's number (my personal money changer) in the description box. Yes you're right re: the other denominations. For British pounds, anything less than a 20 pound note warrants a lower rate.
I can not see the contact details of Mr. Aminu either... can you please provide it?

Corrupt Nigeria-what does the series of the note have to do with the value of the note? Old or new series, the dollar has the same value.
I want to bring $300 just to spend and play. What can I get with $300
