Mikko Salo's Training: Double Unders

  • There is no doubting the work capacity of Mikko Salo. Ever since his debut at the 2009 European Regional he has set the bar high. At the 2009 Games he commanded attention with amazing performances in back to back events that exposed an enormous bandwith of physical capacities. Again at the 2010 CrossFit Games, where he finished in 5th place, his performance was elite. However, there are still a handful of skill-based movements that put a cramp in the '09 champ's style when they are pulled from the hopper. The double-under is one such movement.
During his decompression from the 2010 CrossFit Games, Mikko stayed in California and trained at CrossFit Santa Cruz. In this video, Hollis Molloy coaches Mikko towards success in the highly frustrating movement. It's frightening to think of a Mikko with the skills to match his capacities.

I just got 20 double unders when my previous record was eight after I watched this video. the thing that did it for me was the grip. grabbing the handle with my thumb and index finger and barely even using my other three. you can spin the rope much faster that way. awesome post

Seriously guys and girls I was absolutely grateful to see this video and see that Mikko himself has trouble with something I myself is trying to master. Almost all you see of these top athletes are the great and incredible things they do, so I was really happy to see a video where I could see that these guys are human too, and need to work hard on certain things.... Hope 2013 will be Mikko´s year :)

its funny to see he had the same issues with DU as I do... but he is already a top athlete. So I'll go and practice... :)

I don't think he "sucks." But maybe we can find an even better teacher for Mr. Salo. ... I learned the DU with a power single, power single, du. Power single, power single, DU. And slowly worked my way up to DU's. The hand and arm position are super key too. How did you learn em'? =)

hi, I am in high school and I can do 80 du's in 30 sec. just letting everybody know that when he jumps he pikes his legs which is incorrect form. it must have been different in 2011 but whatever

I get a lot of pain in my shins after this. Like, imagine the right leg, it hurts in the shins left side, right next to the bone. Can anyone share some tips to fix this?

Shin splints dude. I have a few suggestions since And they're from a physiotherapist so they're pretty accurate.
1: never jump on a hard surface such as cement or a basement floor
2: where good shoes with good soles not cross trainers
3: if it hurts let it heal or else it will become a constant issue
Do you have flat feet? I do which sucks! I'm getting some inserts for my shoes that make my feet have arches they're expensive but they will stop the issue for me.
4: after each workout ice your shins
Ps. Shin splints have nothing to do with the bone, it's the muscle. For me since I have a very small arch in my foot when I jump the muscle tears off the bone, which causes a lot of pain after the work out.

I have the same issue. Compression socks helps for me from EliteSRS. They specialize in jump ropes.

Really? It feels to me as if I don't have enough grip the to hold the handles. Will need to try again!

Hi there, have you heard of "Musclegends" (search on Google)? On their website you will find a nice free video demonstrating how to pack on noteworthy lean muscle very fast. It made it easier for James to overcome his bodybuilding plateau and consequently develop ripped muscle mass with no fat very fast. It may help you out also.

thats not true though. You dont need to jump 'twice as high', just need to time your jumps and slow them down.

he also sucks at toes 2 bar, and pull ups. watch a vid of him doing fran he really needs to work on his butterfly. pretty much all i've seen mikko struggle at are DU's and bodyweight movements. once he gets consistant with those he'll be laughing. in my opinion the weightlifting needs to take a slight back foot for just a little while and these movements need to step forward. not saying completely cutting weights but more maintaining them and improving bodyweight moves.

Far too much coaching, just tell him to jump twice as high and move the rope twice as fast, then let him practice.
