- Check out David Wells’ performance in the 1998 ALCS that earned him MVP honors.
Wells won 2 games in the series by pitching deep into the game in both starts, while also exhibiting pinpoint control and keeping opposing hitters off-balance. Wells played an important role in the Yankees returning to the World Series for the 2nd time in 3 seasons.

It seemed as though once he mastered his off-speed pitches, even though he didn't have an overpowering fastball, he seemed to really progress, especially in the playoffs. From 96-98 his teams won 8 straight post season games in a row in which he pitched, with him getting 6 of the wins and 2 no decisions. The no decisions came in Game 4 of the 1996 ALDS and Game 1 of the 1998 World Series.
In 1997 and 1998, when the Yankees and Cleveland faced each other in the postseason twice, and Wells and Pettite started, Cleveland would either hit Thome 7th or they would bench him, since Thome could not hit them at all.
Cleveland would usually start Richie Sexson instead.
David Wells was born in Torrance and raised in San Diego. He was a total journeyman. BTW he finished career in Dodger blue. My hometown team.
He never should have been a journeyman. Im surprised that no team signed him long-term nor kept him long-term
I love DW. Big game pitcher. I never agreed when the team traded him for RC. I felt bad.
Yes he was a big game pitcher, but he gave the coaching staff a lot of headaches with his off the field antics. He never took training and conditioning seriously and had a very outspoken personality that rubbed some people the wrong way.
I think it was more for how he was off the field that made the Yankees want to part ways with him. He had a rubber arm and stepped up in clutch moments. At least he got his ring in 98.
Roger was 10 x better than wells
Cleveland stole 97 from the Yankees, was nice to take revenge the following year.
