- The Green Lantern oath, some DC Comics fans can recite it by heart. It's been shouted triumphantly by iconic lanterns across the decades. Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Jessica Cruz and more. Of course one cannot forget the first Green Lantern from the golden age to utter this oath, Alan Scott. However, this was not the first Green Lantern oath. Experience the first ever Green Lantern Oath here on Casually Comics!

“Which oath do you prefer?”
I doubt anyone prefers the one that doesn’t rhyme.
I do. I prefer the old one. Sounds much more...sharp and threatening.
The Golden Age oath. The Hal Jordan oath is so sing-song that you don't really realize what you're saying. The Golden Age oath requires that you concentrate on each word. Some of the other GLs from other sectors use the Golden Age oath .
Man I can't even remember it
@@samwill7259 I disagree
@@samwill7259bro thinks he’s different 🙏💀
My favorite oath is "Thing Rings, Do Your Thing!"
Hey, I heard that once on Yancey street!
Alan actually had a bunch of different oaths in the early days - they couldn’t seem to settle on a single one. (Once Bester’s was introduced, though, it was obviously the best and so they kept using it. Alan’s original oath then wouldn’t be revived until the Silver Age, when they wanted to further differentiate him from Hal Jordan.)
“Let the light of the lantern
penetrate the dark places
of ignorance and wrong,
setting all minds right
and overthrowing all servants of evil!
I shed my light upon the darkness!
Evil has no place to hide itself!
Green Lantern goes forth to conquer!”
Green Lantern 1st series #5 (Autumn 1942)
“My rays strike the darkest corner,
Banishing all wickedness!”
All-American Comics #45 (December 1942)
“Let all power and triumph be mine in whatever right I do!”
Comics Cavalcade #1 (Winter 1942-1943)
“The light of the Green Lantern
pierces darkness and mystery,
and its radiance
will strike at the heart of evil!”
Green Lantern 1st series #6 (Winter 1942-1943)
“As the green rays strike forth into darkness,
so may all black evil be exposed and driven away!”
All-American Comics #47 (February 1943)
Drew omg thank you for this great info. I pride my self on Earth 2 Golden Age heroes BUT had no idea that Alan’s Oath changed so much.👍
Some of those are pretty badass lines. Not oaths at all, no good as oaths. But BADASS.
The Golden age oaths almost sound like they are taken from the Book of Palms. Way more heavy and terrifying than Hal’s nursery rhyme!!
With power in my ring so bright,
I'll shine my light on evil's blight,
For darkness cannot stand the sight
Of the Green Lantern's radiant light!
Phil Lamarr saying the oath in the Justice League cartoon lives in my head rent free. Absolutely iconic. Still gives me chills.
The time he does it at the end of that two parter on OA vs the manhunters... Chills still today, also rent free in my head for all time.
I’m a green lantern junkie and even I didn’t know that Alan Scott said it before Hal. Thanks for adding to my well of knowledge
There was a sort of transition period in 1942, where the oath seemed to change every issue. I guess they had to work through a few tries before one stuck.
I like it when they switch up the lantern oaths on occasion. For example, Guy Gardner used a different oath in his first appearance:
"On worlds afar or scenes at home
Wherever the cause should make me roam
Always I vow to fight the good fight
To combat evil with all Green Lantern's might!"
The original one isn’t as catchy, and repeating the current one makes me feel way cooler
Different Lanterns use different oaths. There's a long running thought that the words weren't important. The ring needed a certain amount of time to fully recharge, and the oath was used as a timer.
As opposed to "Flame On!" or "SHAZEM!"
So it's more akin to singing twinkle twinkle little star while you wash your hands? Got it!
I heard that notion to. I swear I saw or read somewhere where Hal said as such.
I love the old one. Feels more powerful, to me. Frankly, the rhyming oath didn't make much sense for the Green Lantern Corps. All those Lanterns have different languages. With only 3,600 Lanterns, you have to imagine the odds of it rhyming in any other language but English were pretty low.
"A pretty powerful moment, huh?"
"Yeah. It was pretty corny how the oath rhymed, but all of us standing there together was-"
"Wait, the oath rhymes in your language?"
"Oh, right; translator. Yes, it does."
"Crazy old universe. By the way, I'm Sinestro."
"Whoa."
"What?"
"Sorry, your name just sounds like the word, "sinister" with an "o" sound at the end. It took me off guard. I'm Harold Jordan."
"Uhhh..."
"What?"
"In Korugarese, that name bears a striking resemblance to the name of a sex act popular with a very niche community, involving ingesting-"
"Call me Hal."
Pretty cool, i didn't know that!
Its simple and to the point.
In loudest din or hush profound / My ears catch evil's slightest sound!
Let those who toll out evil's knell / Beware my power, the F-Sharp Bell!
- Corps member Rot Lop Fan who comes from a species with no sense of sight.
I was coming here to post this. Good to see another... Rot Lop Fan.
And to elaborate, Katma Tui discovered RLF in a lightless void... so the concepts of light, dark, day, night, eyes, sight, color, and objects that emit light had no common reference.

I met Alfred Bester many years ago at a Con in CT. Nice guy!
I think Alan having a different oath makes sense as his power is technically not the same as the GL Corps. It comes from the Starheart, the gathered magic in all the universe contained by the Guardians millions of years ago. So it's green magic fire that's also controlled by Willpower.
In a very early Silver age GL story where Hal teams with his most familiar alien colleague, bird man Tomar-Re, Tomar's oath is identical to Alan Scott's, which is IMO more dynamic and warning-based than the tv ad jingle version that followed.
Alan Moore created a superb oath for a planet of sentient plants as part of his Swamp Thing run.
IIRC they switched it from blackest night to darkest night for awhile.
I always liked Alan using his original oath, makes him stand out even more.
My favorite? The one Black Canary used (only once) to summon a flock of...black canaries. To form a flying carpet by "interlocking their wings." Yeah, it's VERY stupid.
WHAT! When did this happen?
@@booksvsmovies Black Canary from Comic Cavalcade #25. The oath goes "Champions with midnight wing, foe of every evil thing, heed my call and arise to flight, prove the Black Canary's might!" They not only provide save her from a lethal fall, they peck through the ropes that have her trussed up after landing. It's one of those special bits of Golden Age silliness.
@@richmcgee434 Thank you! I knew it had to be Dinah Drake rather than modern Black Canary cause she went on some wild adventures in the Golden Age.
The rhyming one for sure, mostly because I adored it during the blackest night event, and there I also read the other oaths which were also super cool! but from all the corps green has the best one.
I dig Golden Age stuff.
Rhyming one. I love all the oaths.
The Orange Lantern “mine mine mine mine all mine”
I love it more or less feels like something you say before going out with a bang when you have no options left then again feels more of an energizing Battle cry.
I seem to remember early on in the Silver Age stories, some of the other alien Lanterns, such as Tomas~Re, had different variations of the oath that were germain to their characters. So when Alan Scott, along with the JSA we’re brought into the SA, it wasn’t that much of a surprise. The only reason they were changed to Hal’s was so that us poor simpleton readers wouldn’t b so confused having to work it out for ourselves. We did. But they were very much following the k.I.s.s. rule at the time.
Having said all that, I sometimes wonder about G’norrt. You know, the only GL that can be disarmed with a good belly rub and the promise of a walk in the park. Maybe a frisbee toss thrown in.
“And I shall dig up evil like a backyard bone! Let evil beware the power of G’nortt’s Green stone!”
But then I remember the high probability of him being colorblind.
Naaaaahhh. Still works.
I actually have the Green Lantern oath committed to memory.
Current one sounds cooler and is more memorable.
The old oath works better if you imagine GL saying it TO someone, instead of dramatically declaring it to the clouds.
Saw the title & knew it was you !
All in all, I think Daffy Duck said it best:
'...In blackest day or brightest night, watermelon, cantaloupe, yadda yadda, a superstitious and cowardly lot, with liberty and justice for all...!'
I prefer Jack T. Chance's oath.
"You who are wicked, evil and mean,
I'm the nastiest creep you've ever seen!
Come one, come all, put up a fight
I'll pound your butts with Green Lantern's light! Yowza."
Wasn't it also Jack T. Chance, who, when he first charged the ring, yelled "GIVE ME THE JUICE!"
I swear in a mini comic book that I have it explains that he came up with the oath after a couple of his first adventures as Green Lantern. Just wish I could remember the comic off the top of my head.
I'm fine with either one. I like that the lanterns use different oaths to fit their personalities.
The "... and I shall shed my light" oath always struck me more as the end of a pray, what with it starting with "and". Sort of like Alan is thinking something privately before speaking the oath.
I like GLC one, although I did enjoy the other Corps oaths as well.
I love Green Lantern so much, Hal is my number 1
Hal jordans oath is the best !!!
I wonder if they will ever change it from Blackest again like they did in the past to Darkest and what word they will use to replace it?
Sasha ❤🎉
Apparently, Teletoon just launched a Prime Video channel, so we can stream (some of) the DCAU in Canada now. No Batman Beyond, Static Shock, or The Zeta Project, yet. They also have some of the Cartoon Network shows that were removed from HBO Max.
There was a breif time I had this oath memorized
I actually prefer the original oath, but only for Alan Scott, it sounds more operatic to me, and it really differentiates him from the other Lanterns
Wow never knew. But I have wondered if like the green lantern corps was a thing back then and if it was the same?
I just rememeberd how Issue 10 of Green Lantern volume 2 has a story dedicated to Hal Jordan telling Thomas Kalmaku how he came up with the oath, and it was like why is this a story.
It felt like a type of story they would do with a Batman or Superman plot or character element. "We need to explain some element that doens't really need explaining because we ran out of both good plots and stupid plots for the month and we still need a story for one of the three-seven books related to this character." Not for a character whose book was either bi-monthly or eight-times-a-year at this point.
My favorite Oath is Jack T. Chance's from GLC Annual: "You who are wicked, evil and mean -- I'm the nastiest creep you've ever seen. Come one, come all, put up a fight, I'll pound your butts with Green Lantern's light. Yowza."
Definitely have to go with the revised oath as I feel it really gives off triumphant battle cry feel
Honestly the only part of Green Lantern (the movie) that didn't feel like an insult was Ryan Reynolds doing the Oath.
I enjoy some of the more obscure personalized oaths like Jack T Chance's and Rot Lop Fan.
That said, I got bored once and wrote my own oath. (Created during Kyle's era...)
Trembling hand but steady heart
Against the wicked I shan't depart
Great or small, they're all the same
They'll BURN by the power...
OF GREEN LANTERN'S FLAME!!
(Yeah, the "burn" part might be a bit "edgy", but it was the 90s.)
the Green Lantern's first appearance running on a steel beam is a straight up tracing taken of a villain from a Alex Raymond "Flash Gordon" comic daily strip panel :)
No matter how many times I fight
I will not fall at evils spite
Let Justice guide me threw the night
And blind the wicked with Gold lanterns light
Definitely the 2nd one, though I'll be honest that its pretty much only because of the DCAU Justice League & John Stewart.
I like them ALL, I would have to go with Hal’s as it was the one that was most familiar, but I wonder IF STAR SAPPHIRE had a oath.???
For Hearts Long Lost & Full Of Fright / For Those Alone In Blackest Night / Accept Our Ring & Join Our Fight / Love Conquers All With Violet Light …this is the full Oath 🤦🏾♂️ Sorry 🖖🏾
@UCIoQMxOLGN5VCAafT05KPcQ Hey, ok that’s a GREAT one, I made one up and posted it, lol I really think mine is for Carol Ferris herself.
I don’t think this one has been around too long , most likely since they came out with the different Rainbow Colors Lantern Corps … Yours wasn’t Bad & I made up a few Oaths for CasuallyComics I posted 🖖🏾
The classic one used by the Hal and others (before they changed it to "blackest" night)
Best version of the oath is obviously the third verse of ring capacity by kirby krackle.
I imagine in a different dimensional realm, the classic Green-Lantern exists in it, and I imagine he uses the classic oath to empower his ring.
I think it would be good if the classic first version of the (GREEN LANTERN) made an appearance in a DC cartoon show series someday.
In addition the wielder of the Green-Lantern ring in this realm, is a young man named ALBERT BAXTER BLUE, and I imagine in his realm scientific technology hasn’t advanced as much as it has in the other realms.
I didn't read Scott Alan, maybe random JSA
you have to talk about the lanterns cores oath
First of all I do actually like the imagery of the old oath because it actually draws on the metaphor of light and darkness while the more popular rhyming version doesnt and I see that as a deficiency. Also worth pointing out Alan Scott actually did use "Brightest Day" during the 40s run it just took time to develop. So when DC rebooted GL in the 60s the path was actually one of the few areas of continuity with the 40s version, however because of the multiverse developing subsequently they didnt want to confuse readers so now they have different paths even though the "dark evil" version was actually kind of transitional initially for Scott
I do want to correct myself since she mentions Brightest day. So apologies for not finishing the video before commenting
Sasha micro machined this one for diapers... 🤣
Go head Alan Scott!!!
Still gotta side with the well known version
“A queer light(skin)” was my highschool nickname
Salakk of the Green lantern corps alsl uses this oath instead of the popular one. There are also other renditions
Hal's oath. I respect Alan Scott and the others but Hal is my Green Lantern.
What a lot don’t know that “The Oath” can be different from. Green Lantern to Green Lantern. There is a GL that is from a mole type Himanoid species that is blind called RotTop Phan (Ok not sure if that is it exactly but the name is not that important). When indicted into GL corp the ring could not translate the concept of “green” or “Lanrern” since he was blind and had no concept of light or color. He only knew sound. When the ring went to him it turned into a Bell. He
Recited his own oath which was as follows: “ In loudest din, in hush profound.
My ears pick up evil’s slightest sound.
Let those who follow evil’s knell, Beware the power of my F sharp bell.”
His constructs were based on sound waves.
Oh I got it…Star Sapphire’s Oath…ahem…”My boyfriend is always too busy for “me”, Tells me he’s saving space sector 2814 you “see”, Oh when I hear that it makes me jealous as can “be”, BUT with the Great POWER of my purple diamond I strike BACK at the Guardians, the corps and “Thee”, THIS plus all the booty I gather from around the DC Multiverse fills my empty heart with “GLEE”. Lol
Starts out good then gets syllable muddled... but I know where you were going ;)
@@TheMsLourdes Thank You, Lol…I try…it was done tongue in cheek. 🤩💜
Do you think that we need a Dark Green Lantern Corps and that they’re powered by Envy?
I think Larfleeze has that covered ;)
I'm from both oaths.
It's hard to say where the Oath comes from
Whether it's cool, or just plain dumb
I can't think of another hero who's got one
So I guess it's just part of what makes GL fun!
Marc Guggenheim
The only reason I don't care for Alan Scott's oath is that it starts with "and". It makes it feel like he's starting in the middle of a thought.
It’s because Alan’s ring is magic based not science, however he still is highly respected by Hal, John, Kyle and Guy and amongst The Corps and The Guardians.
Also the Starheart (Alan’s source of energy) acts as an Entity but is really just magic, it’s almost exactly like the other Lantern Corps’ entity’s such as:
Ion (Will) Parallax (Fear), Adara (Hope), Proselyte (Compassion), The Butcher (Rage), Life Entity (Life), Nekkron (Death), Ophidian (Avarice), Umbrax (Ultraviolet/Cruelty), Unknown Entity (Joy/Gold Lantern Corps) and The Predator (Love. Not the creature from the 1987 film)
Not alan scott saying "queer light"
The pot calling the teapot black y'all
Golden Age Green Lantern must be the most different hero when compared to the modern ones.
There were no green lantern cirps, he was the only one.
The source of the Green Lantern's powers were magical instead of alien.
And his weakness was wood instead of the color yellow.
Wasn't there a kerfuffle about the oath being changed (or potentially changed) from "blackest night" to "darkest night" at some point? I could have sworn it happened and got some peoples' knickers in a twist a while back, but it seems to have been erased from the internet from the quick search I made for it. Or is this one of those Berenstain bears things and my memory is failing me?
I like the more modern oath, just because the language is less awkward and stilted.
Are they going to show or reference Scott Allen in the new HBO series?
The Newer one is definitely better, it resonates.
I'll wait for the Eminem remix!
I enjoy the orange lantern oath
What's mine and mine and mine and mine and mine and mine and mine not yours
It is the most long quote or cachprase in all of time
Sasha, what do you think of Marvel Comics "What The..."
In the bright stay in the blackest night nobody feels she'll escape my site those are worship people's might be one of my power green lanterns light
Even though Iike the first... I like the new oath better
Gold age green lantern was different from the green latern corp
Has Allen ever went to Oa or met a guardian?
Yes, in a few stories.
I'm pretty sure I've seen him say that he's an honourary member of the green lantern corps.
Sorry I'm more like a rhyming kind of person so I have to go with the Modern Green lantern oath
I think I prefer the old one. Sure, it doesnt rhyme. But it feels more old-timey and heroic. Just my thought though.
So obviously I prefer the recent one but I never knew about the original which is interesting because in a really terrible game called DCUO, don’t recommend btw, some of the green lantern NPCs have the dialogue “For the dark things cannot stand the light!” So that popped into my brain once seeing it and hearing it here.
Oddly, I always thought that the opening lines of the rhyming version went, "In *the* brightest day, in *the* blackest night." In the mid '70s I ran into some great DC short cartoons that were done in the early '60s, and I think it was in the Green Lantern cartoons that they had this version with "the"s in them. Still sounds better. It's like using the original "where no man has gone before," instead of the allegedly more inclusive "where no *one* has gone before." There's just no oomph in saying "one." The euphony completely evaporates.
Nope. The Filmation cartoons don't even use the full oath, much less add pointless words to it. Just the last two lines in every episode I've seen. They're up on youtube, easily checked.
That "no man/no one" grouse is some serious "old man yells at cloud" BS, and I say that despite being in my late fifties. Get over it, change happens.
Prefer the rhyming infinitely more but the original is still strong.
I prefer the version I used for my rpg GL.
Hal's, although the other is fine.

I don't like the oath. Period. I think GL's have a lot of dumb things about them.
How is it? I remember this earth from my childhood in the 60s.
I also remember three rings for the Alvin Kings under the sky seven of the door floors in the Hall of Stone, nine for mortal man, doomed die, one for the dark Lord, on the dark dark stone in the land of Mordor shadows light one ring to rule them all one ring to find them one ring together more in the darkness to buy them in the land of mortar where shadows lie of course the iPhone can’t possibly translate that correctly because the iPhone sucks
