Just to offer some clarification on flexing. The term flex came from the term of flexing your body, showing off your muscles. So flex = showing off. For the most part flexing is viewed as a negative, so no one would admit to showing off. It is mostly used by people observing someone showing off and saying they are flexing. However the newer generations use flexing proudly on themselves.
I would clarify that flexing is less showing off and more like trying to show others your strength in a way. This strength in this case is not physical. It is like how two males may stand taller when they meet each other if they are in a competitive relationship. You see this type of behavior more often when they are compeating for a girl.
"flex", basically, means "bend".
The meaning can change a little based on context (context = the situation the word is used in), but in this context, where we are using it to mean "show off", the meaning comes from the action of *bending* your arm, in order to make your arm muscles bulge/swell up.
So, when you see people bending their arms to show off how big their muscles are, this is called "flexing".
That is where this kind of "flexing" originates, but the meaning has been expanded to include not just showing off your *physical strength*, but ALSO other types of "strengths".
Other types of strengths can include things like economic strength -which you might demonstrate by showing off a very expensive car you have, or bragging about extra luxuries you have bought). Or mental strength, which you might demonstrate by showing off the high grades your kid got in school, or claiming to have scored a "genius I.Q." on some online quiz.
Basically, anything that can be perceived (seen) as "a strength" is something that people can "flex" in order to try and make other people see them as extra strong in some way or other.
So, *literally*, "flexing" just means bending.
But *figuratively* (meaning: departing from a literal use of words; metaphorical), "flexing" means showing off (or bragging about) a skill, talent, possession or ability.
Again, the slang version of "flexing" originates from the action of bending your arms to show off how big your muscles are.
flex is not talking... flex is to draw attention to something indirectly... so it's like you see someone flexing their muscles to show they're strong...
Pearl's English is phenomenal, she sounds like a native speaker. If it helps the origin of the word "flex" comes from flexing your muscles. It's the only time it's really used as a verb in English. When people go to the gym a lot they will flex their muscles in pictures to show how big their arms are for example. Other than being used as "bragging" it can also be used as "showing strength". For example if a big company is competing with a small company the bigger company would "flex it's muscle" by spending a lot more money on advertising.
Flexing can be very positive also just showing you feel 💪 strong. Literally the word comes from people building strong muscles and showing this off.

I am third-generation Chinese American, originally from California. My father is also from there, and my mother is originally from Seoul, South Korea. Growing up, I know my parents spoke positively of us before others but not in a highly boastful manner. We were like most families focused on living life and getting along well with our neighbors.
In contrast to Steven's lighthearted depictions, I prefer asking other people about who they are and letting them ask questions about myself. That approach usually yields better results in fostering friendships.
People brag about scars because the can say they brag about staying alive from how they got the scar

This may be more of an anime thing but I do see Japan tend to flex on which university they attend/accepted to. For example Getting accepted into Todai seems to be the benchmark of intellect.
While I agree If you work hard and you get perfect score then you’re allowed that flex but when it comes from a guy who is always slacking in class but still gets a higher score than you that is qualified as a flex

When the wife recognized him from Beijing Corn and he suddenly didn't flex anymore that is actually the biggest flex of all. When somebody else is doing the praising for you but you act like it's no big deal that is called humble bragging here. Imagine somebody flipping a car in front of you and he just acts like it was another peaceful Sunday morning for him, that makes you think what else he can do that actually is a big deal to him, right? So that is also a way you can flex that only works if people already think what you just did is cool already. A good example of this type of flexing in western movies is when you see the main character walk away from a big explosion without even looking back at it. It makes him look a lot cooler than if he looked back and was shocked like probably everybody else around would be.

Scars usually show that you’ve been through something
Whenever I watch Steven's "all Asian people" videos, I often find myself thinking, "Wait, no one here in Japan is like this!"
I don't know that "flex" slang is so new. I'm sure it relates to "flexing muscles' as such you are "posing" therefore you are showing off. So it starts with flexing muscles and now includes any kind of showing off. They want to demonstrate how much influence they have in the world or how important they are in society.
I definitely remember my parents doing this too!!
Now you need to watch 2set violin and the asian journey will be complete

In general, a scar shows you were in danger of possibly dying, but lived anyway. Scars on the inner side of the wrist or elbow joint dont matter in this case, because theyre probably self inflicted.

This was really lovely video, enjoyed your reaction. :) And I have to say bragging in our country is on an entirely different level compared to the image of the humble Japanese. :) I come from central Europe but as a post-communist country I think there's still a lot of deep-rooted tendency to brag that have something new/better or live better and show-off-ism to your friends/family/coworkers/acquaintances. Even we make fun of it in a few of our Czech movies. :D

Flexing derives from "flexing your muscles", showing off how buffed you are, so showing off, bragging and impress the others.
TBH, I couldn't think of an example of Japanese flexing outside of anime, lol. The term "flexing" definitely has expanded metaphorically beyond showing off one's biceps.
Showing off scars for men is kind of like showing off battle scars.

People brag about scars, because they mean "I was in danger of dying and didn't" aka "I'm hard to kill!"
And also "I'm not a wimp!", because someone will invariably tell you how they took it without blinking or screaming....
In certain cultures, especially the warrior subculture of cultures they were also seen as a mark of honour and bravery.
And in german fencing of the 19th century (culturally so up til the early 20th century) having a Schmiß/smite or fencing scar was seen as desirable and anyone who did not do this trunctuated mockery of fencing that was called the Mensur was seen as a Coward.
The Mensur or Academic fencing was just a mockery or proper fencing as the point was pretty much to get hit in a non-lethal way, whereas in proper fencing the point is to get hit. To that end all avoidance of hits, any dodging and the footwork, which is the groundwork for any proper fencing was forbidden.
It's basically two guys standing around waving their hands with swords in them.
I think at this point, you are in a snowball effect where the public will propel this to go faster and faster. You probably should start filming 20 or even 25K video so when you hit it, you'll be ready.
Have you guys reacted to Filthy Frank? He was a staple of old CZcams, kind of a 4chan hen na ojisan. The artist started CZcams in middle school in Osaka and it shows. He’s doing pop music now and the gap is crazy.

I think the thing Japanese would flex about most would be getting into a good university or company or a promotion. Prominence combined with success is what they'd most openly brag about. So things like their kid marrying into a good wealthy family would also be one.
Though for wealth in itself they're more likely to be discreet or at least present themselves with projected humble mannerisms regarding their wealth in a tastefully established generational wealthy type way, rather than a nouveau riche.
I heard Peach use あまり and I just learned thus last week and there's some interesting discussion about using あまり or あんまり. Some say あんまり sounds like your from the country side, others say it's more formal. Any chance you could give your thoughts? ありがと。

Yeah, wouldn't use the word "white washed". I would probably say more like 'americanized' or 'westernized' because they identify less with their parents' culture and more with the culture around them.
