I have 3 of them (two 10g and a 30g). I like the fact they don't need priming when you turn them back on, they're super quiet, and so far mine do a great job. I get rid of the media they come with, including the blue grate, and put sponges and ceramic rings in mine. My water is crystal clear other than the tannins I add. I buffer the flow on the one I have for my betta and his water is nice and still. The Fluval prefilter sponge fits nicely on the intake as well and looks good too.
Thanks for the feedback Barb! Sounds like a nice set-up!
I do the exact same thing. Lol
With these and the bigger versions.
I just started doing that too lol. I bought some ceramic rings, a sponge and put it in with my old media cartridge so the good BB can pass to my sponge
This is my fav brand of hang on back filter. I'm running 4 of those right now.
I had no idea! Cool that they are working for you. 😀
I have had fish during 20 years and tried several filter brands and Aqueon filters are the best. Period.
Glad you are feeling much better and back to business. 👍🐟🐟🐟
Thank you! Yep, voice is back in business. 😀
I use this filter on my 20 gallon and I love it. Great video!
Good to hear!
Nice review Jason. I’ll be interested in your 3 month follow up! Glad to see you’re feeling better.
Thanks man!
This filter came with our 29 gallon tank. Additionally I added a Aqueon QuietFlow 10 on the opposite end of the tank and they are working flawlessly and have been for months now. Very pleased with them for the price. Also the 29 gallon does have a large sponge filter as well and the air pump for the sponge filter is louder than both of the aqueon filters put together lol. I put a pre filter intake sponge on both of the aqueon filters. Excellent review as always
Thanks for sharing. I have found it to be very quiet as well!
This is my favorite filter, super quiet. I adjust it of course with 2 sponges, Purigen and stone media for good bacteria. Water is so clean.
Cool! Thank for sharing your experience.
I don’t buy filter pads anymore. I just use a sponge in the intake as well as the inside. After a cleaning I use pillow fiber stuffing for a bit to clear up quickly. Remove it and have no problems. I don’t do water changes because I have house plants. Just top off. When I do have to clean my sponges I just squeeze the sponge into my plants. My peppers are hot now. Fun stuff. Thanks for sharing sir! Happy you feel better. Merry Christmas!
Nice set-up. I've thought about a set-up similar to yours. I'd like to test for the accumulation of substances not used by plants that may build up in the water column (if any). How long have you been running your tanks that way? Have a great Christmas as well!
Hi Jason. Thanks for the information about these filters
Thank you! Appreciate you watching. 😀
I use this one on my 10 gallon betta tank. I also have the aquaeon 75 for my 55 gallon. They both are awesome. Knock on wood no complaints.
Good to know!
I really enjoy your filter reviews, even for filters I do not own. Looking forward to your in-depth review after usage on this particular filter. Maybe one day you can review a seachem tidal if you wouldn’t mind. Thank you.
Definitely going to add that to the list!
Great review! You make a really good point about the filter cartridge as well.
Thanks Lisa! Looking forward to your next 10 things video coming out soon. 😀
I’ve got one running on a planted guppy fry tank with a couple sponge filters, and after replacing the filter pad with my own media, I think they are excellent. Put an intake sponge on it, cram some filter floss or similar media onto the little blue barrier, and let it go. Starts up no problem. Doesn’t need to be primed. Still quiet after a few months, and does the job that my sponge filters can’t.
Sounds like some nice mods!
Thanks for sharing! Great video as always 🐟 🍃
This is the HOB filter I use for my Planted Nano Betta tanks. 😊It does the job well.
Good to hear! Thanks for sharing your experience.
Late to the party but I'm running a few of these, the 55-75 model @400GPH, and two smaller ones. I run ceramic media in bags stuffed down in, and in one I managed to get the "bio grid" to work with mini bio balls. They do restart smooth upon maintenance or a power outage, and are still whisper quiet after 2 years of daily use. I highly recommend them, and like them almost as much as my emperor 400's. Still not a canister filter but they do the job well
Appreciate you sharing!
Great review, thus far. I've used them over the years, as they are a staple with kits. I do like that they have in water motors so restart after power outages. I currently have one left, on a 29 that was a kit. Interested in the long term performance.
That's how I've gotten them in the past as well. They come with the kits. I didn't have any issues with them that I can remember but it's been a while. 😃
You can use the marineland 350 and put it on the right or left side of the tank which makes a slow current in the water column, in which i think would be great in a 20 long stocked with baby bristlenose plecs, but on the other hand you cant put a lid or you have to modify the lid in order to make it work
I love product reviews!
Cool! 😀
Have that on my feeder tank works great.
Good to know! Thanks for sharing
I had a larger model on a 75 gal and the propeller kept getting stuck. I discarded the carbon filter and use only floss, so that part worked fine. I replaced it with a different brand.
It's a self priming pump! And there should be another small square mechanical on the end of the outflow.
ty! going to get this on monday. the filter i have now drives me nuts its so loud
They are a good filter for the money I run a couple of them but definitely and aquaclear guy you can hot rod those filters pretty easy I over have had success with glad your feeling better bud
Thanks for sharing! All better now. : -)
Good video I love my aqueon 75 it works great I have sponges in it instead of the cartridges and filter floss
Good to know. Thanks for sharing!
No problem great channel you have great content I like it A bit better than my Marineland emporor 400 which I loved for the longest time
Love your review
Thank you!
I bought 15 of these on clearance for $8.00 each a few years ago. I just bought them because they were cheap. They don't hold enough media for any serious application. But...I do use them when I occasionally need to run chemical filtration on a tank temporarily. I just throw a media bag full of carbon or Purigen or whatever I need to use on a case by case basis. They will actually sit on most any small to medium tank up to and including a 125. On the larger tanks they just sit up a little higher but they work fine. Great to have as an emergency back up or in addition to a sponge filter for mechanical filtration. For mechanical filtration I use a cut down AQ sponge. As for restarting...sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. LOL!! Thanks for the review.
Thank you Gerald! Ya, they are awfully narrow and it's something to consider. You got a great deal though! : -)
They work, they are self priming. Overall a good filter. the only issue I have with the Aqueon is the pump dumps the water on top of the well of the filter, inside the box. The more expensive filters in the HOB realm always pump the water to the bottom of the well of the filter forcing the water up through the media vice the Aqueon flows right over it.
I agree - the more water flow through the media, the better the filtration will be!
The impeller/motor hangs inside the tank so, it is self priming. No need to fill the back prior to plugging in. Like you, I always replace the media with home made after the first one gets dirty.
Very good point! I was thinking during water changes if the water level goes below there could be issues?
Great review mate, I'm really interested in doing a price / quality comparison between US and UK filters
Interesting idea!
Hey Jason. I bought this filter except it was supposedly the new and improve version with the LED light top. I was in a hurry for a filter and couldn't wait for a Tidal to show up and it was on sale at the local Petco. The only thing that I like is that the pump in in the tank and self primed instantly and I like that it is narrow as it is on a desk. Now the negatives for the new and improve version. The flow tube doesn't expand like on the old one and is somewhat short in a 20 gal. quarantine tank. Would probably work much better on a 20 gal. long. I don't think it has enough flow for a larger tank. There is NO flow control so what you get out of the box for flow is what you get. It is also the noisiest of my filters. Even a cheap TopFin that I have on a 10gal is much quieter and it doesn't compare to to my Tidal 55's for noise. I have hot rod the filter media and put a pre-filter on the intake nozzle. We will see how well it does with time. Happy New Year to you and yours!
Appreciate you sharing!
I like these hob they are not only quiet but they work well I don’t use the pads any more use a sponge and floss
Thank you for sharing your experience!
I've been using the Quietflow HOBs on many of my tanks for the last few years.
There are a few tricks you can do to modify them so that you don't need to use the cartridges and add bio-media to them.
Glad they are working for you!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I retired my last one in use about 2 weeks ago when I switched my 20 gallon tank over to one of the small Eheim canister filters.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics now that I've had a chance to watch the video (no Wi-Fi access at work), first thing I noticed was that is the old filter design.
They had some design updates several years ago that changed the intake tube, lid, and the blue thing (technical term 😉) at the output.
I had a Quietflow 30 on my 20 gallon high tank for almost 2 years plus a sponge filter (I follow the 10x tank size guideline on GPH).
My favourite feature was that they start without needing to be primed and are thin.
I tweaked mine and used my own filter media, plus added Seachem Matrix and Fluval/Hagen bio-max in it.
It served me well until my panda cories decided to breed at a rate that made my endlers jealous.
They work well when you use your own media, whether it's floss or course sponges stuffed in the cartridge area.
Thanks for the feedback! Ya, they have a newer one with an LED and the blue thing has a sponge. They still sell this one too
Keep up with the good work
Thank you! I will try. : -)
Jason another great video and thank you so much from a new guy to the hobby. Just wondering if you did the follow-up video to this filter? If you haven't done a video can you please let me know how it has held up because I am interested in getting one. From your other videos, it seems like the ability to restart after a power outage is important, does this one restart on its own? Thanks man for all the videos!
It has worked really well - no complaints at all.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics did you do the follow up? I'm looking to keep using this filter but no longer using the charcoal cartridge
If you had you pick for a 29 gallon community tank which HOB filter system would you use? I'm leaning toward the marineland with a added medium....
Tasha TakeATimeOut If I just had a 29 I would go with a HOB. I’ve been enjoying both the Marineland, but also the Seachem Tidal lately.
I prefer to pay the little extra for Seachem Tidal 55. Better filter and easy to add filter media plus it is self priming.
I would not use on my bigger tanks though
I need a little bigger HOB filter, but only for a while (like two months). I need a smaller filter, because my 125 Gallon tank will be about 1/5 full during a long planting stage. After that, my tank will go a little higher for medium size plants. About 5 months after setup, it will go full size. I can always use the HOB on a tank for the filter size. There are many options to go with. I can use the regular canister, but with a minimal flow. Decisions, Decisions?
The Marineland 350s are super cheap right now on amazon!
Watched your video to find out that my filter (from a 29 gal Aqueon kit) did not come with the extension tube pieces on the intake. 2 African Dwarf frogs later...
I just ordered a Seachem Tidal 35 for my 29gal long because the Aqueon 20 LED Pro that came as part of the tank kit just didn't seem to move enough water and is NOT adjustable (as is the Tidal 35). Do you have the link for the follow-up to this filter please? Thanks bud!!
Good video an info
Thank you!
I use a lot of these of various sizes. The only issue Ive ran into is that they are terrible about restarting after a while in a tank with sand.
Thanks for the info Audri! I will be keeping an eye on that as well.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics neither of mine will start now after several months of use. Do you have any repair tips for them?
As someone who has always used quiet flow. The filter itself is quiet but where the sponge is, it makes a loud and annoying water trickling noise.
I agree that the front step down media block will create a a bit of a waterfall or trickling sound, which I don't mind, but wouldn't that action be causing better aeration and gas exchange while offering more surface area for beneficial bacteria?
Hi. For a 20 gallon tank - would you say the quietflow 20 is better, or the quietflow 10?
The 20 for sure
any suggestions as to how to modify the flow rate? i currently have a six-month-old betta in a twenty-long planted tank, and the flow is too strong for her.
For hang on back filters without an adjustable flow that can be really hard. Sometimes a pre-filter intake sponge can help a little (especially as it gets a little clogged).
So I learned something interesting the other day while researching my similarly-designed HOB filter. That big flat rectangle blue piece is supposed to work as a biological media insert. I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether you think beneficial bacteria would actually build up effectively on a piece of holey blue plastic.
Well, in theory anything with surface area and sufficient O2 will grow beneficial bacteria. So yes, it will help, but there's also not a ton of surface area there.
Thanks!
I'm looking for a hang on filter and i have watch all your videos on hang on. I'm working on setting up a 20 gallon. So its been 11 months since you posted this does it still work or you didn't use it on anything.
It's been a very quiet filter and has worked well.
Well only thing I can say is the filter cartridge gets clogged fast. I use them until the red light notifies me to change it, then I replace it with a custom cut filter pad. The one you can buy a whole sheet for $7 and cut it as needed.
I do the same : -)
What about the amount of space for bio rings ect.?
Hi Ray - it's pretty cramped and something I will probably address in the full review next time.
Have you done one on the 75 ?
No, I just did one on the 30 though.
I have the 75 for my 65g..can't say I Like it that much..if it stops its hard to get it too start again..we have to take it apart..the impaler gets stuck all the time..its quiet and it works fine with my home made medium.. I have had it for 10 months..since then I added a 45g sponge filter mostly because of the mess the Cory food makes when the guppies eat it..I am going to replace it if I have to keep taking it apart..we put Vaseline on the impaler next water change will tell me if that worked..
Would love to hear if that works.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics well you did not have long to wait..we had a 1second power out..and this was the only filter not to reboot..we would of been in bed ..I think a phone call to the company is in order..I will let you know what they say..
Thanks for the feedback!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I am just glad to get my experience out to a larger group of fish keepers...my channel was mostly for honest Disney reviews..but had to put that on hold so fish got there first...😀😀😀
Intetesting video.
Thank you!
I have to agree with you dude. Aqueon might not be the highest quality but their filters do the trick and they are SILENT. I've had one running for a few months and it doesn't matter if it's dirty or not, the thing stays silent. Quick Tip: Don't use the carbon pads, remove those and full the HOB with small pieces (quarter sized) of lava rock. Also add a pre-filter. I have crystal clear water. Fish look like they're flying in air. Monthly cleaning in tank water (once it's in the bucket) during water changes.
Nice tips - thanks for sharing!
Is this quiet enough for my bedroom my current one is too loud
I had one in my bedroom and never heard it.
Yeah if you are not a light sleeper it's great
Would you suggest a top fin filter or a aqueon
I lean towards the quiet flow out of the two.
Prime Time Aquatics ok thank you
Waiting for long time review....
I actually took the filter down because I didn't need it anymore, but it worked well the entire time we had it up and running.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics ok
The pump is submerged that's why there is no need for priming
The motor is in the tank, therefore you do not need to prime the filter before starting it up.
Yep, that is a huge benefit.
If they won't hang on a bigger tank they would be useless to me because I usually use those smaller filters without any media and use them to run pothos in the tank. I put the stems in the filter and let them grow wild. All that moving water with the nutrients makes for fast growing pothos. Once the roots start, the party really starts.
Cool idea! Ya, it wouldn’t fit on my 40 breeders
thank you for complaining about the stupid cartridge filters after 10 years comming back to the hobby, people like you have saved me more money than is believable, BTW i recommend howing how to use foam intakes for hangon back, i have seen many youtubers do it but honestly the more who do it the better because not all your audiences watches king of diy or aquarium coop and all the others, i love inventory king also btw, but i know im not listing them all lol
Thank you for being here!
I bought one for my ten gallon tank didn't care much for I thought the flow was to slow ,so I replaced it with a aqua clear filter
Thanks for sharing Mike!
These aren’t so bad, but Aqueon has the most expensive inserts! 2-3 x the price of other brands, and they make sure you can’t get another brand (theirs have a specific notch).
If you don’t use cartridges, it’s definitely worth it!
Thanks Heather! Ya, I'm not a big fan of the cartridges either.
Is it just me, or is the Aqua Clear's media basket really overrated considering the insant access you would have to your filter floss in a common filter.
I personally haven't had good luck with Aquaclear filters (although I know many people who have).
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I don't have power outage issues, but the fact that yours shut off because of a flicker worries me.
I again make the same criticism of this filter as I make of all(?) other modern HOB filters. 1) a grossly inadequately sized media box that denies aquarists the benefit of a large biologically active media bed. 2) Con job, expensive, filter cartridges that compound the issue above - they do not provide enough media area in an already small media holder box. And the alleged chemical filtering of such a little bit of carbon does nothing. 3) This filter continues the issue of releasing the filtered water in the same immediate area as the filter intake instead of providing a directional output that would set up a broad circulation pattern in the tank.
These HOBs, in spite of their quiet, easily serviced motors, actually lag behind filter designs seen in the 50s up through the advent of these modern designs. If I could ONLY use a modern HOB, I would use it with polyester fiber and a Poly Filter cut up into as many pieces as I could get to fit. I'd have to concentrate on mechanical and chemical filtration and frequent partial water changes due to lack of space for an adequate biological colony.
Plastic is cheap. They could give us a media box three or four times the size for a couple of bucks more. And an adjustable return sprout for $2 more.
All very good points indeed!
I like this channel but I couldn't disagree more about Aqueon which I MUCH prefer to Marineland filters which are garbage. I agree about using alternate filter media and I do that, but the overall performance and water flow of Aqueon is really good for the price and I think this is a little unfair.
This may wind up being a quality filter long term. My only point was the plastics used and the external construction isn’t as robust as the other filters I mentioned. Hopefully, it holds up well!
Between the aqueon, marineland and those filter set ups from Walmart I'd stay away from all three. Super cheap unreliable and breaks way to easily, not to mention the lack of surface media like mentioned. I miss the old whisper h.o.b. filters and aquaclear before fluval took them over. Why mess with a good thing? Just like any other aquatic related item you get what you pay for, I'd rather spend the money the first time instead of nickel and diming me to death over a short period from cheap equipment.
I bought my wife one of those aqueon column tanks couple years back, just knowing from past failures these filters are complete junk I went ahead and bought her an aquaclear along with that new tank, and of course we set up that aqueon on another tank for giggles. It lasted on a very low stocked 20 tall for almost three months before the impeller went out like I figured it would. We'll see how long this one lasts.
Thank you for the feedback! Always so valuable when people share their experience!
wow you have no idea how this filter works the blue cage isnt just the filter holder its the bio media as is the quiet flow should read the directions been useing this filter for years
Any surface on the filter (and tank for that matter) is a place for microbes to grow.
