    Great tutorial. I would only add that gloss black makes a great base coat for metallic paints. I do think a weathered 3PO is easier to achieve unless you're willing to pay for vacuum metalizing.

  • @madcowrebel4216
    @madcowrebel4216 Před 4 lety +2

    Good video but just some things you should know. You should have used a flat black coat then build up some clear gloss then polish. Not gloss white. Metallics work much better on a black base. You also should have used a mini spray gun at least not an airbrush. Airbrushes are not intended for large surface areas and cause overspray; that's why you got a rough texture: you couldn't keep the area consistently wet with paint. Another thing is that it is possible to regain the mirror shine after the tint and clear, in fact you did it already in the video. You must simply spray on a few layers of a good clear from a spray can or gun (not an airbrush) and polish the clear. Hope this helps

    • @HappyTrooperDotCom
      @HappyTrooperDotCom  Před 4 lety +2

      Mad Cow Rebel i tried gloss black as an undercoat and it was too dark. Gloss white gave me the tone that I wanted after the chrome and tint was applied. I used what I had at my disposal. Thanks for the tips.

  • @droid_protocol_official

    Oh ps. After using your Tamiya colour you should use a 2k clear coat.. It restores the optical clarity lost after the water based acrylics are applied. I learned that from Gordon Tarpley 😜

  • @jcgardeaa
    @jcgardeaa Před 4 lety +1

    The color of the undercoat I think it is matter of preference.
    You could well go with black, grey, or white. Black might read more as brass or bronze, than gold. White might be too bright for others.
    Watch GordonTarpley’s channel for different methods of chrome finishing 3PO, he gets impressive results with all-clad silver and a little patience.

    Thanks for the great videos. I have learned a lot from you. I have a couple of questions please. I am 3D printing a complete C-3P0. I have watched all of your videos where you apply a gold finish to props in various ways. I do have an airbrush and have used Alclad Chrome before. Which method do you recommend I use for the finish on my 3P0? Once the prints are prepped should I go with a gloss black spray paint, covered in Alclad Chrome and then covered in your Tamiya yellow/red mixture (this would be quite expensive for a complete droid) or do you think I could get away with a Gloss white spray paint and then followed up with Rust oleum Gold and then a gloss clear coat?
    Also, what video editing software do you use? I love your videos!

      If you are on Facebook, check out the C-3PO BUILDERS page. You will have to request to join the private group. The admin: Jason Street, is in the UK and he sells head kits. You could also reach out to CZcamsr: GordonTarpley he has a great channel on C-3PO costuming and may know where you can get a 3PO head. Good luck :)

    Is there a reason why you started with a clear coat from a spray paint can after the white base coat but then later used your airbrush to put a final clear coat on? Couldn't you have used the spray paint? Can clear coat at the end as well?

    Hi this tutorial is great. However, I'm horrible at the sanding process & no matter how hard a try, I always get print lines showing no matter what. I started with 220 on my part & then when most of the bumps and such we're smoothed, I moved onto 400 grit. There were no gaps on my part so I went to primer. It still has print lines visible! How do you manage to cover the up so well?

    • @HappyTrooperDotCom
      @HappyTrooperDotCom  Před 5 lety

      HackinSpock Hello, thank you for watching. I feel your pain. Getting a smooth surface requires a lot of work. I have to use spot putty or plastic wood filler. After applying it, i sand it down with 220 or 320 and then 400. I’ll hit it with another coat of filler. If i still see lines, i apply more putty. Its a long, arduous process, but your hard work will be rewarded. I’ve been using the plastic wood filler more frequently. Its less toxic, cheaper, you get more, and it sands down nicely. Keep at it, you’ll get there! :)
