    16 people downvoted what is probably the most profoundly monumental and influential dance performance in history. (Btw Michael called him within days and requested that Jeffrey teach him the "back slide" which Michael or somebody re-named the "moon walk" (also btw: Bill Bailey was the first to do this at least the 1st captured by video) This solo performance has indeed left an indelible mark on my brain. Truly "a night to remember!"

    It still floors me in when I see this, and incredible to know that it was this iconic dancer Jeffrey Daniel who invented the 'back-slide' which MJ re-named the ''Moon Walk''..!!!

    • @Deereevangelist
      @Deereevangelist Před 10 měsíci +5

    • @FLeigh12
      @FLeigh12 Před 10 měsíci +5

      @@Deereevangelist --- Well for sure, it was NOT an MJ invention. The articles you linked to said Michael Jackson only ''popularized'' it, not invented it -- but only after Jeffrey Daniel taught him it.!!! --- Jeffrey was hired by MJ to teach him all those iconic moves and used him on many music videos like 'Criminal', etc which Jeff choreographed. ----- And yes, I already saw Bill Bailey in 1943 do a 'similar' version of the Moonwalk. So, whatever history declares as fact, it was JEFFREY DANIEL who taught Michael that move years later. MJ even called Jeff after the tv appearance and said he didn't think it went that well. --- JEFFREY DANIEL CALLED HIS MOVE '' THE BACKSLIDE '' - Michael Jackson changed the name.... and the rest is history. Everyone first saw Jeff do it on TOP OF THE POPS..!!!

    • @Deereevangelist
      @Deereevangelist Před 8 měsíci +1

      @FLeigh12 Since the link shows that the variations of the same dance were filmed, thst means that everybody knew about the dance from the movies that had dancers doing that dance for a very long time before Jeffrey was born. So know he did not introduce it to the world. However he is a great choreographer and dancer.

    This performance in 1982 introduced to the UK, the art of Popping. Jeffery Daniel had already been an established popper in California where he danced with notable other popper such as Poppin Pete, Geron 'Casper' Candidate, Boogaloo Shrimp, Robot Dane, and Suga Pop. I believe he became Michael Jackson's choreographer and was feature in the 'Smooth Criminal' video. Jeffery Daniel was one heck of a streetdancer and because of him, the UK got to see how popping looked like.

    Ironically this kind of dance and funk was ostracized in the place where it mostly began, in the L.A. area. Jeffery Daniels says that boogaloo was begun by a few people in Long Beach, which is in L.A. County. This kind of dance was underground and mostly unheard of until after the summer of 1983 when the movie Flashdance sparked the breakdancing craze. Of course, it all became ubiquitous and boring because that's what happens when Hollywood gets a hold of something and it becomes mainstream. Prior to that there was a mystique about this kind of dance. It wasn't even associated with hip hop in the L.A. area because that word just wasn't used. The only places you could see people dance like this was in places like downtown L.A. and Venice Beach. I remember first seeing this kind of dance for the first time in downtown L.A. right before my eyes. It was fantastic and mysterious. The music was great too. It was so rare to see this that there's only one video of guys popping in Venice Beach in 1981. By late 1983, it became commonplace and even the music became blasé.

    It was not Jeffery but Boogaloo Turbo Shrimp who trained MJ for the moonwalk. However, Jeffrey was the original choreographer of Bad Music video. In which we also see Spike Lee. Turbo (Michael Chambers) and Late Bruno Falcon, were not credited for their parts of grooming Michael for his famous music videos. Late great Bruno Falcon was the original choreographer of Smooth Criminal music video. Turbo was responsible for MJ's change of Moonwalk from shorter to longer strides in 1995 MTV live on stage performance of Bellie Jean and Dangerous song mix.. Even the name "Moonwalk" was from another type of antigravity move where one seems walking on the moon. This backside and popping steps made Michael jackson a household name as he was a famous pop singer. Neither Jeffrey nor Turbo were credited. We grew up in India thinking it was only MJ who had invented such dance moves until we saw these dancers interviews. They were genius at their best. At 53, I'm still dancing and making short videos as a tribute to such great art. May God bless Boogaloo Shrimp and Jeffrey Daniel.

    That backslide/moonwalk was done waaay back in the movie "Cabin In The Sky". One guy did it the actual backslide, and "Bubbles" did a standing in one place.
    variation of it.
    MJ named his Chimp after the famous dancer Bubbles. MJ also copied Bubble's hat tilt. When Bubbles dances up some stairs, at the end of his dancing his does the hat tilt.
