This is hilarious and incredible. So what happens when we provide better food for more money? Will they develop tastes and save their quarters to bring to the "fancy" boxes? And will humans start trying to figure out what crows like, to try and attract more loose-change-gathering crows? What if ten years from now there are a series of brands, complete with eye catching logos and advertisements exclusively for crows? I don't know about you but I want to live in that world

You really should leave that out there without money and see if crows actually do bring you quarters. Not to try and make money, which is funny. But considering one of them took one of the quarters, it might recognize it as something worth keeping to get food later. Meaning if it sees food in there, but no quarters, it might find one later in like a gutter or something, and associate it with that machine, and bring it. It definitely wouldn't forget about the machine, these things remember where they hide thousands of different items over hundreds of miles for up to like 9 months or something.
I think it would be an amazing experiment.

This type of thing actually involves a 4 step training process.
First, the machine is made available, and it randomly gives out nuts.
Second, once the crows are used to that, the machine stops giving out nuts, and requires a coin be put in (With coins regularly placed near the slot of the machine so crows will figure out how to get the machine to dispense food)
Third, once the crows are used to that they start placing the coins farther away from the machine to encourage the crows to gather the money.
Fourth, once they're used to that, they stop providing money at all, so the crows have to go out and find money to put into the machine.

    2. The arm swing and coin hole would be placed in the middle to simplify the design and line it up to the food chute, when the arm moves to the other side it will jolt the food down the chute.

I don't know if you've ever observed them closely, but it looks like you're dealing with only a single family group, or clan. Turns out, if you find intersecting territory, you can increase the exposure to different crows in your area. I currently am observing on a regular basis when I feed my local crow clans, something to the tune of nearly five to six different family groups, or clans, working in close order with an apparent hierarchy in the system of feeding.
Junior members of the same family group generally recognize senior members and refuse to eat before these senior members do, but members from opposing families will often square off, or avoid interaction. A weaker clan's crows however often get bullied off of food. I have yet to identify how this is done, but I assume it has something to do with posture and initial body language and calls.
A typical distinguishing mark or call that identifies higher-caste crows in the local system I've observed is their use of a long and low call. It sounds like "Waugh" stretched out over several yards of flight as higher-caste crows move to land among lower caste crows. It's apparent from the reaction of these crows that they do not challenge these other crows and will often back away from nearby food until the high-caste crows leave, and then they return to regular feeding.
In the event you witness this... set out multiple feeders about five to ten feet apart. This is how I encourage lateral feeding of crows. Higher caste crows will generally get 'dibs' on more heavily desired or favored areas, so keep that in mind. If they get the idea that one machine gives out more than another, they may 'claim' that machine as their own.

You can give them a daily salary and they can buy their own food using the machine. I wonder if they will budget and save money to use for later.

It looks like the site for the kit is down, if you're no longer going to sell kits, could provide a PDF scan of the kit assembly guide and also the BOM for the electronics and other parts?

    • @4STEVEJOY34
      @4STEVEJOY34  Před rokem

That would not help as I invented and made 3D printed parts, that are crucial to the build.

@@4STEVEJOY34 First of all, than you very much for taking the time to reply to me and on top of for it being on a 8 year old video!
Would it be possible to make the parts/STLs open source? or even the whole project? is it still possible to buy kits to an i extent? I have a interest electronics but have little to no clue about the parts themselves.
Moreover, I was really intrigued about the electronic behind accepting the coin/object which I can assume then triggers another electrical mechanism in the build. But heck, I dont even know how to properly power the system without risk of getting shocked cause it looks like you AC powered it.
