    • One of the things I absolutely love about this band is that Justin Trosper (guitarist/vocals) plays in a way I have never heard any other guitarist play. Sometimes Sonic Youth, Nirvana (in the early material), This Heat, Fugazi, and Swans appear as primary influences, but they're churned up and spat out in this subtly unique way.
    • Terminus's first section is unsettling/uneasy in a way only Trosper and co. could write. Vern Rumsey (bassist/sometimes vocals - rest in peace) was often the rhythmic *and* melodic line of the band.
    • Leaves was self-produced by Unwound in their own studio, with very minimal help (pressing the record button) from Phil Ek and Kip Beelman in engineering. I believe Steve Fisk only contributed keys, despite producing the rest of their albums.
    • Yes, that is a cello and a Rhodes piano! It's the Rhodes that lends the credits feel to the song. The cellist was a session player.
    • "Are other Unwound albums like this?" No… and yes. New Plastic Ideas is a substantial leap in frenetic aggression and angularity, and a few steps back in intricacy and ethereality. That doesn't make it any worse! Even that early on, hints of the intricacy, exploration, and pacing of Leaves would appear on New Plastic Ideas with songs like "Arboretum" (a live staple during their Leaves tour) and "Abstraktions". That's what makes Leaves so much more interesting and impressive in context of their discography: amidst all the noise, youthful vigor, and nervous energy of NPI , Fake Train, The Future of What, Repetition, etc. the sensibilities of Leaves were always lurking beneath the veneer. Yet, Leaves feels like a deep sea dive past that veneer rather than a band-aid peel, if that makes sense.
    • The stresses of touring the northeastern US during 9/11 combined with Vern's alcohol abuse and poor communication skills broke the band apart for good. Sara Lund (drummer) revealed in a recent interview that Vern's health had declined to the point where an Unwound reunion and subsequent tour was just not possible. They played their last show and broke up on April Fool's day, 2002.
    • The density and austerity of Leaves on the surface make it somewhat intimidating to revisit; it is really meant for a certain headspace or season (autumn or winter, for sure). Once the familiarity settles in, it is as comforting as hot cocoa (with whiskey?) on a November evening.
If it isn't already obvious, I deeply love this band (and am a little tipsy) and consider Leaves to be a monumental album, achievement in rock music, whatever. The only album I have heard that matches its discordant and autumnal/wintry feeling is Women - Public Strain. Try "Eyesore" or "Narrow With the Hall".

I could not get into this album for years until one day one song clicked and then they all made sense to me. I was so used to their more abrasive heavier sound that this album felt so removed from other earlier albums. At least it felt that way until I paid attention to they way they slowly evolved to this sound. This track has to be one my brain really had to work to understand what’s happening and why.

Immediately tapped on the CZcams notification when I saw this video pop up. You need to listen to this whole album. Definitely one of the best post rock albums ever.

Other Unwound albums are much more classic post-hardcore/noise rock, Leaves Turn Inside You was their swan song and most experimental album and it's definitely not easy to get into the first time

I’m glad the unwound community has found a new hub to talk about this literal godsend of a record here. If there’s anyone who can give me recommendations for music this intricate and transcendent that still carries rock and punk influences my i.e Spiderland, Laughing Stock, Any swans album rlly. That sort of thing. I’d be eternally grateful

My favorite unwound album is the Future of What but that album is A LOT more heavier and noisier then Leaves Turn Inside You. Generally most of their earlier work is more noise rock then LTIY (except for maybe challenge for a civilized society which is another amazing album) but all of their music is just amazing, such a rewarding band to get in to imo. I would listen to One Lick Less next that's one of my favorites off of LTIY

Why were you hating White Light / White Heat and on RYM you have it at 4.5/5 LOL afraid of giving it a lower rate much?

It's a highly impressive album. Just because I don't listen to it often doesn't mean I don't appreciate its merits.

Why are the only reactions to Unwound their not so good songs? Disappointing. December is a way better cut off of this album.
