- This week we are extremely excited to welcome UConn men’s head basketball coach Dan Hurley to the show! JJ and Tommy open the show breaking down what LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and the Lakers need to do to in order to upset Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, and the Denver Nuggets in the 2-7 matchup in the first round. Then, Hurley joins to share what he’s learned from winning back-to-back NCAA national championships, who some of his biggest coaching influences are, and the legacy basketball family he grew up in with his dad, Bob Hurley (Hall of Fame coach) and Bobby Hurley (former Duke point guard, lottery pick, and ASU head coach). Hurley also shares what intangible characteristics he looks for in recruits, the teams and leagues his UConn offense is inspired by, and so much more. Let’s go!

As a UConn fan I have probably watch every Hurley interview and this is definitely one of if not the best I have seen.
Same- kudos to JJ for asking different questions to get Danny to open up.
UConn fan here, so glad you could get this one done. Keep it up JJ 💪
I'm a freshman at UConn and this stretch has been awesome as a new student.
go research jim calhoun, he is the greatest coach of all time.
@@TheNmd828boooooomerrrrrrr
Geno is goat
@@TheNmd828 I understand Calhoun still has an office at UCONN, is he the genius behind how the program keeps getting great coaches? There must be someone at the top that makes UCONN run. I don't think any other school has won three titles under three different coaches in less than twenty years.
Dan’s UConn teams, with their “layered” offensive sets and schemes, play an aesthetically “beautiful” style of basketball. In this era of NIL money, the Transfer Portal and the One-n-Dones, Dan Hurley has demonstrated that “teamwork” basketball is not only still relevant, but can actually dominate at even the top tier of college hoops. 1983 UConn Grad - wishing Coach Dan continued success in the future.
Agreed! Great comment
The consistency on this channel is widely impressive
Great interview. Hurley is one of a kind. True genius and hard worker
Basketball aside JJ is a great interviewer
What else does he interview about?
@@KingChavo700 There’s a way of asking questions in an interview to make it flow that JJ has where he could be an interviewer about anything
Dan Hurley really care about the kids. That’s dope
Hurley reminds me alot of Eric Spoelstra. They're both innovative basketball minds who think outside the box. When Spo talked to Chip Kelly in 2011 about the spread offense he translated those principles into new offensive sets/spacing concepts that changed the way basketball was played. Spo unlocked their potential to win multiple championships and Hurley has done the same thing with UConn. He incorporates similar principles, and european concepts via off-ball screening and ball movement/motion within their sets, theres nothing like it in college basketball.
Hurley made JJ almost cry with that answer about how it feels to win.
Awesome interview! I hope Dan will be at the helm at UConn for a very long time!
Great show. I swear, HBO should do a college basketball dramedy series based on Danny Hurley. He’s not just a great coach, but he’s just flat out interesting and funny. Plus his wife is a riot too. So lucky to be a UConn fan, alum and resident near the campus. Jason Sudekis should create a new series about a hoops coach like Hurley.
I was one of those kids playing while Danny and Bobby were dribbling. Love ya Dan. Jersey City for life.
Lets go huskies, Rocking my championship gear proudly.
New haven CT born and bread
I'd like to hear more about Bill Murray's son at UCONN, supposedly he's a genius at analyzing film. I think Hurley has given him a lot of credit for his success.
He’s the one bringing in those European schemes and doing all the scouting and implementing of the offense
JJJJJJJJJJJ been on a heater baby
Good Job JJ, That was a great. U talked about the game and him the reasons . I love it. Great Job .
I remember being a freshman at Elon University and seeing JJ around campus (I think with Daniel Ewing, but not positive) prowling for the good looking ladies that were lacking at Dook.
Love JJ, especially after watching a documentary on him and seeing his tight knit family.
Coach Hurley’s Team building and basketball tactics at UConn reminds me of Klopps Team Building and Tactics at Liverpool… Just absolutely relentless the whole game, built with players that before arriving may not be heralded but then leave absolute legends!
Hurley wouldn’t lose to Palace
To be a great coach you usually need to be a great man (at least these days). In this context, listening to this interview is especially insightful. Great work JJ
This video made me a JJ Redick subscriber. So well articulated and delivered. I'll be diving into the rest of the content on this channel as well as future videos.
Legendary
Really great interview. Thank you. Life lessons!
You’re goated JJ thank you - A Husky
High basketball IQ, with team-first players. bleed blue.
Mind the game podcast really helped me. And now a podcast episode like this is understandable for a casual like me.
Really good interview
JJ.. great podcast... this is gold
Great stuff!
Is it possible to do a after-season-interview with Wemby after the pre-season-one? It would be interesting to know how he expatiates his growth (also in light of his views about being content with your position in the universe).
Nice work as always JJ
JJ will be the next coach at Duke. A premier program like Duke is way too big for Jon S. without any prior experience.
Oh yeah and he's taking notes...
Doubt JJ wants that kind of responsibility… Why would he leave this cushy gig? Maybe years down the line if he’s looking for a challenge.
@@jutman17761 He's already interviewed for NBA GM positions and coaching jobs. Charlotte is interviewing him for their vacant position. Dude is wealthy. Not about a cushy gig anymore as much as something that challenges him.
I’m not gonna say right now that we’re 3peating but I’m not ruling it out yet
We will 😎🫡
its happening . Look out for Nowell the frosh
Jj redick looks like he’s falling in love while listening to Dan speak lmao
I knew he would be coaching at a higher level since he was as st Benedict. Didn’t expect him to stay at the hs ranks like Coach Hurley
Well, some coaches improve with age and mellowing. When John Wooden started out as a high school coach in Indiana during practice he would stand at center court with a paddle and give a swat on the arse to any players he didn't think were getting down the floor fast enough. Presumably such corporal punishment wasn't part of the UCLA dynasty. But hyper-intensity, however it's eventually channeled, does seem to be a prerequisite for coaching greatness. That's why, as a Duke alum, I've always thought JJ was the one guy from the K tree that had that level of intensity, and I wish he was on a coaching track that might get him to the Duke job someday.
Goat Hurley
Dan Hurley made undergrad at UConn so worth it after starting from ground zero again
Fascinating. Its like David Epstein's book, Range. The ability to take knowledge and concepts from others sports and add in in depth knowledge from a FIBA game to create a brilliant new play, and goignthough the different reads. Its a fascinating process. I love that Clingan on the corner play, and thank you for specifcally asking about that (as a sixers fan, having that play would've been really nice when you were here, because someone really liked being in the dunker spot, someone who also should've shot with his right hand). Also the fact that his terminology is specifically called "formations". He is making the basketball version of the spread offense. JJ I love that content. we need this.
Also the Bruce Brown usage on teh Nets call out. I love this
Also I might just be saying this because I don't watch FIBA.
How is that book?
JJ a good analyst 🙏👍🏀❤️🇳🇿✌️
Respect the Hurley's..
Ballers.. 👍💯
Let’s gooo
At 29:06, can I get a video of the set JJ is referring to?
Nice interview. Wish you would have asked at least one Geno Auriemma question. Curious about their relationship.
🎉🎉
Here we go, JJ interviews by doing most of the talking. Surprise.
Why start of the convo by talking about calapari instead of his team and the fact he went back to back smh 🤦🏾♂️ National sports media at its best

Hey Danny, love ya bro. Best coach,Best team,Best program, bar none. But please,SHUT THE F UP!!!! Don’t be telling everyone how our offense works!!! Let the opposition figure it out on their own! Connecticuts offense is awesome! Best of the best. Keep it that way.
