i hope apple's charts are wrong
The performance is going to be off the charts
No way they pull of THAT on Battery but GG's if they do
I hope not
bruh
I hope they’re right
We said “too good to be true” about the M1 last year, too. Insane times.
Imagine M2 maturing the platform
Cant imagine anything more powerful than the new M1 Pro and Max, it feels almost surreal that a laptop is capable of such power with all of these features that come with it
yeaaa, but at the end it was coming with huge price tag.
@@marcin6386 Sounds about right to me. If people wanna spend less, they get less.
@@Racko. There will most likely be CPUs more powerful than the M1 Max’s CPU by next year, and it’s GPU is already beaten in performance by full-power rtx 3080. The real surreal reality will be if the M1 Max performs as well as apple claims, at only around 60 watts, which is unheard of in the laptop space.
That’s the massive deal here. Not the performance.
Not even a minute in and this man gets into GPUs and wattage. This is why we love Dave!
4 million subscribers, how!!! AMazing.
@@elmalloc he’s good at conveying these ideas to schmucks like me
I have seen many initial impressions videos but only dave talks about gpu charts in this details
Apple people be like it’s 200x more powerful then a top of the line desktop replacement gaming laptop or workstation.
I'm not sure who cares about comparing a new something processor to old abstract processor. We would see real thing like fps charts in modern games instead of those pretty illustrations. If the new m1 processor is a real thing of course. But now we cannot even be sure it can run at least some of modern games
I just love how the performance and efficiency gains are so unbelievable that even Dave is hoping that they are wrong otherwise the competitors will look fucking silly in comparison lol.
I actually hope they are right, because this would be the first time I will support Apple regarding their pricing. It will be genuinely justified this time around.
@@atishsingh8926 the current m1 macbooks is reasonably priced imo, definitely way faster than any windows ultrabook counterpart
@@revandewaputra4239 now they are, and air is as well but they weren't always especially considering the keyboard issue, ports and other thermal issue. now their prices are justified for their performance
They already looked silly with the first M1 and it was half-baked, someone call 911, Intel and AMD are getting fucking destroyed
@@lilmoris1 lmao, soon to be nvidia too.
everyone said "too good to be true" about m1 too and it turned out unbelievably good... I think these new chip will also blow everyone's mind
Lol why would they lie. Also from pure engineering standpoint, if you have an architecture where everything is unified and don’t have too many gates to access each part like ram/processor, that is a recipe for success. Also the amount of transistors on that 5nm structure allows them to basically make something like a 32 core gpu small and blazing fast
I just love how Dave straight up pulled the comparison Laptops out lmao
He should have laid a current MBP13 on top for comparison since the new 14 is a similar footprint.
You know...! 😂
I was thinking the same thing when Apple was showing those charts. They were comparing the new Macbook Pro to the MSI GE76 and Razer Blade 17.
Eee

I wish that more tech CZcamsrs talked about performance in engineering apps like CAD or EDA. We’re professionals too.
Exactly. Unf since most CAD packages can only be run through a VM (hopefully that changes soon) it's hard to offer any substantial metrics. HOWEVER, Apple's website does have comparison graphs for a CFD package, which is nice.
It is really difficult to find benchmarks even on Excel capabilities and it is THE most used business reporting software. Hardware Unboxed had their own "Big number crunch test", but I think thats it. People just run a bunch of synthetic tests that may or may not convert to real life performance.
@@GarrettBroadnax That’s my grief with these new machines. They’re powerful, efficient, and amazing but sometimes I need apps that run only on Windows, and since these machines no longer have a native way of switching to windows aka bootcamp it’s hard to buy them. I heard Apple are up to the task but Microsoft are the ones that need to make an ARM version of windows for it to work.
@@MikeCobweb This! I recently just had to buy a new Windows laptop even though I'd have preferred an M1 Macbook for site work where battery life is really useful. Alas some of the engineering apps I use will only run on Windows (and that barely sometimes). 😒
The problem is that most of youtubers/creators are self-referential, so they care only about video and photo editing. It's not so easy to find an opinion with a professional or technical eye.
I bought the M1 macbook air, and I'm absolutely in love with it. The power, battery life, screen resolution. Simply amazing! These new ones are even more jaw dropping
I know right? The battery is amazing! 16-20 hours! And the screen is 2K which at that price point is unheard of! And M1 is just mwaah! I love my Air. First Mac I ever bought.
Love how Apple comes in to wake AMD and Intel up from their comfort zone slumber. Things are starting to get very exciting. Hope we have enough chips to go around.
That's not really a fair statement. Amd doesn't have any comfort zone. They're literally fighting for their existence. Don't believe for a second they won't push with everything imaginable.
Intel hasn't been in their comfort zone for quite some time now either. They're just far behind in process tech. But believe me, they're scrambling.
No ones sitting idle atm. Nvidia are kinda sandbagging though.
@Caskay And how did you see his comments ? Lol
AMDs worst nightmare is about to become true
I don't think so, AMD's current 5800U was already better in MT performance then the M1, Intel's new Alder Lake mobile CPUs should also be better then the CPUs in the M1 Pro and M1 Max in every way. We have to rember that these M1s aren't going to compete with current AMD and Intel CPUs, they are competing with next gen Intel and AMD CPUs and those will be far better then what's currently on the market, Alder Lake U will have 6 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores while AMD's Zen 4 will go up to 16 cores on laptops if rumors are true.
In GPUs we will have to see, these charts look like BS, but who knows, but even then the M1 iGPUs lack features like RT acceleration.
@@goncaloduarte4683 5800U is impressive. And I love that chip. But u being so over-confident thinking the M1 Max will be beaten so easily by alder lake is quite a poor way to react. By that time apple might already have the M2 closer to release.
4:16 Regarding the more powerful 140W adaptor on the 16" models versus the 96W one on the 14", remember that in the announcement, Apple claimed fast charging for 30 minutes would give a 50% charge on both models. The 16" has a ~40% larger battery (100Wh vs 70Wh), so it will need ~40% more wattage to obtain this.
also the larger battery will be able to support a higher charge wattage.
Hopefully the wattage difference doesn’t impact performance between the two too much
I mean it makes sense the larger device can also support a higher TDP SOC.
Apple do actually state the 16 inch model is more capable than 14 inch one with the same component.
In the "which chip is right for you" section of each model's configuration page, apple claims 5 streams of 8k ProRes 422 for the 14 inch, while 7 streams for the 16 inch.
btw the chart for m1max CPU tops wattage at 30w, and GPU tops at 60w, so combined it's about 100w for the chip alone, which the 96w supply that comes with the 14 inch model can't even match.
Great to hear your perspective as always Dave!
Hello Nathan
nice to see you here mr eucalyptus
Now can we get your perspective on the new MacBook Pro?
🤩🤩
Spray some Eucalyptus oil on these Macs
Crazy that apples ~10 Tflop GPU can outperform or match a 3080 with ~15 tflops GPU. And when both are on battery power it’ll make the 3080 look like a toaster.
Are you talking about the RTX3080 mobile? Because that does not seem like it would be 15 Teraflops..
So does that mean gaming on a MacBook Pro ?
@@antoniojg-b8284 that's what their new video ads are signaling. The one for M1 Max highlights professional 3D rendering & playing video games. It's so bizarre seeing such an ad from them. I thought it was Razer marketing at first.
You have to be careful with that comparison because not all apps support M1. Blender is a great example, and a 3080 will annihilate the M1 Max (since M1 can only render with CPU). However, that might change in a few years once more apps start supporting M1. However, there are many apps that already support M1.
Zhong Ze, Apple actually just joined the Blender development fund the other day! They’ve submitted one commit about Metal support so I imagine it will be compatible soon enough. Very exciting times for Blender folks.
Competition like this is always so exciting for the industry. Pumped to see hands-on impressions!

This is great progress. It's hard to please everyone, but they have made a laptop that is focused on PRO users again, and that's what matters. This will sell very well and cements Apple's place with high end users.
I never knew they had a place with such users I. The first place.😂
No “high end” user is hangingvtheir cap on Apple, all you favorite CZcamsrs have windows machine work flows #facts
@@Timeculture Yea I don't think anyone is denying the place of windows work flows. I hope this spurs game developers to actually put work into the MacOS platform. Imagine this hardware with the kind of software support Windows enjoys, it would be enough to tempt a lot of people over to Mac.
Yea exactly. What good is all the power of there are no games (would totally widen apples target group)
Of course there are also professionals that can use it.
Still no Genshin Impact even though it's already on iOS (at 120fps!) and PC
@@Sodium779 M1 Macs can run iOS apps tho
@@VezWay007 But devs can prevent Mac users from using their apps for "usability reasons" so you can't actually download Genshin Impact on a Mac through the App Store. You have to sideload it through shady means.
I agree. I play a lot of AAA games on my 2015 iMac and they still run great (games from 2013-2019). Metal has really improved gaming performance and now with this hardware, there is no reason that we can't see even more games. Apple has been hiring and working on expanding their gaming platform this past year. Gaming is a huge money maker, greater than movies or music, so I'm sure Apple knows this.

Great review/summary looking forward to the full product review in the future - got yourself a new sub and I’m here for the long haul
man this is a good review. First CZcams channel that took seriously this huge step: the chips and not "the ports"
I’m looking to get the 16 inch MBP (M1 Max). Is 64gb unified memory going to make a lot of difference or I’m good with the 32gb one?
It depends on what you do. If you edit 4k+ videos, I'm sure it will make a difference.
As said it depends on what you do - but it will NOT help with video editing as memory isn't the problem. If you're doing computational work, rendering 3D in say Blender or running a lot of virtual machines then yes, 64GB will help. Otherwise no, absolutely not, you're just wasting (more) of your money.
Well get more memory because this is basically going to be a high end intergrated graphics. It shares memory but I would wait until they hit the stores and play around with them and look at the activity monitor .

Just grabbed the top end 16” (but with 32GB RAM and 1TB). As an owner of the previous M1 pro, it’s served my needs very well, but I have hit the 16GB cap a bunch of times editing video and doing color work. So the 32GB and the new display is a huge huge plus. And bringing back HDMI was such a smart move-I’ve had so many issues getting 4K/60 with adapters.
can you run fluid dynamaics, simulations and cad softwares on mac?
@@laputin710 That’s not really my area of expertise, but I think there are a lot of CAD applications that work on MacOS. Does seem like many popular ones have been updated to M1. But many are able to work through Rosetta 2 (like AutoDesk). CAD software tends to be very single-core dependent which the M1 computers excel at, so I wouldn’t be surprised by impressive performance.
i use the m1 8gb edit 4k videos and i havent had any issue, maybe you're overexaggerating your issue to justify the new purchase.
@@truthseeker6804 Ok bud. Maybe we do different things with our hardware? Lol. I open Activity Monitor all the time, and I’ve seen my usage get up to 15.5Gb when doing work in Resolve while having Premiere open in the background idling (just so I can keep up with shot continuity). That’s just using 4K raw from a Sony FS5II. I have a project coming up that’s mixing Arriraw and 4K 16mm scans at 4444, so the 32GB will definitely be helpful. Especial if I intend to keep up with 6K/8K. Maybe the better GPU will take some of the load off the RAM, I’m not sure. I’m not quiiite tech savvy enough to understand completely the concept of memory sharing.
@@raymondzrike2085 Then you should get the 64GB model .... memory usage at 15.5gb doesn't mean it's having issues. Swapping is normal in modern OS.

The wattage bump on the 16" is really just for the fast charging - since the 16" pro version is the same spec with the 14" except for the screen. Hardware level is just the bigger - juicier battery
We don’t know that yet. The 14 and 16 can be equipped with the same chip, but they may not run at the same wattage or have comparable cooling. It’s like all those random reviews last year trying to convince people that the 13 Pro was better than the Air because of the fan in the Pro. @@estiennetaylor1260 Well if you’re a gamer, maybe it’s not that impressive…but for content creation this is just way better on the go. I’ve got a 5950X and a 3080 Ti but I’m definitely gonna buy some computers with M1 Max this year
At least you have a touch screen.
Yeah, I think you’re right about the 14”. Between the lower power supply, smaller battery, tighter form factor, smaller fans etc, it’s hard to see how the M1Max would perform as fast in a direct comparison with the same chip in the 16”. But then, the fan less MBAir does an insane job of matching the M1 13” MBP so who knows? We’ll find out next week…
