These are four of the new MacBook Pro models, a base 14 M1 Pro and a base 16, and then fully maxed out versions of both. I bought all of these with my own money to help with some important questions - and some of the answers really surprised me. I also want to talk about who does not need these laptops and then one other thing that I don’t hear mentioned in most MacBook reviews - and I have no idea why.

Loved the comment about the value of fast render times vs. the playback/scrubbing experience of actually editing a video. I completely relate to that and think that's really on the mark. Another thing I notice few people talk about is the web browsing on these machines. I don't care how much editing you do, chances are you spend more time on the web than you do editing. Up until recently, no 16" MacBook Pro could play back an 8K CZcams video in Chrome and few people talked about that, even though Chrome is probably the most popular web browser. But my new 16" M1 Pro MacBook can actually play 8K video now. It gets about a 272 on Speedometer 2.0. Now that's valuable!

As long as your computer feels responsive for what you want to do with it, you have all the power you need. Your message in this video is spot on, surplus power is redundant and a luxury most can't afford. Those who need all of this power, as you say, will probably use these glorious machines to make money and for those people the price is of little concern.

I decided to go with the 14” M1 Max with 32cores and 64g of ram with 2tb ssd. I spend nearly all day filming and editing. It was a lot of money, but after just 5 days the amount of time I saved in imports, renders, and the fact that I can upload multiple streams of R3D 6k files without it skipping a beat even when luts, grain etc added has allowed me to cut my production time dramatically and time = money.

Sagi, this was by far one of the best (perhaps the best) videos I have seen reviewing the new Macs. I especially appreciated your in-depth and cogent and coherent explanation of the notch's size relative to its important contents--e.g. the ambient light sensor used to adjust screen brightness and 'temperature'. So many other reviewers seem to focus on denigrating the notch without ever mentioning the substantial requirements the notch must satisfy. This is but one sampling of your balanced and comprehensive coverage, which I think makes you one of the most reliable reviewers.

That's what I'm struggling to decide at the moment. My projects aren't super complicated, but I am editing GH6 files now, which can be quite high quality (not using ProRes files).

I really enjoyed this video- the content and presentation style. I love your mindset with regard to what is important for you and your workflow. Most other reviewers never come from that perspective.
So as you say in your video, if you are someone like yourself who doesn’t care so much about rendering times and puts emphasis on buttery smooth workflow, I would like to know which computer chip, memory, etc. you recommend? Is the base M1Pro enough? Or an M1Pro with how much more memory? Or should I skip to the M1Max base model?

Instead of tweaking my current machine every year, I'll just replace my Mac every two to three years. Another important reason I switched is for the noise. I have been using big sized mbp such as mbp 17, mbp 15 and mbp 16 (intel) before i went to 13" mbp m1. And yeah it is too small for my usage that involves graphic designing, programming and 3d modelling. However overtime i find that 13" is actually very usable and the privilege of having such a powerful machine in a small form factor is a bonus.
Then when 14 and 16 mbp m1 pro released, i was in dilemma again. Part of me said finally the big screen mbp is back, while another part of me said i will miss the small form factor.
So I went to apple store to compare almost everything i can. From the dimension, weight, screen estate, audio etc.
For me yes 16" isnt that bigger in sized but it is noticeably heavier than the 14".
The screen estate is definitely bigger than the 14" more than I thought and is really a plus point.
The audio is louder, and more bass, but not that big difference. The 14" sounds great on its own.
After a long thought, I went for the 14" with 1tb ssd and i couldnt be happier!

I would say the video editing will be the most challenging function for my computer to handle, also I use FCPX. Did I purchase correctly? Should I have gotten the max? Should I have spent more on more ram instead of more storage? My priorities are same as yours. I want smooth playback/scrubbing, more screen real estate, but a lighting fast tender time isn’t paramount. Your insight will be so helpful. Hopefully I’ll hear back from you before I can’t return the computer if need be.

How long will the late 2021 M1 last? From a security view point the life span is based on 1) how many years Apply will feel like supporting your MBP version with its latest OS update and 2) How many maintaiablity years will they feel that it's cost effective to accept your MPB version for testing; and then theirs the costs of maintaining a stock of repairability parts. Today's collateral question is how long will it take for your favorite apps to mod their S/W to change from Intel to the M-1 chip set. It is noted that in selecting the 16" 64 M1 Max the Intel GPU gets replaced by Apple's GPU.

Great video. I love the "buy it nice or buy it twice" motto. I overbuilt the daylights out of a Windows desktop in 2016, and it still screams. 64GB of RAM was considered a luxury at the time, but it served me well during thousands of hours in Photoshop with heavily layered files. The M1 Max is currently the only way to get 64GB of RAM in a MacBook pro, so you know which one I bought, even though I don't need the extra video editing prowess.

You have the best videos! I appreciate your reviews... In your opinion, will a base model 16" be able to perform using Photoshop/Illustrator/Lightroom? I am a photographer and am looking to spend on my first MacBook Pro and I want to make the right decision. I don't know if I should opt for the MAX or if the Pro would be enough. For sure the 16" model though - I love the big screen size. Anyway, any opinions you have would be greatly appreciated. Aloha!

Thank you - you're very kind - and I'm glad the videos are helpful. Yes, the 16" Pro crushes those three programs. Will you see some difference if you're batching 100's of RAW photos - sure. But it's like the video rendering example I gave, it depends on how often you do those things and how much that time-saving means to you. Hope that makes sense.

There is only 1 situation where i would recommend going for the 16 instead of the 14 which is if you don't have an external monitor to connect it with either at home or office, because if u do, a big external monitor will always be better than a 16 inch. And what you gain in portability when u take it outside is not comparable between the two.

    • @marianobarcia
      @marianobarcia Před 2 lety +7

I have to disagree. 16” is big enough and it’s gorgeous (better quality than an external monitor). Portability has become less of an issue (for me at least). I’d rather have a big gorgeous incorporated display that I can take to the bed or the sofa immediately. But to each his own, of course, just wanted to present a counter argument based on my (extensive) experience.

My 16" M1 Max with 64gb & 8tb ssd flies through everything except for a short section of Canon R5 8k all-i h265 clip that I sped up 5000% on the latest Davinci Studio 17. It only slowed down when rendering that portion & the full 8k 6min 30 sec video took about 10mins 15sec to render. You can not extrapolate from video editing performance into other areas of performance, compute cycles for a different task, like compiling code, rendering 3d models, game development, etc. All have different compilers and software layers so they will all have different gains on the ArmM1 mac.

Just ordered 16” m1max 64gb 2tb with fcp instilled coming February-January for video editing and software development. I can wait I waited a whole month for 1 month reviews to make a decision and it was worth the wait I can definitely wait again. Plan on keeping it for 8 years plus or until it stop working like my 2014 MacBook Pro that stop working three months ago after owning it for 7 years it stopped working because it was lagging n freezing then decide to shut down because It was not enough space like every second. I toke me like 6hr sometimes just to edit one video seriously it was so laggy and about 2hr just to export and when I was done exporting the video n finally get to watch it and realize I made a mistake I would have to go back an edit for hrs because it laggy then export for hr.’if it wasn’t for that I would have kept it or it shutting down. So don’t let nobody judge for wanting to future proof for that little head room
