Photography & Camping Kit Review: Whats In My Bag

  • This is my 50th vlog since I started my landscape photography (and wild camping!) channel. I thought it's about time I did a "what's in my bag" edition because I've refined my equipment into a simple modular system for quick trips out, day hikes and overnight wild camps.
    I've tried to make it as easy and lightweight as possible to get out into the landscape for photography and wild camping.
    I hope you find it interesting and maybe even helpful.
    My budget equipment ...
    Camera: Nikon D5500
    Lenses: Nikkor 18 - 200mm, Tokina 11 - 16mm ATX Pro
    Filmed on Hawkeye Firefly 8S, with external lavalier mic and DJI Spark drone.
    Please do comment to tell me what you think, and subscribe to join me next time!

    David, anyone who can say "safety kit and all that sort of old bollocks" when describing a pouch - or who can rightly laugh at folk who think a water bottle is a 'hydration system' absolutely gets my unequivocal admiration!! GREAT video!!

    Having fought my way through a years worth of "Pubcasts" in two/three months, I am now sampling the participants channels. I love your attitude and as one creaking old man to another, I may have to invest in some walking poles. Actually, as I am getting my second knee replacement in two weeks time, it may be a good Xmas present. Thanks.

      Hello Joe, thanks so much for getting in touch. Firstly, may I say I am very sorry about the Pubcast! 😂👍 But also, thank you so much for having a look at my channel. I really appreciate it, even if you are watching old stuff of which I am somewhat ashamed. Hopefully you'll find the newer stuff slicker and more entertaining! You certainly won't regret investing in trekking poles, I rarely go out without them these days and they really do make all the difference. 😊👍

    David, I was just on Amazon hunting for a small ball head and I found one that I think might work. There weren’t many reviews, but one said, “Cheap as chips, and does a great job. What’s not to love?” I instantly knew where I’d heard that before! Good enough-I’ll give it a go. Cheers, Jeff

    Thanks David, I'm sending my wife to you for a demo on packing lightly. I've been trying for 33 years and she still packs 2 suitcases and add carrier bags for an overnight stay :-) Interesting you use an 18-200mm lens. I have the canon version on my old 450D and love it. I do get strange looks when I use it on my canon M3 though :-D

      @DGriffGallery  Před 5 lety +1

      Hahaha!!! I read this out to the lovely Mrs G who has lot in common with the lovely Mrs D. Not hugely amused 😁 The 18-200 was added a couple of months ago to avoid carrying a longer lens when my old 140mm wasn’t quite enough. It really is a catch all range for me. I only carry the 35mm prime as a luxury item as it’s so light 👍🏻

    Great vlog David. First of all, if that is the view from your back garden, then I’m jealous. I’ve watched so many of the “what’s in my bag” videos, and I told myself no more, but I’m glad I watched yours. I’m 54 and have a back that flares up after many years of golf, so sometimes it’s a real challenge to carry gear. Like you, I put a premium on weight and carry as little as possible. I like your minimalist “modular” system for your shorter trips. I’ve never tried something like that. I finally settled on a comfortable, supportive backpack that seems to do the trick for now. Hopefully this video fulfilled the “demands” from those three viewers! 😊 Looking forward to your next video. Still prepping for my short visit to Anglesey in September. See what you can do about the weather. Cheers, Jeff

      Cheers Jeff. Front garden actually. I was in 2 minds about doing a what's in my bag. But I'm glad I did because the feedback has been pretty good and as I'm nearer 60 than 50 I thought my system might be helpful. 👍😀

    Very interesting David and I really like the modular approach, I'll have to try that.
    You did forget one of your essentials, your hip flask filled with a suitable product of Scotland's best distilleries! A few other "cheap as sgoldion" things I'd throw into the mix if you don't mind:
    - Spare bootlaces, aside from the obvious use, they're useful as general purpose ties as well
    - A Bin Bag - you can use it as: a ground mat, just to sit on or to lie on when you want to get down and dirty, ; makeshift poncho/rain cover and even as a bin bag!
    - A couple of phone apps I'd recommend: PhotoPills - the "swiss army knife" of photography apps and ViewRanger which I think is an invaluable back up to my OS maps and compass. If you do go down that route it's worth thinking about a getting a Powerbank as well.
    Thanks again and here's to the next 50!

      Hi Brian, thanks a lot I always appreciate your feedback and support! The ball head is this one: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B071WJ9SV9/ mine is the E1 model. Despite the small size and very low weight the ball locks perfectly even with a long lens on. You can adjust the lever position for locked / open so ignore the review which complains about it being blocked by the camera! I'm very pleased with it. 👍

    Really enjoyed this David. What filter system do you use if you do not se grads? I was looking at screw on but can't decide!

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi, at the time I just had a screw in CPL, ND1000 (10 stop) and a variable from ND2 - ND400 (1 to 8 stops). But I moved on subsequently and starting using more lenses on location so bought a second set of Cokin filters. With these ND values, CPL and also a series of grad filters. Because I thought if I have the holder anyway I might as well make use of them as one size holder with the relevant fitting rings fits all my lenses for 85mm square filters. I have to say it does make life easier sometimes to use a filter for the sky, but I still shoot without them when the horizon isn't flattish! I've only just moved to another single lens M4/3rds system so again life will be easier one lens and with fewer bits of kit to carry. Hopefully!! :)

    Just found your inspiring channel and immediately subscribed.
    Great to see that you made amazing photos with a "cheaper" equipment.
    Is there a huge difference for you between the D5500 and your new Olympus? I'm also using a Nikon D5xxx at the moment and want to upgrade to another system because I feel like I've grown out of the camera :) And weight is also important for me .... thank you!

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 4 lety

      Hello Patrick, thank you ever so much for watching and being good enough to support my channel. I hope to keep you entertained. With regards to thoughts on switching from Nikon to Olympus, for me, the difference has been night and day! I find some of the features specific to landscape photography such as Live Time for long exposures to be extremely helpful. But I would say the game changer for me, and rather specific to my type of photography, is leaving a single pro lens on the body pretty much all the time. The 12 - 100mm f/4.0 pro lens is simply outstanding, and along with the additional stabilisation working with the IBIS it's a sensational package which no mid-range Nikon could help to compete with. Of course, that is solely my opinion and I would definitely recommend looking at other reviews etc before any purchasing decision is made! But over the last 12 months also I have produced some images with which I am very happy and I know would not have been feasible without spending literally thousands of pounds more, and lugging huge amounts of weight about! 😊👍

      @patrick.771 Před 4 lety

      @@DGriffGallery thank you very much for your kind answer!
      I watched many many camera reviews over the past weeks but there aren't many photographers out there who use Micro 4/3 for landscape. And lot's of photographers tell you that you need full frame. But I'm doing hikes and I'm not that fit at the moment so a lightweight solution is necessary for me too.
      Since you also used a Nikon D5xxx before, I am very happy to hear that the upgrade made a huge difference for you.
      I also looked at your photos on your website and they look really good. At the moment I'm also considering a Nikon D7500, Canon 90d or Nikon Z50. Still not 100% sure what to do but your answer helped a lot!
      Wish you all the best with your photography and your channel! Will follow you. Greetings from Austria (where we have a lot more mountains but unfortunately no sea :) ) ...

    Calmly & smoothly presented as usual - just 1 of the reasons I follow you. Couple of things to ask, did you record the audio for this on your cheap knock-off recorder you showed us & I didn't quite get which tent you use. Keep 'em coming David!

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 5 lety

      Cheers Colin. Yes this audio was on the cheap recorder. I don't usually do an entire vlog with it because you have to sync with the footage in post which is a bit of a pain. It's much easier when the audio is via the camera. But it does allow a lot of freedom to move about when out shooting so I do use it a lot. Its levels are much lower than the camera, so there's a bit of adjustment necessary in post, but I think it's worth it, especially for only £20. For shelter I'm now using a DD 3x3m tarp. I did use a Vango Blade 200 tent before, but the tarp is only 800g as opposed to 2.5Kg for the tent! And as I'm never out in blizzards, I find a tarp is fine for basic shelter. 👍

      Good point about sound in edit, I think I will stick with long cable. I have meant to ask before what edit software you use? I am not prepared to shell out for Prem Pro each month & the free Davinci is intimidatingly complex!

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 5 lety

      I'm quite happy with iMovie. It's FREE 😀😀and it's simple to use. I tried Prem Pro. Hated it within 5 minutes! Tried Davinici. Ditto. There's nothing I need to achieve in my stuff that iMovie can't handle easily. Except one thing: the titles are a bit restricting. But I get over that if I need to by floating a transparent background text graphic as a pic in pic which I can knock up in PS.
