Every now and again CZcams throws up an absolute gem. This is a diamond amongst the rough.
A 'gem', indeed!
Absolutely! I enjoyed it. Not that I know how to sail 😀nor will I be able to afford an open dinghy let alone a sailboat but ..
Yes ! 🫡👏👍🏼
I am happy when children get a real adventure early in life. best wishes from Sweden
Magnificent video. Stunning visuals and charming, articulate narrator!
Can only echo the praise of others for this wonderful and original film of your adventures. Thank you so much all of you. The narration was great too❤😊
Just completed the book 'Thicker Than Ice'. It joins the bookshelves with the classic sailing books of the last century alongside the Pennington's first wonderful book 'Orca'.
Very kind of you, James. Thank you!
@@JohnPennington-xx8qx Simple fact. It is ... superb
Wow!
this is so so so cool. Congratulations to Dean for being a great story teller.
What a terrific little film. Wish there was more. Excellent filming, editing and narration. Plus it looks like an extremely well prepared and executed voyage.
Loved the video especially with your son narrating! Beautiful!
The best summation of a life planned and lived I've seen.
Best of luck in your future endeavors.
I love this video! This is the absolute best. I have always said if I needed a crew to sail to save my life it would only be you. For anyone watching this video the parents had already sailed one and a half times round the world before the narrator was born! I send my love to the crew and their fine ship. I see one of my pics made it in to the video. I'm dead chuffed. Loads of love Mr n 'Talisker 1'.
Thank you James! Loved sailing with you up to Lowestoft, so sorry we missed your photo credit. Updated the description to include you. Lots of love from Alaska!
John! You did not need to do that! That was not why I mentioned it. I want to sail in the Pacific before I die. I fear if I visit I'd be more trouble than Arthur! Your video has warmed my heart. Thank you thank you
Thank you, I enjoyed the ride tremendously!
What an epic journey and video, we are so stoked for you guys! Kara, the editing was great and I love the perspective in which the story was told. Dean, great job narrating, you are a natural storyteller and one of the coolest kids in the entire world. John, great job on all the hardcore boatwork, the planning, and navigating required to pull off this mission. It does seem from the video that Kara steps in to handle most of the tough work and I think you were more into Quadamaran than Dean! I got a Tom Hanks and Wilson kind of relationship from Castaway vibe there. The desire and passion required to dream, plan, and to execute this adventure is extremely motivating for me and our whole family. We love you guys and are always here to support you in every way!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed, thanks for all your support!!
Outstanding! Well done! With respect, from start to finish. Safe sailing for the rest of your voyage. ❤
Safety was not why you sailed
We have a saying in our house reserved only for the best, most inspiring people. We say “they can come for tea”. You three are welcome anytime!
Go Dean! You guys are such legends, what an awe inspiring journey!
amazing in so many ways
Well done!
Hi guys, I have to credit you all. We did this NWP trip E-W in 2001 (Turmoil) and tried the next year W-E and failed. It was hard on the first unassisted motor yacht to go through and being a sailor (and getting the Laser pics against a massive iceberg) I can imagine what is was like in your vessel, only 2 of you + Dean, despite the huge difference in pack ice thickness. Being an ice pilot as well, it does take away form the achievement nor make today any easier than it was 23 years ago. With just 3 of you....wow! Congrats and I look forward to following you through the very familiar Pacific.
Thank you! It was a good ice year which certainly helped.
What a charming film. A sturdy boat well prepared for high latitude sailing. The narration was charming too😊 👏🫡👍🏼👍🏼
Brilliant! Exceptional video in every way.
Absolutely magical.
Thank you for a wonderful share! ✌😎👍
WOW...thanks for sharing-what a beautiful voyage.
You deserve a million subscribers thank you for this beautiful Channel very best regards from Italy
Wow. Broke my heart. Such a beautiful video. Loved it so much. Xxx🎉❤
Thank you Kris! And thanks for all your help in England, we'd have been in trouble without you guys!
Amazing!
I enjoyed that. Well done, different, skill and courage.
Great adventure, and what a happy family your are. Thank's for sharring.
What an excellent adventure! Thank you.
you guys are awesome, kid is going to be a great human, we need more
Outstanding! ⛵
Hi John, I watched this movie many times with different friends and had a great time every time. Can’t wait to read your new book!
I explored the NWP on google earth one evening on a whim. Now CZcams shows me these NWP passage makers. I had no idea there were so many choosing this route. There are almost no inhabited stations, supply or rescue sources. Like the middle of the ocean with land all around you. Awesome.
Great movie. beautiful adventure with a catamaran in the background. you are the best
Beautiful video. I Love it!
This was excellent, great photography, phenomenal drone footage, and I loved the understated narration, it worked really well to have Dean narrate, I thought it might be cheesy, but it wasn’t at all. I really enjoyed watching it.
Brilliant !
Braves the Penningtons!!
perfectly narrated.
What an amazing little movie!! An epic voyage!
WoW !
Bravo 👏
We are Louise and Yves , Amy’s friends !

Wow this was such a joy to watch! Wonderful footage and editing, and amazing storytelling by Dean the legend! We miss being up there with you and will watch this many times :D
Thank you for being there with us! Honored to sail with you legends-in-the-making on Thindra.
Your narrator is the best, quite an adventure ❤
I love this. Your narrator has a promising career infront of him!
Congratulations, just bought both your books !! hope you´ll now enjoy warm sailing and palm fringed beaches in the Pacific !!
Little guy is getting life experiences most of us can only dream about, like that you don’t “baby” him and let him do his thing.
LEGENDS
Fantastic! Congratulations and thank you!
Thanks you! We're just glad we escaped 😆
Loved this and the narration of the video was truly magical, well done young man👏👏
Planning and managing risk, well done and thanks for a great video.
Great adv.
This is just an amazing story and beautiful video Dean is the most charming narrator, what a great perspective. Can't wait to read the book!
Thank you so much!
What a wonderful movie and fantastic narration Dean!
Thank you Dana! Fair winds on your trip this summer.

What an exquisite experience for a youngster - and the adults! Thanks for sharing this amazing voyage. I loved the narration. I imagine you were very grateful for the time spent in the meticulous preparation and planning. Best not to wait for retirement to experience this type of adventure.
Really cool video! Subscribed! Its always nice to see families on legit sailing adventures. Im on cape cod, restoring a rotten old tub that everyone said not to bother with. It is one of my goals to sail the NW passage with my family, but first, the boat needs to be rebuilt!
I’m rebuilding a tub, year 3 now.. hope to hit the water in September
Fantastic, thanks for sharing.
What an adventure! So enjoyable, so amusing, and heartwarming. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Thanks for the great post
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks!
SUPERB film, could of watched so much more of this adventure.
Fantastic narration 😁👍
Beautiful film, family and boat! Amazing job guys
Wonderful! Well done to you all. Thanks for sharing.
On our bucket list, super refreshing narration and filming, had a very quaint olde worlde feel to it, made my morning young fella. I hope that Quadamaran gets a place in sailing hall of fame, it sure deserves it!!
Thank you for sharing your voyage so far as a family
I am really looking forward to seeing more
A good job, good luck sailor AIOLOS🎉😊
I must say the narrator was one of the best I’ve heard. Loved your video.Poor Mommy and Daddy had to hand steer! I had to laugh the way he said that, despite the situation you two were in.
Cool
Beautiful video , thanks for share it.
wish you fair winds, calm seas and safe anchorages......
Hope to cross our path some day.
Cheers.
Zeek and Flor from S/Y Ypake II
Thank you, Zeek and Flor!
wow
Thank you so much for this fantastic film. Made my day. Happy sailing ❤
A really beautiful video of this trip! The music kinda kills it though... I think the pictures speaks for themselves.
Awesome! Hoping to sail the passage some day soon too! Great editing
Great! Happy to help however we can!
Just bought your book too! Will stay in touch and reach out when we get closer to ready, this summer headed to hawaii and back, little shakedown
This is a great sailing video! Dean is a good narrator. I bet he learned a lot on this adventure? Towing his toy boat, brought back memories of when I was a boy! I am wondering, will Dean be a sailor, like his parents? I really enjoyed your video. I also sail,I have a Mirage 27.I sailed it from Toronto Ontario to Fogo Island, Newfoundland. It was a great experience and adventure! Stay safe from the east coast of Canada 🇨🇦.
Thanks for sharing!
I will add my thank you, wonderful story, a route of a different type I would say.
What a fantastic voyage!!
You guys killed it with this video! This is one of my lifelong dreams
Great video - thank you
Awesome!
Outstanding...😊
This is a simply brilliant video! An amazing adventure, modestly and cleverly told and neatly explained. I loved every minute of this. Thanks for sharing your obvious skills as both parents, sailors and video creators!
A trip of a life time. TH
That is amazing. Great footage and great commentary. Will have to find the book. 🐟
More! Please! Cheers from 🇨🇭
Great video; music bit loud, hoaky. I'm a rock/jazz percussionist, several bands a week, for 60 years, so I'm used to loud, but like to hear the narration not buried by music.
Congratulations on a great adventure! I think we met years ago in Ford's Terror when you were on Orca, it's great to see you've kept on going!
Круто, Дуже Круто !!! ❤❤❤
SWEET :)
Some music good..
You have completed the adventure I'm planning. What is the make of your boat? Zaal? Koopmans?
What an amazing video.. so inspirational. My partner and I are in the process of rehabbing our own aluminum boat with a dodger. Where did you get the opening hatches and windows for your cockpit dodger? We are planning something similar.
Thank you! We used Wynne Enterprises in Alabama; they were helpful and by far the the most economical. Even cheaper is to go without frames--just using the rubber gasket--but I was worried the glass would be pushed in by a wave. Hope that helps. Fair winds!
wow, did drone footage help you navigate thru the icebergs???
I am curious as to why your compass stop working? If you were near the North Pole ish. I was wondering and have been fascinated about the Black mountain?
Amazing adventure and great video (and very funny thanks to the narrator). May I ask you about the hard dodger construction and welding process? We also own an old aluminium sailboat and I considering doing it my own (the hard dodger) and also a few other welding works. Thanks!
For sure! We MIG welded it from 5000-series aluminum. It wasn't too difficult to learn and was a lot of fun. Frames and plating 3mm aluminum, which is fairly light and plenty strong to stand on etc
@@JohnPennington-xx8qx Appreciated! I think I'm gonna try it too. May I ask you about the welding machine you used and also any online tutorial that perhaps you used? Thanks again!
@@JohnPennington-xx8qx Also can you recommend me where to buy the aluminium? Sorry for so many questions. I owe you a few beers! ;-)
I used a Miller multimatic 215 with a spool gun. It was not cheap, but it runs on 110/220v 50/60hz anywhere in the world, and is quite small.
The "correct" aluminum is 5053 or 5056 alloy but it's difficult to find. 5052 and 6000-series is okay for above the waterline and I found it at the local sheet metal shop so that's what our dodger is made from. We left it bare and it's starting very well. I used 5356 filter wire.
I think I watched all the tutorials... And read a lot of paper books too! Welding new aluminum is pretty straight forward but the old, dirty oxidized stuff is hard to get clean enough. Dental tools and small Dremel tools and lots of time!
subbed... hope it helps! great work! great life!
