We're Sinking!

- During a year when I have been heavily involved in restoring a house, I have managed to get away in my cruising dinghy just a few times. During one of these her hull became damaged, so that Avel Dro began to leak badly during a planned weekend passage to a little maritime festival at Pors Beac'h.
PUFFINS TREK
This admirable enterprise on the North Breton coast organised the trip out to the Ile Vierge. Puffin's Trek hire out cruising dinghies and create organised dinghy tours. They invited me to go and give a talk about dinghy cruising in Avel Dro, even in my execrable French.

AVEL DRO
Do you want a boat like mine?
Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994. I bought her in France in 2003 to import her into the UK, and more recently returned her to France again. The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century - hence her simple boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. Modern Ilurs are however slightly different internally from mine, as they have more built in buoyancy. The name Avel Dro is Breton, Avel = wind, Dro = to turn - so it means a whirlwind.
Length 4.44 m
Sail area 12.2 m²
Beam 1.70 m
Draught 0.25 / 0.86 m
Displacement loaded with camping and sailing gear 400 kg
Design category C3

POST-BREXIT BOAT BUYING
Since January 2021, when Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland) left the European Single Market, if you buy a boat in France or elsewhere in the EU and import it into the UK, you will become liable for VAT and other duties on the import - even if it is second hand. Similar charges are due if you take a British boat the other way. This does not apply to a boat taken to another country for a holiday, however. - Jak na to + styl
Thanks for the post Roger it's been awhile and you have been missed. I don't know about others but a video or two about your restoration would be interesting.
Certainly would.
Dave, A book I think by John leather which I used to help me repair a mahogany clinker ex navy boat should assist your knowledge in this matter.
I really enjoyed his boat gear videos too
Came here to say the same thing
Roger, just want to say....your videos, for me at least, are just so compelling! I'm going thru' some rough times, facing eviction, unemployed, swimming upstream in London & well, to watch you in the rain, with your own obstacles, chores & that wonderful sense that it doesn't have to all be amazing, dazzling, glitzy, showiness like so many things I follow on youtube (& that youtube encourage me to follow!) but simply people talking quietly, in the gloom, going about their day-to-day,....can't describe it but there's a refreshing sense of modesty about it & the metaphor of the boat taking on water struck a chord with me. We're all sinking Roger, in our own special way but you're one of youtube's better creators.
Thank you Tom. I am touched!
Hiya Tom, Your comments struck a million cords as I've had similar circumstances for many years and it doesn't get better 😂 however real people like yourself and Mr Barnes bring the best out of nothing. A wee bit of advice, Forget London, pack what you can , cut your losses, pitch a tent up here in Scotland once you've spoken to the Farmer, get your head back from wherever it is and as I do think how awful it is for the Ukrainian and palastinian people you will soon realise how lucky we truly are. I could have bitten his hand off for that chunk of cheese n bread until my pension arrived. Good luck to everyone
Well said Tom mate. All the best navigating the rough season. Best is slways in front. Cheers John NZ
Very well said!
I just read “We’re all sinking in our own special way” and burst into tears of relief. Ok good. It’s not just me.
I would be very interested to see how the repair is executed. Thanks for a very interesting adventure on the water. John.
Might this just be the best YT video I have ever seen..? Pure poetry and yet another reminder of what sailing is all about.
Tnx a lot for this!
Wow, thank you!
Waterproof tape over the area will keep you sailing until you have time to fix it. I sailed a mirror dinghy for a week with a massive split in one of the bottom panels
Roger, you are an artist, a bright light in an often dark world, a treasure to humanity.
“Better drowned than duffers. If not duffers won’t drown”. How true for you. Well done and many thanks.
Philosophy according to mister R Barnes : “ Just be in the boat, drink beer and not get stressed” 😂😅
Barnes sounds like my kind of genius lol!
Your videos are a feast of sight and sound, Rodger. Peaceful in a troubled world. Thank you.
Gaffertape outside and go sailing. Winter is long enough to repair.
Thanks a lot for your inspiring movies.
So happy to be able see another episode. Your title reminds me of a Berlitz ad a few years ago. A rookie in the German Coast Guard receives a distress call from an American ship. "We are sinking!" "Ziss iss ze German Coast Guard. Vat are you sinking about?" Always a hit with my English language students here in Japan.
Or the BT advert where an Italian guy on the phone cries"Mama Mia" and his mum on the other end of the phone asks "whatsa wrong, son?" And the Italian guy says "Nothing's wrong, I'm just calling to say Hi mum, I'm ere...ere Ina London!" 😂
So good to see that you've had time on the water again. Hoping you get to do more of that over the coming months!
What beautiful mediations you share that end up bringing my senses into your pacing, like a wonderful piece of music, I just float along with your cadence.
So good to see the latest episode Roger - they are so enjoyable and informative and provide a real reminder of seeking the balance in life! Fair winds and tides Sir!
Really happy to see you sailing again, Roger. Hopefully we get to see some of the repair to the boat. I always look forward to your videos.
Friday and with my Rudder in bits, tired and slow progess all day.
Life has been busy here and got in the way of sailing.
Watching you drink beer on dull day, with no sun.
The leak is my salvation,as they say there is always somebody worse off than you.
Good luck with the repair.
Love the videos!
Thank you for summing up the beauty of sailing in this short video.
Always a treat when you post a video - thanks and hope you are back sailing soon.
Thank you Roger as always, for the realism and beauty of small boat sailing. It seems we are all sharing the same problems and weather! Maybe the jet stream will look favourably on us soon and deliver a time of good temperature, clear skies and fun breezes. I live in hope.
But at least the long wait for this video has shown we are all together.🌞
A delightful video, Roger. Well done!
Fantastic storytelling and great production values.
Highly enjoyable as always, Mr Barnes.
I just spent the last 25 minutes, or so, watching the most joyful video I have seen in a long while.
We have a deserter in our midst. A French ensign Mr Barnes! Rule Britannia marmalade & jam.😂. I would love to see a post of your history Roger. How you started out in life and how you became an architect and took to sailing. I really enjoy your videos, it would be nice to see the journey. 🙏
Congratulations on the most perfunctory cheese sandwich I’ve seen since my last one.
Glad to have you back Roger. We've bern reduced to watching Australian dinghy cruising and motor sailing for old dudes! Not the same thing at all 🤣 Please don't leave us so long next time!
Really enjoy all your videos Roger. If you have been super busy on the house then you will have lots to show us since the last update.😉👍⛵️
Having a beer and a nap in a sinking boat, Ha! I love it.
Cheers,
a
Philosophically going with the flow as usual! Good luck with the repair and hoping it doesn’t delay your cruising too much. It’s raining here in Cornwall too!
A perfect Breton wander. Just when I was wondering when the next video would make an appearance!! Merci from a fellow Briton in Breizh.
Saving this, with great effort, to enjoy with my Friday bottle of wine tomorrow. Thanks for not making the wait toooo long 😊
Fantastic director and producer of adventure and story naration. thank you.
Someone somewhere sometime said ,
There is nothing better than messing around in small boats.
🍻🇨🇦👨🏻🏭
That was Ratty in The Wind in the Willows! And he was right!
Thank you for the video Roger. Very inspiring and always gets me excited about getting out on the boat. Best wishes.
Good reminder that everything one owns is in a state of slow decay, as are we. That said, the sun always rises, every day a gift 😊 'the grass withers the flower fades but the word of G*d abides forever'. Peace. And thank you Roger for your artistry.
Glad to see you took time away from your other commitments for the important business of a stress relieving sail (although the stress on “sinking” may have dampened things). It is great to be able to live vicariously while we are in our Australian winter, although your summer did seem a bit elusive. I hope you get time for more outings in the near future.
Glad the leak is not at the centerboard trunk, much more annoying to repair, this leak should be pretty easy to sort!
When I was 9, my parents rented a small sailing boat in Wilmington, NC. It was like a tiny catamaran with a net on top that you sit in, and one of the sides started sinking more and more until the front took on water and the boat flipped. Pretty crazy and I refused to get on a boat for like 5 years after that lol. Thankfully we were in a busy area, so boats rushed to us
Great to see you back on the water. I have missed your videos. They bring calm to my evening after a hectic day in NHS hospital cardiology. Shame about the leak. Video about the repair, please.
Thank you so much Roger for sharing these adventures.
Honestly there are only two masters of this genre: Roger Barnes and Christian Williams. I have mixed feelings about technology but the ability to learn from them through these videos is stunning.
I absolutely love this video. I wish I could say the same for my wife who looks like John Major
Roger, it is always lovely to see you! Whatever you have been up to, you have a wonderful way of expressing yourself in this medium. Thank you. 🙏
“One bounces off so many rocks, it’s hard to say.”
Brilliant.
I particularly liked your comment about preparing and packing. I used to go camping alot in a van on a Friday after work and rushing about. My wife and I had various pack lists written down but we would always forget a knife, torch, toilet paper, lighter, tin opener pillow or something like this and get a bit fed up for a few minutes before realising there's always improvisation!
Wonderful footage and narration! Hope the fix goes well!
Great to see you back on the water! Thanks for sharing what you do - it is appreciated!
Another cracking adventure with Mr Barnes, well done rodger , your production values are really great as is your story telling. Great to see such enthusiasm for these small craft, I hope you can effect a repair and I'm sure you will more than likely carry that out yourself? Looking forward to that video if you do. Best regards from Portugal.
Another fabulous video, taking me back to the sailing grounds of my childhood, just beautiful!
Thank you Mr Barnes, the anticipation is building nicely for my little family sail this weekend
Amazing all the best
Great video Roger prepari g for harvest in typical Wimbeldon fortnight weather glad its not just here have a great seasson looking forward to more.
Thank you for the video. Soon I to will be joining the outdoor sailing and camping experience.
Roger, you probably don’t consider much about how fond, of you and your little Avel Dro, we have become as your YT fans…We have watched you for some time, now, listening to your commentary, picking up on your architecture, learning tips on sailing, packing and contents on your sweet boat…and all about the good sailing along the French coast. If we ache with concern for you and Avel Dro …well, we do. A leak, is another wonderful advantage of sailing a dinghy. Because you stay fairly close to the coast, if necessary, you can self rescue…Thank you for sharing this little piece of your life…from East Tennessee.
Great film Roger as usual! Sorry to see Avel Dro has a leak but that’s just a sign of being well used and you’ll get her mended. Slàinte Mhath!
Fab as always…❤
Great video , always a joy. Thank you…
Did well to find the leak so quickly.
We had a wooden boat making water at the transom for years. No one ever knew exactly where.
Hello Mr. Barnes, so great having you back on the water and on video. Thanx for sharing! I‘d be interested in seeing how the fix is done.
You are the one I like to watch about sailing Thank You
Nothing makes me hungry for lunch like a sinking boat. 😊
The inevitable long term result of beaching, drying out, etc. ( long term storage too) I suspect, This is a good thing, as it means Avel Dro is being put to good use & now requires some skilled repair, as one might expect throughout her lifetime. I hope the boat yard performs it's wizardry for you. Just re-reading your book last night too ! Thanks for posting.
It's a great book!
Nope, it’s putting the boat on rollers.
Lovely video Roger.
Great to see you posting again Roger. Really enjoyed this video. You look really exhausted from all the work on the house. Glad to see you out sailing again and I can empathise with your need to relax and be. Sorry about the leak but at least you've been able to identify where it is and it doesn't look too bad. Hope you record the repair surgery. We all need some sunshine not much around this year. Hang in there and stay well. FAIR winds to you.
“This is German coast-guard. What are you sinking about?“ :D
😂😂😂
Of course, here's the complete translation with the additional sentence:
"While I was tempted to, for the first time, express criticism about one of your videos, namely for clickbait, that would be unfair. Because this film is once again pure poetry, and it makes me want to repair my lugger dinghy immediately and set sail. You could also name your videos 'Shopping at IKEA,' and your community would still remain loyal to you."
Great video, as always. Regarding the mythical legend they call Summer, it appears that the Jet Stream is sitting extremely southerly and right over mid latitude France, and hence we have all this boring cloudy and rainy weather. With little sign of it actually changing soon.
Another lovely video roger. Thank you for taking us with you and do let us know how you get on with the repair.
I hope we get a detailed video of the repair by a traditional local craftsman. Scarfing in a couple of new planks would be a good watch. Might even get it done before the summer!! I hope the house is coming along well.
A router/chisel , glass and epoxy is your friend. Glad to see you now got a reliable anchor. Bon chance!
A wonderful video Roger. Thank you.
Also a baguette and cheese in an open boat - how French :)
Wooden boats don't leak, they just get thirsty. Good to see you back out on the water Roger.
Thanks Roger, I hope the fix won't put you out of action for too long, cheers Paul
great timing now i have something to watch before i leave for my 2 week sail in a few houres!!!!
Wonderful to see sailing video ❤
Merveilleux comme d'habitude. Bravo. From Adam.
Your videos are always good. But I have to say I think this is your best production one ever. Cut away shots and lots of extra detail, must have taken a long time to edit so thought I should say. Ty.
I hope you get your dinghy ship shape easily! Always great to get a video of your adventures! Loved the rowing boat that came to pick you up!!
Nice to see you and your boat again.
Lovely video and very inspiring for the next stage of our boatbuilding adventure. Thanks, Roger.
just found your site visually stunning - greetings from down under
Poor Avel Dro. Banged up but not broken.
Thank you Roger! Lovely video! So nice to see you again! Sorry to see Avel Dro had sprung a little leak. All the best to you! 😊
So good to see you back roger with lots of different sailing and rowing.hope the leak gets sorted how will that be repaired.best wishes robert
2:42 dingies in the rocks is super beautiful
Hi Roger, a beautifully crafted video both visually and musically with a simple story linking it all together. You’re a very talented film maker. Thank you.
In our norwegian clinker boats we're sinking a little all the time. No electric pump, we bail regularly. And we carry with us a couple half kg packets of margerine in case a larger leak opens up underway.
How weird.
Hi Roger, As an Ilur owner myself i’m hoping you will film your hull leak repair and share it with us on youtube.
Nice and tidy, boat and place!
Nicely put together, thank you.
Had a little sail this evening and half way through it died down, paddled back and normally I would be annoyed but I just slowly steadily made my way and soaked it all in.
Where is Summer you ask..? Well, it's here in Kentucky, on the Ohio River. So hot and humid as to make nights on the water unpleasant, so it was refreshing to see you bundled up...! As for the tinned beef, yes. Here on this side of the pond we have a 'Dinty Moore Beef Stew' which is the campers friend, both land and sea. I have been known to just put the tin right on the stove. The leak... oh yes. I once had a lapstrake boat, I share your pain. Was thinking while I watched, he's going to take a slice of that cheese and reach under and moosh it in the seam...
Such a peaceful and enjoyable video Roger. Thanks for the upload!
Better to be sinking than sunk.
so good as usual !! thanks
The one food I reserve exclusively for camping is bacon. The smell of cooking bacon in the open in the morning is just as good as the taste. I seek out from an independent butcher thick sliced with the rind on stuff that still tastes like bacon use to. The stuff British supermarkets sell is like sliced white bread. I eat very healthily except when camping when I indulge the child in me because it is convenient and fun but short lived. My gut biome takes a shock but recovers soon enough.
France isn’t a good place to buy bacon, sadly.
Slap some Flexseal on it and send it! 😎
Thank you for the video
glad to see you back on the water. One of my pleasures while small boat adventuring is, simple (man) food. Usually from a can that the label has come off years ago.Always a surprise. My last voyage ( not my final voyage) I ate a can of stew that that was Best before 1996. Don't worry a boat that sinking feeling just ads to the excitement of the adventure.
